Phil | 11856 comments I'll be in Portland sometime this summer, on my way to McMinnville. No dates yet.

I'll also be in San Diego for a single weekend in July, and in L.A. sometime to take my son to see the Dodgers.

Maybe I'll get to meet someone, eh?

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

McMinnville is just a suburb of Portland, Phil...a slightly boring one. The only reason we ever go there is to hit Fry's. However, you let us know when you'll be here, we'll take you to Powell's and dinner then too! :) Right, Jacks????

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Gail, if I ever make it to Australia will you protect me from the funnel-webs?

Australia scares me. Too many things to bite you and kill you...

You could come to Oregon any time! Course, you'd want to wait until July or August when it isn't going to pour down rain the whole time!!

This is where I live:

Lmao, we almost moved there when I was in middle school. My mom's good friend lived there and she was convinced we needed to leave the evils of California behind. I guess my dad's job chose not to be flexible.

Right, Ames!

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Powell's seems like a great bookstore. I'd really love to visit someday.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Powell's is the BEST BOOKSTORE IN THE WORLD, Jonathan!!!
No, seriously, it is.

McMinnville is on the winery tour of Oregon. Oregon really does have some excellent wines, too. And the Oregon coast is FANTASTIC!
There's no real reason to go to Salem, though.

message 61: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I'm sold. Now I just need to find some pretext to make the trip.

Jonathan, you could come for Art in the Pearl and get work to pay for it! :)

http://www.artinthepearl.com/2011/AIT...

The Pearl District is the shee shee area just East of N.W. 23rd (the cool place to be). Powell's is just where the one meets up with the other, pretty much.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments You should come, Jonathan! I would love to visit New York City sometime...

And I want to go to Australia and visit Gail, and go snorkeling, and go on a very tame tourist version of walkabout and see koalas and kangaroos and kookaburras, if possible. :)

I will be in New Orleans for the American Library Association convention in June, and I know some of us were planning a get together there, I don't remember which dates we were considering... Heidi?

If you're going to the Oregon Coast, hit Cannon Beach or Manzanita...avoid Seaside unless you like commercial stuff like arcades and elephant ears.

Cannon is my favorite.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h...

Quaint shops, nice B&Bs, Haystack Rock and even some tide pools...I like tide pools.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Me, too, Ames! Cannon Beach is the best. I love Haystack Rock!

You know, that might just be possible, Amelia. I'll have to look into it.

And yes, Jackie, you should definitely come visit New York.

Not too far, just to Milwaukie. I grew up in Damascus until I was 15 and then in Troutdale for the rest of high school. It had been my home base for 16 years, until I bought my own house!

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent! That means you can keep April 9th open and spend it with Jacks and me!! :)

(I used to live on Queen Rd. in Milwaukie, one block S.E. of Linwood and King Rd., in fact, I only moved to Troutdale two years ago when I got married. Too windy.)

Have you been to Wichita Pub in the strip-mally thingy on the S.W. corner of Linwood and King Rd.? GREAT burgers and sandwiches!!

Oh, and in Downtown Milwaukie (just East of McLoughlin Blvd) there is a darling place for breakfast. I used to always get the smoked salmon omlette - YUM!!

Phil | 11856 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "Me, too, Ames! Cannon Beach is the best. I love Haystack Rock!"

When I was younger I spent at least a week at that beach every summer. My mom would send me to my grandma's house in Portland for a few weeks, and grandma's neighbor had a cabin a few steps from the beach, less than 1/4 mile from Haystack.

I think they probably sold the cabin for a million or two at some point. Never charged us a penny, though.

Great memories, including the time I was stuck on Haystack when the tide came in. Yoiks!

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

My grandparents had a beach house in Seaview in Washington, so I spent all of my growing up years in Long Beach. Every summer, holiday, nice weekend we were up there until I was 16 and they sold it. I never even went to an Oregon beach until I was in High School, a Senior in fact!

I've got you covered Amelia. I'm bullet chomp proof when it comes to things that bite. I also come with a special force field that protects all friends.

Sounds perfect!!

My grandparents have a house on Devil's Lake in Lincoln City. It's always been a super fun place to go because you have all of the fun of a lake and then can zip over and be walking on the beach in just under 10 minutes.

I love the Oregon Coast!

Long Beach is the only place along the coast even windier than Oregon beaches.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I live in Troutdale, there's nowhere on the planet windier...

message 76: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I like Troutdale.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Shoot, Ames, I just remembered I have book group on the 9th. Can we move our plans to the 16th of April? Please?

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

16th works for me, it was only the 22nd (weekend of) that I'm away.

Hear that Larry, post poned to the 16th, that work better than the 9th for you?

message 79: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No, unfortunately I'll be in the Los Angeles area that day.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Amelia wrote: "16th works for me, it was only the 22nd (weekend of) that I'm away."

Okay, yay! I will plan to spend all of the 16th in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

They had two gang shootings in McMinnville last night, Phil.

I know, gangs in McMinnville...wonder if they're riding horses now instead of driving low riders? Hello! Supposed to be an inner CITY problem.

*wanders off shaking head in disbelief*
