Neko Was brought up in another thread here..
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...

Who else finds it hard to let go of books once they are read?

I'm like this, I've books I know I'll probably never read again, yet, I can't let go of them. But I've gotta do it otherwise I'll run out of room especially since joining GR my book collection has JUMPED..lol

Just wish it wasn't so hard to sell/give away books that are no longer needed >_<;;;

Matthew Lang (matthewlang) | 143 comments Terribly. Even books I don't like I find it hard to get rid of. Sometimes I can lend them to people and forget to ever get them back, but it's painful giving books to second hand stores and such.

I agree...I used to keep them all, loved or not. But now it's a matter of space...after the amount of years I have been buying books..lol

So I'm doing it a bit at a time, and I can actually get a credit from my local second hand book shop, so I can get some more for my money...haha! But it's so difficult, especially the ones I think 'oh, I'll probably never read it again, but...' :)

Ah, but Jessica, you are only 15!!! Wait till you reach my age..if you continue buying books at the rate you are buying them, when you reach middle age you'll have nowhere to put them all...you'll need to marry a very rich man, who buys you your own library...;) LOL

message 6: by Neko (new)

Neko LOL! Yes, I agree with Brenda on this on Jessica.

I once sold the majority of my comic collection just for some 'pocket money'...I've since collected every comic back! But gosh that was a mistake but I was young and silly.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I dont know.....I've been having to let go of stuff since I was young (we moved alot). But I still find myself getting sad over the books I've parted w/ voluntarily or not. :(

message 8: by Maggie (new)

Maggie I also used to hang on to every book, but now I find it much easier to part with them. With less room on the shelves it became a necessity.

Every so often I would have a huge cull, but now after reading each book I decide "Will I ever read it again, or lend it to someone?" If no, then it's off to my book exchange where I get credit towards other books. I keep my favourites, and plan to re-read them. Some I do, some I may not.

I also seem to have developed a skill for stashing books in places other than my bookshelves. So really I own many more books than it may seem!

Carmel, you can't get rid of those!!!! You have to keep them for Sheldon & Bianca's babies...your grandkids!!!! I have plastic tubs of books in the garage, and Jarrah is LOVING his Dad's old books. I also have some from when I was small!!!! lol

message 11: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The only books I'm happy to let go of are the bad ones. Anyone want a copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover? :P

I'm running out of bookshelf room and I might need to get some more bookshelves but I'm running out a space. I need a library room. That would be sweet.

Neko hahaha...yes! :(

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) how many of them are hanging on the wall? I want all the guild comics on my wall, since I order both covers of each comic :)

message 24: by Neko (new)

Neko Eeek, sunlight on comics :( I've nothing on my walls. If i was going to hang comics up on the wall, it'd have to be photocopies..ehhehehe.

Have you bought the Vork or Tink off spins?

message 25: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) No sunlight getting to those comics, I've got Vork, no Tink yet :(

message 26: by Neko (new)

Neko Vork was good :D! Considering Tink was only released a week or 2 ago..I guess it'll turn up in Australia soon :) I'll just purchase it online soonish.

message 28: by Cheryl (last edited Mar 30, 2011 02:18PM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm used to moving, so I don't have *too* much trouble letting go of books. I love libraries, so anything I'm confident is likely to stay in their collections is especially easy to let go of. I do have about one banker's box of books that are hard-to-find and worth a re-read.

I register my books at bookcrossing.com and then they have tracking numbers. Then I release them so other people can pick them up and enjoy them. Sometimes those people even go online and use that BCID tracking number to let me know they've found the book.

The most trouble I had letting go of books was when I realized my 14-son was never going to get around to reading all the juveniles I had set aside for him. For example I had a copy of almost everything by Katherine Paterson, who is really interesting and is popular among teachers, and one of my favorites... and my son didn't read *any* of them. Argh.

You'd have to be really lucky, Jessica. And I think Brenda's point was that you'll need a library, not a library room.

