SOLVED!: Sherlock Holmes story [s]

This is a story by Arthur Conan Doyle, and there's a mystery with a back story that takes place several years earlier when two characters are lost in the desert. I read it almost 30 years ago and want to reread it, but cannot remember what it's called. Thanks!

Half of A Study in Scarlet is a back story. It does involve a father and daughter wandering out west in the Utah desert. I have only read a few Sherlock Holmes stories, so this is my best guess from my limited knowledge!
