A Game of Thrones
I agree with that, Denae. That was an important scene in the book, I thought, because it shows the beginning of Dani's understanding Drogo and perhaps even loving him.
Denae wrote: "I am generally very happy, with the exception of how they changed the Dani/Drogo sex scene. I much preferred the book where [spoilers removed] to the show where [spoilers removed]Also, how much a..."
I was thinking the same thing when I watched it last night. I think that was the only scene that bothered me. The viewer doesn't understand that this is the beginning of their relationship.
I thought the casting of Catelyn was wrong as well at first, but after some thought I think she makes sense for a woman who came is the mistress of Winterfell. I think she needs to be a bit hardened. She certainly isn't how I pictured her in my head, but I actually think she works quite well.Wanted to add that I just loved the opening credit sequence. LOL. It just looked so cool
I can see why all of the adults look older than they are in the books as well... It's a hard world, and a 35 year old probably would look 55 in such a place. I doubt they are living to 80+, so it makes sense to me.
I agree about the Drago scene. But Dawn raises a good point. Altho I do hope that they don't make it seem like Dani changed him.Not only was the Wall great, but I loved King's Landing! Just the way I imagined it, and how often does that happen in movies/shows from books?
And I can't remember, who is Theon? It's been so many years. I've really forgotten every book, I just dimly remember people wandering around the woods, ha! In some ways I wish all the books were done filming and airing before Dances with Dragons FINALLY is released, nice memory boosters.
i agree about the comments above re. drogo & dani...but i also agree with what may turn out to be the producer's rationale, if that's what happens.i loved that ice wall. and the credits were awesome!
theon is one of my favorite characters. he is a rather hilarious creation. i love seeing him fail! he is also surprisingly complicated, and far from a one-note villain, so i really enjoyed the chapters from his perspective.
@Grant: I remember - it's just easier to read about it than having it "in your face". (view spoiler)I too loved the ice wall, the scope of it was enormous which of course it should be.
@Lina - your boyfriend is going to be really surprised when (view spoiler)!
Lol...I suspect quite a bit will be shown, Cheryl, considering the station that undertook the project. Gratuitious well...everything is well within their field of expertise.
Re: Drogo and Dani. Although I didn't like that scene because of the changes, I will go with everyone who said that they will trust the writers and producers. I can also see why they'd do this. Or, at least, I think I can see where they're attempting to go with that story line.
Mark, I'd agree with you on the credits as well. I think they are one of HBO's best. But, they usually have some pretty cool opening credits.
I liked how the actors had little House Sigils next to their name during the opening credit/map sequence. That was a nice touch.
Loved it. Watched it twice. And I'm sure I'll watch it again before the next episode. It was everything I hope it would be. Getting here so late, everything I wanted to say has already been said.
I like how the adults looked harsh, it's a harsh world. I liked the opening credits. The Wall was more impressive than the one in my head. The only thing I didn't like was Dani's wedding night and I don't care why it was changed.
I kept looking at Tyrion's eyes, and I can't tell if they're mismatched or not. The shots were never close-up enough for me to see.
Overall, I think the casting was well done, except for Robb and Catelyn, I think they could have found actors more fitting. Bran and Arya were perfect.
Can hardly wait til the next ep.
Just remembered another thing I was suprised at... Pronouncing maester as "my-ster"? What the hell? I've always though it as "may-ster". Another one that got me was "sigul". I feel like such a bad fantasy fan. I always thought it with a "g" sound like "seagull", but they said it with a "g" like... I can't even think of anything it was like, it was more of a "j" sound like "jiggly".
Mark wrote: how would you have changed Robb? He looks too old, he's already a man. I know about increasing the ages, but going from 15 to 25-looking doesn't work for me. Jon looks about 18-ish, so Robb should too.
And I'd change the actor for Sansa too. She's not beautiful, she's slightly better than plain. And dye the ugly red hair.