I used to have a lot of trouble. I carried my uni text books around the world with me, but had to leave them in Belgium when I realised that I hadn't opened even one in ten years. Now I don't have to worry about giving up my ebooks, but I have to struggle with the idea of giving up my paperbacks so that I can buy ebook versions to take with me when I travel again.

And uni text books are very heavy..:( It sure is hard to give up the paperbacks, but they are certainly a lot heavier to carry than ebooks!! lol

One of my goals for this year is to go through them and make a choice to keep and throw..waah x(

Neko will do! not looking forward to it either ><;;;

Oh and i forgot to say to Carmel, NOOOOO don't throw away the books your children loved..They can come in handy if you girls decide to have children of their own sometime in life. I'd move those books to some place in the house where you can sorta forget about them.

My Mum still owns the books I loved as a child/baby. Some she even uses with her class..haha.

At least you arrived home safely Carmel, that's the main thing :)

Also glad you're going to keep the kid's books, oh you would sooo regret it when the grandkids are old enough to be at your house, and you don't have a lovely 'old' book to read them...lol

message 47: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (nikkehsky) I find it incredibly difficult to get rid of books, but have been considering doing the Bookcrossing thing to get rid of some of them, as both my husband and I are bibliophiles. I'm sure you can imagine the piles of books.

My father-in-law made us a lovely bookshelf a few months back, and we filled it right up, with books to spare! That's probably not a good sign. It's just a matter of getting off of my backside to do it. That and, you know, overcoming the psychological barriers between me and getting rid of them.

message 48: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) The most difficult ones for me are the complete series. I find so many loose series' titles in secondhand stores and it's frustrating. Once I've done the work of collecting all the books that go together, I'd like some assurance they'll stay together. I have a complete set of the Animorphs, all 60 or so books, and nobody special to give them to. Katherine Applegate

message 49: by Jan (last edited Apr 03, 2011 11:05PM) (new)

Jan (auntyjan) I have no trouble at all collecting books, that's the easy part. Birthdays, Christmas, give me a book or three and I'm happy. Then there are all those sale tables, some of them not even in bookshops, but out in the middle of the shopping centre, so many irresistible bargains. Then sometimes you might happen upon a school fete, and if it's near closing time they might decide you can fill a plastic bag with books for a dollar. Now I haven't read all these books, but I own them. And cherish them. Not for me those dog-eared, scribbled pages. When I finish a book (yes, I have read at least half of them) you could scarcely tell it had been opened. You see, the lost books of the world need someone who'll appreciate them and take care of them. They are my valuables. But my bookshelves are overflowing. If you remove a row of books, you'll find another row behind.....and in some bookcases you'll find a third row of books in behind that! I have more than a hundred recipe books. I don't have a freezer next to my fridge, I have a bookcase. There's even a shelf of recipe books in my pantry. My university textbooks occupy a linen press, there's a stack of books without a shelf by my bed, and more in the family room. There are eleven bookcases throughout the house overcrammed and overloaded with books. And now piles of them are mounting up in various corners of various rooms. So I had a good idea. I thought I would join one of those online places where you can list all your books. I joined Goodreads. And started listing them. The idea being that the list would suffice. I could keep the list, and discard some of the books. Sounded like a plan. Then I noticed some groups. I joined a few and soon rediscovered my love of novels. I started buying a few classics to keep up with the reading in some of my groups. Soon I was browsing the bookshops again... And I keep buying more. My name is Jan. And I'm a bookaholic.Somewhere around here I even have six books on decluttering!

Oh my Jan...that is amazing! Eleven bookshelves!! You need a bigger house, or just purchase yourself a library!! I'm the same with my books, and I have taught my kids the same way too...look after them, they are treasures! Mine look like they haven't been read either, but that's the way I love them. I lent one out, a long time ago, and it came back tattered and torn. I was devastated. I vowed to never lend my books again!!!! :) (I have but not often, and only to people I trust!)
