Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I have just recently discovered the Metadata feature here at Goodreads. I'm slowly figuring out how it works.

The Metadata section features literary questions and answers about specific books. Some examples:
What is the tone of a particular book?
What is the genre?
What is the writing style?

The Metadata section makes you think about books and how they are written. It's like a literature course all by itself.

For those who don't know, you can encounter the Metadata while you are composing or editing your book reviews. When you are in the edit mode, you will see (under the "Private Notes" section, at the right) "edit book metadata". Click on that. That will lead you to metadata questions and a link which says "view all metadata".

In some cases, instead of the "edit book metadata" you will see questions underneath the "Private Notes" section. Next to the questions, it says in parenthesis, "What is this?". If you click on that, you will find Metadata questions and also the link which says "view all metadata".

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I posted a question about the "metadata" feature at the GR Feedback group.
Below is my question and the answer I received:

My Question: "Does the GR Help section explain the "METADATA" feature?"

Answer: "I believe they consider that feature in beta. When they get it to a formal release state, they'll probably add documentation."

My Reply: "I see. Thank you. It's a great feature! It's almost like a mini-literature course, helping the reader to think about the many aspects of writing and reading. I like seeing other people's answers to the specific questions."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The term "metadata" is new to me. So I went to Wiki to learn more about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata
Excerpt:
"The term was coined in 1968 by Philip Bagley, one of the pioneers of computerized document retrieval. Since then the fields of information management, information science, information technology, librarianship and GIS have widely adopted the term. In these fields the word metadata is defined as "data about data". While this is the generally accepted definition, various disciplines have adopted their own more specific explanation and uses of the term."
