Reminds me of an unfortunate conversation I had with a couple of authors at the convention I just went to. I won't be able to look at my werewolf/unicorn love story in quite the same way EVER again...

Well, the confusion arose due to me telling my audience that the couple was a male werewolf and a female unicorn before telling them that both individuals can shapeshift into human form. There were some very illustrative charades. I blushed mightily.

New to publishing? New to Goodreads? New to the net? All of the above? :)

I'm always late to the party (working a crazy day job and writing 3 books and starting a net life myself0 so here's my belated Welcome aboard! and as others have already said, you really could not have chosen a better group than this to join here on Goodreads. Don't make it your only one but this will be the best ;-)

They have a great system set up for authors to get reviews (genuine reviews, not for pay or other sleazy methods of stacking the deck) and for reviewers to find authors to donate books for them to read (also free).

As Jenn the Longhair (one of our lovely moderators) wrote, you might want to go create yourself a folder and in the discussion for Authors seeking Reviews but it's also worthwhile to go through the discussion for Reviewers Seeking to Read folder and contact specific reviewers, too. Be sure to create your folder in the Authors discussion, though, because next month or 6 mos from now, new reviewers (or just plain old readers) will look there for books to read.

If you're totally new and have no readers at all and would like to get some--since your book's already being offered free with a code--consider submitting your book to my Webbiegrrl's Writings Freebie Friday blog. I'm still starting out so it's not like a thousand readers will see your book every hour but I will get about 150 people coming by and out of those, usually, between 20 and 50 download each of the 3 books offered each week.

This week, I kind of let the authors down. I was exhausted and just needed a day off tweeting so didn't give them the shoutouts every 90 min like I usually do for each of the authors (I schedule the tweets but still gotta write 'em all) so I only got about 39 visitors to the blog. Not sure how the authors fared, haven't had the courage to ask them. :) Usually I don't blow off my promo responsibilities and I do get each of the authors several new readers and at least one or two new reviews. At least according to my followups.

I see it as a win/win/win: readers get free books, authors get free advertising and I get free content/traffic for my blog. I think the readers get the best deal of all ;-) I've got one entry already for the next feature, Oct. 21st, but there are 2 spots left, first come, first serve.

It's pretty easy, like ONE freakin step but the instructions get longer and longer as one after another author finds new and bizarre "exceptions" to the otherwise very straightforward rules. I won't be doing this forever, b/c obviously I'm losing my altruistic motives *grin* For now, though, it's a great way for me to help other authors get new readers.
