Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments KD: First page pa lang ng Atlas Shrugged nakakawalang gana na. Binasa ko rin yung The Art of Fiction niya. Insightful, pero sana hindi na niya ininclude yung works niya sa samples. Para tuloy dinedefend niya yung mga iyon, na kahit idefend pa niya boring pa rin, hehe.

Tapos sabi pa niya write only what is necessary. So necessary lahat ng pages na iyon? Na parang fine print na ang font size?

Respondents to the Survey of Lifetime Reading Habits, conducted [fall 1991] for the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Library of Congress' Center for the Book, cited the following when asked to name a book that had made a difference in their lives:

1.The Bible**
2. Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Monique: Yep! Basta June 6 onwards. Tayong dalawa lang ba?

William: Thanks for the info. I still intend to read Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead. Maybe sa 2013. Unahin ko muna mga 100 books ng Time.

message 355: by [deleted user] (new)

Maybe I can read it again with you guys sometime in the future :)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Seryoso? Babasahin mo ulit yun? Mukhang malaki talaga ang impact sayo. :)

Let's check with Emir again pag malapit-lapit na. Ikaw na mag-open ng thread ha. Okay sa kin ang June 6. Unless you want another reading buddy, we can wait until someone else joins us. :)

message 358: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Open ko na yung thread para may time yung iba to get a copy and join us. At first time ko gagawa ng thread, hahaha.

KD we still need to read Anna Karenina. And I agree with Angus, we should be focusing more on reactions and discussions rather than summarizing the book.

message 365: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Yes. It's just that sometimes the 2 actually become one. It is hard to express your thoughts without telling a bit of the summary.

When is Anna Karenina? That's what I have not been reading for a long time now: Russian literature.

message 366: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I want to read Anna Karenina, but I just read a huge Russian brick this year. I think I'll go for it next year.

message 367: by Regine (new)

Regine | 121 comments KD I agree. But a full summary,as we've been doing, is unnecessary. Maybe we can start it June 15th?

message 368: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments I'm game for Anna Karenina on June 15th.
I actually miss you as my reading buddy!
I also miss reading classics. I must read either Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre this month too.
Sometime soon, I must pick up East of Eden also.
No, we don't summarize anymore (see what's going on with our Egan book).

I love this book! But I've very recently read this.

message 371: by Regine (new)

Regine | 121 comments KD--I miss you as a reading buddy too!

I love East of Eden. It's my favourite Steinbeck book. As for the Brontes, you know that I just loved Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights was beautifully written, but the story just wasn't for me. I absolutely hated everyone in the book!

message 372: by Krystine (last edited Jun 02, 2011 10:32PM) (new)

Krystine | 46 comments Hey guys! I need your help.
My school requires us, students to read three classics this year. a)Beowulf b)The Merchant of Venice c)Pride and Prejudice
I suck at classics and English is one of my fail subjects so I was wondering if someone could help me understand 'em by buddy reading any of those books.

I understand if you're too busy and can't buddy read with me but I was just hoping/wondering. Thanks sa magaaccept. :)

message 373: by Regine (new)

Regine | 121 comments I love both The Merchant of Venice and Pride and Prejudice. I might not be able to do a buddy read with you, but please feel free to hit me up with questions.

message 374: by Krystine (new)

Krystine | 46 comments OMG! Thanks Regine. :)

It's already open, two weeks (?) ago pa. :D

message 377: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments Waah, ganun ba, sorry! Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember the thread... Have I left comments on it? I can't recall, heehee. Senior moment :P

By the way, are we going by 2 chapters a day? I'm about to finish Chapter 4 tonight. 2 days backlog if we're supposed to start Monday.

Sorry about that, Angus. :(

message 378: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Atty. Monique: Ayos lang, haha. Medyo lumubog din kasi siya kasi may mga active threads pa. Yep, two chapters a day tayo. :)

LOL I've also seen the 2002 remake with Angela Bettis with a very different ending.

message 380: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments May remake pa pala? Pati yung Filipino version starring Gladys Reyes. I think it's entitled Anak ng Dilim.

