I'm puzzled... Help needed with finding movie title & actor

Reading 2666 by Roberto Bolaño I came along a book/film link that made me curious. A quick search in Google & IMDb didn't help, so maybe you can? I'm wondering whether Bolaño made it up but I'm thinking it's too detailed not to be true.. Don't worry, this is just a small sideline and contains no spoilers about 2666.

p.505 "The Chicano he was talking to told him the story of an L.A. serial killer who killed only homosexuals. [..] Are they going to make a movie about him? asked Reinaldo. They already have, said the Chicano at the other end of the line. [..] And who was in the movie? Keanu Reeves, said the Chicano. Keanu as the killer? No, as the police man who catches him. So who played the killer? That blond guy, what's his name? said the Chicano, he has the same name as a character from a Salinger novel. Ay, there's an author I haven't read, said Reinaldo. You haven't read Salinger? asked the Chicano. That, my friend, is a giant gap in your education"

The talk takes place in 1995 so it would be logical to conclude the movie has been made no later than early '95.

Fictional film, Bolano made it up. He might have been thinking of CRUISING, the famed disaster starring Al Pacino.

I gotta an inside story about CRUISING. A friend of mine in Boston was hitting the bars one night and who should sit next to him but a deadringer for Pacino. The deadringer is reading this movie script and my friend turns to him and asks, so you`re Al Pacino? The actor shakes his head no. Actually, I confess, I`m Al`s younger brother. Nobody knows me. Al got me this part in this new movie. This is the script.