I think they should change the actor for Arya, she is not tomboy enough for me in her act, and don't get me started on her looks.
The girl they chose to play Arya definitely doesn't have the "horse face" that's so often desribed in the books. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing tho
George R R Martin did an interview with Empire, a movie magazine, here is the link http://www.empireonline.com/interview...
Kevin wrote: I think they should change the actor for Arya, she is not tomboy enough for me in her act and don't get me started on her looks. I don't think we've seen enough of her to determine if she's tomboy enough. And a tomboy can still be cute too.
Grant wrote: Arya definitely doesn't have the "horse face"...
That doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would.
Can you imagine the poor kid who could've gotten cast as Arya?
"Oh wow, you're face is just perfectly horsish! It's almost hideous to look at! You've got the job!"
That'd just be mean.
Also, the kid they did pick for Arya hasn't had a chance to really shine yet. She might actually be great in the role.

I like the girl who plays Arya, so far. She's not horsefaced as she's described in the book, sure. But televsion always replaces such things with beauty. Just look at Tyrion. I think Grant said this earlier, and I agree, that Peter Dinklage is too good looking to play the part. On the other hand, no one else could play that part. We'll have to wait to see just how tomboyish the arya girl is in further episodes, I think.
The girl playing arya seems to be able to act. Now I know she only said about 5 total words in the the first episode, but she just seemed to capture Arya's spirit to me, and she is such an essential character in the book i think that is so important.I actually thought she was one of the better cast people even though she doesn not have the "horse face"
I was pretty happy with the first episode, but i think if someone had not known the books the pacing of it is a little off and it is hard to follow as a new comer. I hope they can keep interest in it. Thankfully it was picked up for a second season so we get at least two seasons
Dave wrote: "The girl playing arya seems to be able to act. Ditto! She really captured the spunk even without doing much. For me, acting for these characters is more important. And let's face it, Hollywood isn't exactly filled with normal looking people.
I remember when I first read the books, I pictured a young Tori Spelling as Arya. Total horse face.
So, I thought last night's episode did a good job of advancing the plot and fleshing out the characters a little. I enjoyed it much more than the premiere episode. The only other thing I can say is that I had to go hug my dog for a really long time after the show was over :(
I thought it did well for character development but not much on plot development.Favorite scene: Tyrion slapping the shit out of Joffrey. That kid needs a lot more of where that came from.
You are my hero, Ala! Thanks for posting this, love it, I'll be sitting here a while, lolThe more I watch it, the funnier it gets.
i'll have to admit to being annoyed at all the caetelyn-looks-too-old comments i've been reading in GR...but then during last night's episode, when she first appeared (in profile over Bran's bed), i thought to myself 'It's Old Nan!'. then quickly realized my mistake. LOL. i guess folks may have a point after all. i tried looking up the actress' age on imdb to compare it with sean bean's, but it is not listed. another website lists her as around 45, which actually makes her younger than sean bean.my favorite scene was also tyrion slapping the shit out of joffrey. and tyrion at the breakfast table with cersei and jaime.
My husband and I thought it was a bit slow the first half. I don't mind that, but I began to be worried that viewing would drastically fall off. I thought it did a great job showing how obsessedly single-minded Cat is. I also hated her for how she treats Jon.And like the books, they are making Tyrion into a favorite character, but I think they are also ignoring the ill effects he does have on others. Or am I mistaken? I thought it took awhile for us to see just how terrific he is.
I'm now OK with how they changed Dani's sex scenes.
And Cersei is successfully coming across as an evil bitch! I hated her.
I loved Tyrion right away. I definitely hate the way Catelyn treats Jon. It pisses me off that no one sees the treasure he is. Oh Cersei, you lovely bitch. Lena Headley is perfection in this role, she's got her down pat, facial expressions, body language, everything.
i like how when she tries to smile graciously, only one side of her mouth moves up, so it ends up looking like a painful sneer. some nice acting there.
mark - I don't remember, that's why I was asking! lol I just seem to recall that my first reactions to him were mixed, but it's been a long long time, so it seems I'm wrong. Won't be the first time, and definitely won't be the last time, dammit!
ah!well, i haven't seen any ill effects from tyrion in the first two books, other than on people who have crossed him. if anything, he is a (cynical) force for good, in his own way.
i think the mixed reaction that folks get towards tyrion in the beginning is an automatic one: he is a Lannister, and they are responsible for some mighty evil acts. it is hard to see him as heroic when he is working for such an evil family.
Aha, I think you nailed it, yes, he is a Lannister so I was suspicious. He did prove himself to me in the first book, but he does admit he supports his family so it's natural to have misgivings at first. Thank you!

Also, how much age difference is there supposed to be between Catelyn & Cersei?
