Sanjiv | 429 comments What's the expected time delay between the announcement of book3's release, and the actual release? Given that time delay, how should one go about re-reading the previous two? Should it be one, epic marathon, or should the reading of the previous two be split over many months? Or would you rather not re-read the first two? Or perhaps you expect Doors of Stone to be your first step into the series? (hey, anything worth doing, is worth doing backwards, I say)

The reason I advocate reading all the books as one, is because 'Name of the Wind' had references that weren't apparent until 'WiseMan's Fear,' and I feel I only got them because I read both books back to back, and could quickly reference between the two. I.e. how Kvothe accused Chronicler of using his own best trick against him (holding his story hostage, as he had done with the Felurian).

Jeanette (followyourmuse) | 1 comments The delay will all depend, There were 4 years between 1 and 2 I will go on the assumption that it will be about the same for book 3, if it is less then it is a bonus.
The foreshadowing and connections between books I find the best way I explore it are some or all of the following,
I re-read each book in order in a marathon right before the next book comes out.

Some series I read all books, or at least the last couple each year in between sometimes in a marathon, sometimes not, if not I might take time and even take notes :)
Sometimes I re-read backwards, Like read WMF then NoTW.
I also find just reading individual story arcs, or Characters, Ie read all the Denna parts in order in all books, and skip anything not part of her story Arc. to be a great way to re-read.

TheThirdLie Luckily these books are so awesome I don't mind rereading them. Whenever book three comes out, I'll just read the first and second again before reading it. Much like I did this time.

message 4: by Gaard (new)

Gaard | 95 comments yeah i'm of the opinion that if you can read them both back to back before book 3 comes out then that way is best for me.

Phil the Arcane (philthearcane) | 43 comments I re-read but I also listen to the audio books (it's a long commute). I find that someone else reading it uncovers parts of the book/storyline/arc that I may not have given enough time to, thought important or may have just misinterpreted inflection, meter or cadence.

This of course "goes to pot" if I do not the person's voice who reading these audio books. Thankfully, the narrator is Nick Podehl for both books.

message 6: by Gaard (new)

Gaard | 95 comments It took me a long time to get used to Nick's voice on the NOTW, but now i don't think any other voice would be right, interesting choice for the Adem to have a dutch accent though, right? I thought of them as more Asian then dutch...but that's the narrators purgative.

Michael Hawk (mehawk) | 66 comments I have both books on the Kindle reader app, but I don't have kindle, just computers, itouch, and a phone that it works on. I bought NoTW in paper too, but unlike the people who love the feel of it, I don't any more. Paper is almost like the old chalkboard thing for me now.

However, I have come to love the audiobooks. I dont seem to get to take more than short breaks to read, but with the audiobooks I can plug in headphones and listen for days, driving, working, gardening...almost anything. I really can't recomend them more. If you love the series you really should try them.

I think Nick Podehl is amazing now even though I was very cold about it him the first time through NoTW. I can't even remember why, now that I have listend to both more than, well lets just say a lot, and I can pause to appreciate the performance without feeling disloyal to the story. His Kilvin voice and Elodin are great. Even his Denna makes me a little self conscious at times when I have to remind myself hes a guy, lol. (Listening to him doing Kvothe who is doing Trip from book one right now, so much better than my inner voice was.) There are times you almost feel like this is one of those books where they hired a team of actors rather then one.

Phil the Arcane (philthearcane) | 43 comments Michael wrote: "There are times you almost feel like this is one of those books where they hired a team of actors rather then one. .."

I would love to hear it performed like the old BBC LotR radio plays. I absolutely LOVE these and listen to them every one or two years.

I have bought the books (digitally and on paper) and the audiobooks and enjoy them all equally.

Phil the Arcane (philthearcane) | 43 comments Gaard wrote: "...interesting choice for the Adem to have a dutch accent though, right?"

To me it sounds like a Swedish or Norwegian accent. Something Scandinavian anyway.