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 122 comments Angus wrote: "May remake pa pala? Pati yung Filipino version starring Gladys Reyes. I think it's entitled Anak ng Dilim."

I've seen the remake first, actually. Then checked out the original. In fact, may Carrie 2 pa yung remake. Iba talaga yung ending. XD

message 382: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Mia, you can join KD and Regine for Anna Karenina, there's already a thread under Reading Buddies. It's going to start on June 15. :)

message 383: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments No problem. :) That is a huuuge read. I'm not inclined to read another Russian novel this year because I just finished his other huuuge book last March, War and Peace.

message 384: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments MIA and KEN: I'd love to read 'Wuthering' with you but I've already committed to Regine and my next Tolstoy. So, maybe next time. My next to this classic is 'Jane Eyre' (shame on me for not reading this yet).

I am also planning to read 'Catch-22' sometime after Anna Karenina.

message 386: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Me!

message 387: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianejan3) | 21 comments I has been MIA for awhile. Did everyone do Tropic of Cancer and Les Misérables already?

I have a collection of books I haven't had the inclination to read, so if anyone was planning to read any of these I would like to join you:
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe , King Lear by William Shakespeare , Fool by Christopher Moore , Macbeth by William Shakespeare , Night Shift by Stephen King , Four Kinds of Rain by Robert Ward

message 388: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments DIANE: I am interested to be your reading buddy for 1st, 2nd and 4rd books. I have been seeing copies of the 6th book, is it good? What made you buy it?

message 389: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianejan3) | 21 comments That's great. Thanks K.D.!
I'm not sure whether or not the 6th book is good. It has been praised for it's plot twists and is said to be a dark & delightful noir novel. I (not having read anything noir) was intrigued. Plus it was cheap. xD

Anymore takers? The more the merrier.

message 390: by Krystine (last edited Jun 13, 2011 06:17AM) (new)

Krystine | 46 comments Diane: Macbeth. :) Meron akong No Fear Shakespeare version e. haha :))

K.D. Really? Wow okay thanks. :) Any other for The Merchant of Venice (Folger Shakespeare Library) by William Shakespeare sa August pa nga lang. ?? :)

message 391: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianejan3) | 21 comments Thanks Kriss! Cool, I love No Fear versions, though I don't have those. xD
I might be able to find a copy of Merchant of Venice by August, so count me in. ;D

So when are you guys available for Macbeth? ;D

message 392: by Krystine (new)

Krystine | 46 comments Yayy!
About Macbeth, you decide. :)

message 393: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments KRYSS: Create ka na ng thread. We can read WS books one after the other. I have No-Fear copies of Merchant of Venice, Othello, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. I also want to read (again) his Sonnets.

In fact, I have this Illustrated Complete Works of William Shakespeare so kahit anong gusto ninyo meron ako. But it is nice to have a No-Fear individual books. Easier to read.

message 394: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice | 34 comments @Kuya Doni: If ever you decide to read Othello, I might be able to pop in the conversations here and there. It's probably the most tragic of Shakespeare's works, considering that Iago is one of his most menacing characters.

message 395: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianejan3) | 21 comments Coolies. Shakespeare marathon. Add King Lear to the mix pls. :D

message 396: by K.D. (last edited Jun 16, 2011 06:49PM) (new)

message 397: by Krizia Anna (new)

Krizia Anna (krizia_lazaro) | 520 comments I'll be reading A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin really soon. Who wants to read with me?

message 398: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Oh, I don't have that book, Krizia. Sorry. :)

message 399: by James (new)

James Nicolay | 3 comments Shakespeare! If you need a teacher, ehem, I can help discuss Macbeth and R&J since I've been teaching them for a long time already. Haha.

Krizia, I just finished A Game of Thrones. Way awesome. Watch the tv series as well because it's pretty faithful and will help you visualize the NUMEROUS characters and places.

message 400: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Good to know, James. Last year, we were thinking of having poetry reading (Shakespeare sonnets) during Meet Up 2. It did not materialize since no one would want to lead. Maybe next month?
