Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption Laura Hillenbrand Laura Hillenbrand

Rating: Five Stars!!
Genre: Biography
This is a wonderful book.

The author does a great job, as she did with Seabiscuit that was another book I gave five stars of Goodreads to.
This biographical non-fiction reads, at times, like a thriller. Ken Follett or Jack Higgins or Tom Clancy could easily subcontract to her writing the action parts of their books.

This is gut wrenching and sad book. It is worthy reading and the characters are all memorable, and well developed enough to “connect” with almost every one of them.

The trials, sacrifice and suffering of our airmen and soldiers, and those of our allies including the postwar time (thinking of our soldiers now serving and returning from Iraq and Afghanistan) are inspiring and somber.
The book also made me think again of the cruelty of the Japanese in this war making me think back to The Rape of Nanking

The Rape of Nanking The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II by Iris Chang The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II Iris Chang Iris Chang

about the occupation of that city by the Japanese.

I can see such a difference between what I read as the Japanese war attitude in this book, in the explanation of post war Japanese education in Japan (selective selection of presentation of WW II history) what I have seen of Japanese attitudes in Japanese businessmen I have dealt with thru my career and their attitude of self righteousness compared to the Germans of WW II who to my knowledge to this day are not proud of their WW II. Similar to other countries they are and can be proud of individual actions and courage but never as proudly or defiantly as the Japanese.

So I leave this book with awe of Zamperini (the subject) and admiration for Laura Hillenbrand’s analytical and writing abilities and new food for thought on that War and morality and individual responsibility.

Just a couple of pointers: first of all let me say way better!!!!

As long as there is a book cover; you do not also have to put in the title in text; but if you want to add it as extra - that is OK. You have the author's photos which is good and the author's name in linkable text. And you have entered the month - very good.

However, you may have to go in to edit your text. You only forgot the Finish Date line.

Finish Date: January 2011 or if you want to be more specific; you can put in month, day and year but it really is not necessary, month and year is good enough.

Great insight and review Vince. You have come a long way with the goodreads software and are making progress.
