Huzzah, indeed! Congrats. Went to the Suspense website and the home page announced the winners but unfortunately, I found no link to the inside.

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Oh gosh. I've finally figured out how to set up my Author page here on Goodreads. I was stunned to discover that several folks have marked my first book as a "to read". I also got a nice rating from a reader (whom I don't know). It's a self-backslap on my part but it is a real thrill so I hope you'all will forgive me for a bit of crowing. Thanks very much to those who are giving BLACK KNIGHTS OF THE HUDSON a chance. There are so many wonderful writers out there that it means a great deal to me to have you spend a bit of time with my Army folks.

Sterling Gate Books (sterlinggatebooks) | 3 comments The Amazon Kindle edition of our historical adventure-romance Fiji is FREE until Monday March 12 PST.

It is currently ranked Top 20 in Amazon's Historical Books category.

Set in 19th Century Fiji, it is “a spellbinding novel of adventure, cultural misunderstandings, religious conflict and sexual tension set in one of the most exotic and isolated places on earth”.

In the mid-1800's, Fiji was a melting pot of cannibals, warring native tribes, sailors, traders, prostitutes, escaped convicts and all manner of foreign undesirables. It's in this hostile environment in our story that an innocent young Englishwoman and a worldly American adventurer find themselves. Despite their differences, there’s an undeniable chemistry between them. When their lives are suddenly endangered by marauding cannibals, they are forced to rely on each other for their very survival.

message 72: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth | 16 comments Hi everyone - I'm doing a Goodreads giveaway of my book, The Ranch Next Door and Other Stories, which is newly released in paperback! Here is the book description:

A collection of Western short stories that go beyond the standard action and adventure of the genre to focus on character and conflict. In the award-winning “Disturbing the Peace,” honorable mention in the 2010 Rope and Wire short story competition, a sheriff experiences a revelation about himself and his relationship with the people of his town, while in “The Outlaw’s Wife,” a country doctor worries that his young friend is falling for a married woman whose husband is rumored to be a wanted criminal. From the suspenseful “Cross My Heart” to the comedic romp of “A Rangeland Renaissance,” to a Western twist on star-crossed romance in the title story, “The Ranch Next Door,” these stories will appeal to a variety of readers, as well as established fans of the traditional Western.

"Wonderfully told short stories that will hold your attention until the last word...Foley injects a breath of fresh air into the Western genre." - Matthew Pizzolato, The Western Online

"[Disturbing the Peace] is an extremely well-written, engrossing character study of the main protagonist...It starts out almost as a standard western short story...but quickly becomes much more than that." ~ James J. Griffin, Western Author & Storyteller

There's two copies available, and the giveaway will run through April 20th - details here: http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sho...

Ken McAlpine | 9 comments Hello Historical Fiction Readers (and Jenny):

Thanks so very much for your time.
I have never been technologically adept, but I am trying to enter this new social media world. I am a long-time writer who is turning from traditional publishing (I have several books on Goodreads) to self-publishing. I suspect I should keep it short, but I want to be honest too. I’m not particularly keen on selling myself, but now that I’m on my own it’s much harder to avoid, and so that is exactly what I am doing. I found your group, and after studying it I thought it looked right. My new novel “Fog” (to be published this June by iUniverse) takes place in 1882 along the winter shores of Cape Cod. If you are interested, there’s a brief synopsis below. If you aren’t interested, I sincerely apologize for perhaps being in the wrong place. Most important, thank you all for being readers…
Best, Ken McAlpine

“Fog”
Welcome to the winter shores of 1882 Cape Cod, a world of shipwreck and quick death, and a race to find a treasure that will change history and the course of a young America coming into its own. When a ship sinks in a storm, its secret dying on the lips of a child, a catastrophic chain of events is set in motion. Courage and cowardice, greed and selflessness, righteousness and sin blur and intertwine as Keeper Daniel Cole and his fellow lifesavers pursue a philosophical killer whose curious moral compass metes out agonizing death and calls into question the very foundations of what we call progress and civilization. Ken McAlpine | 9 comments Hi Jenny:

You're so sweet to reply so quickly and so warmly. I have to confess, I was pretty nervous about posting. But I guess my fear was trumped by my need to get the word out :) Please let me know if there is anything else you need from me (although I guess the way this works, is I sit back and wait to hear). I am thinking, as the publication date draws near, about giving out some free copies to a few of your kind readers who might be interested.
Thanks again for the warm response. You have no idea how good that felt.
Best, Ken

Ken McAlpine | 9 comments Hi Jenny: Given my skills, it might take me a few weeks of diving (and hitting the bottom), but thanks for the tips! I know I can write about the 19th century, but I need to enter this one...

message 82: by Beverly (new)

Beverly Gray (grayarmybrat) | 78 comments Don't worry, Ken. I haven't even attempted tweeting yet. I've drifted into the early 20th century (around 1917) so, hopefully, I'll get myself up to the 21st here in a little bit.

Thanks for the recommendation, Jenny. I'll look into it, too.

Susan Spence | 22 comments Kristin and Ken, Thanks so much for your interest. Having people read a free copy of A Story of the West is as rewarding to me as having a bought copy sit on a shelf or ereader unread. And you better get a promo copy while you can because once it gets popular, people will pay big time (har har).

I will send you both a message with the coupon code.

Elisabeth | 16 comments War Memorial A Short Story by Elisabeth Grace Foley

I've just released a new historical fiction short—a Civil War story, War Memorial. Earlier today it cracked the top 100 in Amazon's Hot New Releases in Historical Fiction, and it's still at #24 in Short Stories! Here is the synopsis:

At the bottom of an old trinket-box lies a misshapen bit of lead—a bullet from the Civil War, an old family keepsake preserved, but mostly forgotten, by later generations. And behind it lies a story—the story of a young girl’s experiences in the days surrounding the fateful battle of Gettysburg, which force her to examine her own heart and show her the face of war in a way she could not have understood before.

“War Memorial” is a short story, approximately 6,500 words long.