Sanjiv | 429 comments As I browse the forums now and then, I keep on realizing how I'd much rather be reading the book. The chapters are great for stand alone reading, and everything seems different now that you know more. I.e. Elodin's craziness. So I'd totally be up for re-reading the books prior to launch. (haha, whaoh, didn't mean to criticize the forums. You guys are awesome)

But here's a question: While reading the third book, would you stop to check small things in its predecessors, or would you just read straight through it, even though you know you might be missing things on the first read through?

ps- saw the Adem as German or Dutch, but I didn't imagine them with much of an accent. Or if I did, I figured it would be more asian, sort of Mr. Miagi-esque. They didn't speak to loudly, after all, and I don't think of the Dutch as quiet.

Christie | 24 comments I think re-reading is great. I read NoTW and WMF back to back and would set aside a week to do it again prior to the release of book 3. I got a lot out of re-reading NoTW just prior to beginning WMF. I can't wait for book 3!

message 12: by Sanjiv (new)

Sanjiv | 429 comments ...You could do that in a week? Good god.

Unrelated, here's an idea I was mulling over: My suggestion for the group would be to start reading a chapter a day, since each chapter has a world of references that could be discussed and pondered over. Of course that'd take a lot of time and energy, and I doubt I'd be willing to do that in 3 or 4 years when we hear about the next book release.

Susan | 202 comments Sometimes I can't read at all for the day. I hate it, but it's true.

We could start doing a chapter a week now, starting with the prologue in WMF. New topic (maybe Chapter Discussions)Do a thread each week with the book and chapter title. What do you think, Sanjiv? We could move up the speed when we get wind (ha!) of a release date for Doors of Stone.

message 15: by Sanjiv (new)

Sanjiv | 429 comments I doubt there's the overall demand for it right now, but a chapter a week seems do-able. It'll also help us focus our discussion--Right now, it seems most on the forums are talking about the books without remembering the books. Even I'm getting to that point.

But a Re-read, Chapter Discussion does seem like great fun. But again, I wonder about the interested population.

Maybe it'll just be us and Kaye. ;-)

message 17: by Christie (new)

Christie | 24 comments I think a lot of people are finishing up school right now. Maybe delaying it would help.

@Sanjiv yes, I re-read NoTW and then WMF in 7 days back to back when WMF was released. I had to start WMF the day after I got it because I wasn't done with NoTW yet. It was great! The story flowed so well with the two books I initially found it difficult to separate them.

message 18: by Sanjiv (new)

Sanjiv | 429 comments I'm sure it took more that seven days. I did the same thing, reading them back to back, but that's because I just picked up the series on loose suggestions, and didn't know that the series wasn't completed yet. Ack! But that's not so bad. If I could have completed the series in one go, I'm not sure I'd have ended up here to reminisce and re-read stuff. I'm thankful.

The Summer semester just started at my University. When's a good time when people's schedules would be less hectic?

Never, I imagine.
Think we'll have to wing it and let people drop in and out as schedules permit.
Maybe June?

message 20: by Sanjiv (new)

Sanjiv | 429 comments true that. I just re-read a chapter yesterday, so I'm good to go whenever. Besides, if each chapter is it's own thread, then people can drop in whenever they feel like it.

Dangerous Romance Book Reviews (dangerousromance) | 14 comments I would love to be in on this. Count me in! Because yes, it is crazy tryingto remember every detail weeks, months, even years later.
I think you should just start it and anyone can start up and drop in if they were able to read that chapter. Any idea how to logistically do it? Cause that would be a lot of threads.

message 22: by Christie (new)

Christie | 24 comments I'm not sure how different groups on goodreads interact. But I noticed that a group called "Beyond Reality" has a thread for discussion of WMF up to chapter 10. Just thought I'd mention it.

Hmmm. I think we'll still do our own. This is where all the cool kids are. ;)

message 24: by Christie (new)

Christie | 24 comments I was just looking at the set up for discussions. I agree doing it here has a lot of pros.

Dangerous Romance Book Reviews (dangerousromance) | 14 comments We could start a yahoo group. Just an idea. But if Good reads doesn't mind us having a crazy amount of threads going on two books, I think its fine. I'm super excited to start all over, together! I've only re-read up to chapter 4 on NOTW and I can start again.
How cool would it be if Patrick stopped in once in awhile? (:

message 26: by Allen (new)

Allen Tsai | 71 comments Whooooa, I love book clubs! I think Mary said something about WMF, but can we start w/ NotW? Discussion thread per chapter? This is exciting! A chapter a week might be a bit slow though... I tend to enjoy my books in single sittings, albeit 10 hour long sittings.
