Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments @Beatrice: I can read 1984 with you, but I need to finish my current Atwood read first. That okay? :)

@Lynai: I just came across a copy of the first and eighth books in the Mitford series at Booksale, do you have those already? :) Also, let me know if you still want to read Room, ha. I read the comments thread in K.D.'s review, grabe ang reactions, haha! :)

Sure. Hehehe

message 103: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice | 34 comments @Angus: Sure, April 15 sounds like a good day kasi the week after that is my spring break. I'll be able to read a lot then. :)

@Monique: That's fine! Just tell me nalang po if ever you're ready. :)

message 104: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Bea, I will join you and Angus for "Brave New World" by Huxley. Although I am not sure if I will be in the position to explain because I have not read any of his book. Please agree with Angus when is the time you are ready. I can join you anytime. I still have some broadband. I can have 3 reading-buddies books as long as they are not real serious works.

I've read 1984 already. I am not up to another Murakami for the moment. I would like to read with you "A Farewell to Arms" but I am not yet a fan of Ernest Hemingway. (I read his Old Man and The Sea and it did not rub me the right way I guess). I have a copy of "The Devil in the White City" but no motivation to read it yet (so it is in the bottom of my tbr pile).

message 105: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice | 34 comments @K.D.: I have started the book before (and stopped by the time I finished the third chapter; I blame my new Kindle) and from what I've read, it doesn't take a lot of deep thought, unlike Murakami's works which can get pretty confusing. Huxley seems to be pretty straightforward. However I wouldn't really be in a place to say so, because I've only read an inkling of the book.

I had the same problems with Hemingway as well. I have a couple of friends who are extreme fans of his, but I've tried to read A Farewell to Arms thrice and I couldn't get past the first chapter. That's probably why I need to have reading buddies so I can be motivated to finish it.

Really looking forward to being reading buddies with you! I hope you don't mind my slow pace because I'm currently juggling my lit class with my recreational reading.

message 106: by Regine (new)

Regine | 121 comments @ Bea, I have read "Brave New World". I'm tackling about three different books around the time your reading it, so I won't join for the reading, but I'll definitely be joining discussions on this book. I still have all of my analysis notes for this book :)

I've also read "A Farewell to Arms", I'm willing to be your reading buddy, just as long as it takes place sometime in May.

message 107: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments So, the schedule seems to be:

APRIL 15: BRAVE NEW WORLD (Bea, K.D. and Angus)

MAY TBD: A FAREWELL TO ARMS (Bea, Regine and K.D.)

BEA: I don't mind slow reading. I can have more than 5 currently-reading books. I always believe that there are books that you can read even while in a crowded noisy place while there are books that you have to be in complete silence and full concentration for you to understand them.

message 108: by Lynai (new)

Lynai | 1188 comments MONIQUE: Books 7 and 9 na lang kulang ko sa Mitford Series. And yes, very lively ang discussion sa review ni K.D. of Room. I'm still up to reading it, though. I am getting very much curious, especially with all those reactions differing from K.D.'s. :)

message 109: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I always thought that Brave New World is made of strong stuff. Anyway, I'm all set. I will check my copy to see how we can segment it. :)

I will also try to join A Farewell to Arms if I can get my copy. 80% of my books are in Baguio City. I should consider towing them here, haha.

message 110: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice | 34 comments @Regine: I'm really looking forward to discussing the books with you! :)

@K.D.: I will probably be able to read a bit fast because I have that week off; however, I am not sure if I will be able to access the web for the April 16-18 since my family and I are going somewhere, I think. But I will bring my laptop just in case the place we will be staying in has access to the web.

@Angus: I think it really is. That's why I can never read it all by myself. I'd be itching to talk about it after every chapter, and if I read it by myself I wouldn't have anyone to talk to ahaha. And cool, I hope you can join us! I love reading with a lot of people.

message 111: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments BEA: That's what this is all about. The buddies read at the same time so they can talk to each other.

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments KWESI: Pinagpalit si Saramago kay MacDougal!

ANGUS: Are you still up for Saramago? I counted the chapters yesterday and they are 24.
Considering that it will start on Tuesday, April 5.
Options:
2 chapters a day - finish by Friday, Apr 16
3 chapters a day - finish by Tuesday, Apr 12.

Let me know which one you prefer.

message 119: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Yep, I can do 3 chapters a day. I just bought the pink one a few hours ago, haha. April 5 then. Ayos na rin yun, medyo naeexcite na ako eh, LOL.

message 127: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments LYNAI: We have Brave New World starting on that day too! When are you going to end?

message 128: by Lynai (new)

Lynai | 1188 comments K.D. Haven't really talked with Rollie yet. I still have to see how long it will take me to finish Speak. But maybe we'll try to finish in a week or two.

message 129: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments That's okay, Lynai. I still have CANTERBURY TALES with Regine.

message 130: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I've read A Thousand Acres years ago. I think it has one of the most shocking endings among the books that I've read.

message 131: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments I saw the movie and it is just dramatic. The shock is umm for me just okay. I read some novels (or other movies) with that before.

message 132: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I was shocked because I didn't see it coming. Or maybe I didn't realize the clues all over.

Gone With the Wind
All the King's Men
The Grapes of Wrath (Thanks, Jason!)

Maybe May? Or June? I'll keep my fingers crossed. :D

All righty. Tempted to buy the Olive edition of Brave New World. The copy I have (the one I told you about last night) is quite nondescript.
