Wanted: Reading Buddies

I just got a copy of Cold Mountain last night (pero binigyan na ako ni Miss Veronica ng 1st edition, :D). It's about farming and walking. And farming and walking. And farming and walking. Kidding! :D

Those are not poetic ek-ek. Their plots are full, taut and clear.
I have no problem with poetic ek-ek. Kahit stream-of-consciousness ni Woolf or Faulkner, gusto ko. Ayaw ko lang yong trying hard. First impression ko yan kay Banville sa "The Sea" pero parang I want to try reading it again. Now that I am older ha ha.

Yes, The Sea was poetic, but, not in a good way. I didn't like that book. Cold Mountain isn't like that though...

Yes, a poetic book can have full strong plot. It's just that books like those can be wordy and some people - those people who want fast action and event-driven plots - may find them boring. I mean those people who read and enjoy the books of Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy and John Grisham.
Cold Mountain was described by my officemate-friend as a story that can be told if you remove half of the pages. In other words, very wordy.
Which is an irony. Poets tell their message in the shortest way possible. So, maybe "Cold Mountain" is also not poetic but just wordy and maybe my friend is right. Maybe, boring. :)

At pang-asar lang ang The Gathering because I know a lot of people hate the book. I kinda like it. 3-stars. I'm thinking of changing it to 4-stars. LOL.

Lagi nyang binabanggit. Di naman gay ang author. Babae naman. Strange.

Nakakaloka kasi nireveal niya yung traumatizing events sa buhay ng kapatid niya, and then hindi naman pala siya sure sa details nun (sa kotse ba o sa kwarto?), which makes the reader wonder whether the narrator is telling the truth or not. At talagang pinag-usapan siya rito, hahaha.

Well, it DOES matter. Otherwise, walang usapin, hahaha.

BTW, KD, by "poetic" do you mean mainly, stream of consciousness (kasi Faulkner and Woolf ang ginamit mong examples)...? For me, poetic doesn't necessarily translate to stream of consciousness...

"poetic" kapag ginagamitan ng elements ng poetry ang narration. Not necessarily ang form kundi ang references sa events, symbolisms, metaphors, etc. Not sure how to describe it pero stream-of-consciousness easily comes to mind.

I think traumatic is subjective. Could it be that the brother actually enjoyed it?

At para makasunod ako sa thread, I'll start reading Invisible Man or All the King's Men tomorrow. If there are any takers for a buddy read, please let me know.
The Inheritance of Loss buddy read, hahaha.

ALL THE KING'S MEN parang timely kasi malapit na ang pasko, THREE KINGS! ha ha. Kaso, I have to look for my copy na nasa likod ng likod ng likod ng shelves ha ha. Simula na ba? Ano pang naka-line up mo? Nasa last 100 pages ako ng Inheritance of Loss. Maganda ah.

The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder hehehe.

Or you can just alert me kapag available na ang copy mo.
H: Yung "Shout outs" thread functions as that. Kahit anong rants and raves pa yun, book-related or not.
Dante: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens? :D

@Dante: No...it's sort of fashioned like a children's book, but it's about solving a type of puzzle/mystery. It's not Philosophical...that's Sophie's World (same author).

Dante: YW, but really, I haven't read that yet. :D

The Five Christmas Books
17 December 1843: A Christmas Carol (Christmas Eve ang setting)
16 December 1844: The Chimes (New Year's Eve ang setting)
20 December 1845: The Cricket on the Hearth
19 December 1846: The Battle of Life
19 December 1848: The Haunted Man
