Lisarenee | 7659 comments Have you ever read a book and loved just about everything about it but a certain character's name or nickname? Are there any character name you think are over used? Well, dish. What are some of the names you just couldn't stand, found very distracting, or are overused in a book or books and hope to never see in a book again?

I'm reading Aftertime and one of the main characters has a nickname of Smoke. I'm not sure I like it. Another book (and I loved the book) had a character name Whizmo. It distracted me to no end. I guess I couldn't relate the name to the character. Seemed like a name for an adolescent not an adult character.

message 2: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I have to think about this one but I think the Fantasy genre in general is filled with characters with horrible names that I can barely pronounce.

message 3: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) It bothers me when you read a book and all the characters but a few have weird names. Like in Across the Universe, they had a name like Elder, Harley and Orion yet the main characters name was Amy. Its like name them all something normal or keep them all kinda strange.

message 4: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I still have yet to read that book, but it's on my to read list.

message 5: by Sashana (new)

Sashana It's not that I don't like the name of the characters in Inside Out (Inside Out, #1) by Maria V. Snyder but I think they are extremely odd. Broken Man, Cog, and Trella. Weirdness.

message 6: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Lora Leigh has horrible names. Lawe Justice, Anger, they're all pretty awful.

message 7: by Sans (new)

Sans Don't forget Leigh's Dawg (aka Rowdy, equally bad in my opinion) and Natches from her Nauti series. WTF??

message 8: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 248 comments Bananach from Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series.
and Mencheres from Eternal Kiss from Darkness.

I don't know how to pronounce either one.

Hopefully, she gets a kick out of these awful names and is not serious about them.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I LOVE The Outsiders. Great book. You should suggest to your teacher that you all read it from the audiobook also. Hearing the voices and the cadence of the words brings a whole different feel to the book. :)

The names can get confusing. Stick it out. It gets better!

message 11: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I'm currently reading Mastiff and one of the character's (who is supposed to be this bad ass) name is Achoo... I'm sorry, how am I supposed to take you seriously with a name like that? I can hardly keep a straight face whenever she is mentioned.
Mastiff (Beka Cooper, #3) by Tamora Pierce

message 12: by Marissa (new)

Marissa | 72 comments The Hush,Hush series has a character who's supposed to be all tough, but I can't take it seriously when his name is Patch.

message 13: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments Sashana - the name Achoo sounds like a sneeze. That might be the oddest one that I've heard yet. lol

message 14: by Lisarenee (last edited Nov 07, 2011 08:33PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments I mean to get Mastiff. Achoo, that is a name.

Maybe we should start a section that lets authors test drive character, series, and book title names. Do you think any would take us up and see what we think?

That's what I thought too. The whole series in general has characters with weird names. But I enjoy it because it's well written.

We could do a test run in our author folder.

Sashana From Anna Dressed in Blood: Morfran and Theseus.

yojharobed || I have no sword. I don't need a sword. Because I am the Doctor and this is my spoon. En garde! (yojharobed) How To Train Your Dragon: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock. The THIRD!!

Not that I don't like it, I just think that it is hilarious. Ditto with all the other names in the book/movie!

message 19: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments lol That is some name.

message 20: by Aoibhínn (last edited Jun 30, 2012 08:52AM) (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I don't mind the odd strange name or two. What I really hate is when the character's names don't match the time period where the book is set. I don't like it when the book is set in 1850 and the main characters all have ultra-modern names like Jaden, Cale, Jaycee, Raelyn and Chantelle, etc.

message 21: by Alli (new)

Alli The Book Giraffe (allithebookgiraffe) probably Ever from the book Evermore. Or maybe even Clary from The mortal instruments.

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments I have a few pet peeves about character names.

First, names that sound more like nicknames given by your drunk buddies. Example, Brood and Pollo and Hondo in Seed by Rob Ziegler

Second, names that are just made up. Unless you're writing a fantasy novel set in a different universe, don't just squish a bunch of letters together and call it a name.

Last, names better suited for children given to adults. For example, a grown adult character shouldn't be name Tommy, Billy, Jimmy, Ricky, Maggie, etc. If it's their nickname with friends then ok, but not as a given name please.

I agree about the made up names. Unless it is a fantasy or Sci-fi book, please don't make up crazy names that sound ridiculous.

message 24: by Deyara (new)

Deyara | 113 comments Meaty in Nightshifted. I realise its not their actual name, but come on, thats just ridiculous.

message 25: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Those are some names that would distract me from the story.

Me, too. "Meaty" is one of them.

Parvathy | 242 comments "Schuyler" from Blue Bloods. Still don't know how the name is pronounced.

message 28: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments So I just finished The Selection and I gotta say, two names in there just irritated me to no end.

Aspen...after the place or the tree? Didn't like the name with my friend in high school, don't like it now.

America Singer....so named after a country that (in the book) ran itself into banruptcy, was taken over by the Chinese and then fought off being taken over again by the Russians. What a compliment! And Singer? And guess what...she's a singer for a profession! The eye roll just about knocked me over. HATED that name.

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Parvathy wrote: ""Schuyler" from Blue Bloods. Still don't know how the name is pronounced."

That is one of my pet peeves about names in books that are uncommon. Could the author at least have the person introduce them selves to someone saying "Hi, my name is Schuyler rhymes with fuller or Tyler?" Is that truly too much to ask?

message 30: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Lisarenee wrote: ""Hi, my name is Schuyler rhymes with fuller or Tyler?" Is that truly too much to ask? "

That would be nice. Sometimes I feel stupid when I can't pronounce a character's name. I feel like everyone else can pronounce it except for me, glad that's not the case.

I don't mind Aspen's name so much. I once read a book where all the main characters were named after major cities in Texas -- Dallas, Austin, Houston. Drove me nuts!!

message 32: by Stefani (new)

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Now that would make me want to poke my eyeballs out lol. Thank God it wasn't that bad!

Just regular romance, pretty tame actually I've never read one a book by her where the sex scene was vague and short, and took place between married people lol. The author used to go to my church when I was a teenager and she was involved in my youth group.

There are a few books with those characters, the first one that comes to mind for me is

One Magic Moment (De Piaget, #13) by Lynn Kurland
