While I'm thinking about it, let me ask for clarification. Are you saying you'd prefer not to have anthologies or samplers, but are asking just for stories? If anthologies work, my library has them in the non-fiction section.
Correct, I am just looking for stories. For example, in the Pippi books, each chapter tells a separate story of Pippi and her friends..."Pippi goes to the school" or "Pippi arranges a picnic". Same characters, different adventure.
Don't forget about the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. You can get one book with the complete collection: The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh, and the kids of different ages will find different things to enjoy in them.
Not sure if your listeners are boys or girls, but I would suggest Soup by Robert Newton Peck - which has self contained chapters, and Homer Price by Robert McCloskey with six story chapters. If you don't like one of the chapters, you can skip it!

I have a 3 little friends who I read to each week. They are ages 5, 7, and 9. They love all kinds of books, the only problem is, it is hard to have all of them present at the same time, and invariably one child misses a chapter or two.
We are currently reading the Pippi Longstocking books, and this has been great because each chapter tells a separate story that does not have to be read in chronological order.
Do you have any other suggestions for books like that? I have been told Joan Aiken's books fit this category, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
