I do like you, actually! I just wish I could take credit for the birthday thing... Gavin must like you as well!

You are so sweet. I'm really glad they you're having a good time with the books! At the start I was quite worried that I might let everyone down with such a huge story, but you've been truly wonderful readers!

You're a gem, Ginn. And this is my shout-out to Gavin: Gavin, you're a hero, man. You all inadvertently make my life complete. <3

I don't have the icon for 'grinning like a far too flattered idiot', but please picture me doing so.

I could probably draw that , but I have a feeling it would look profoundly disturbing D:

LOL! And I'd like to echo how much I'm enjoying this - the book and the discussion :) And the mad speculating... *evil grin*

Rifter Book Five releases July 11. The books are released on the second Tuesday of each month.

I've just discovered this group and I haven't read any comments in the threads, but I wanted to say hallo.
Also I'd like to compliment Ginn and Nicole about the great idea of publishing ''The Rifter'' in installments. Not only because it is a reminiscence of many great books which were first published this way, but also because it is beneficial for people like me: when a book is gripping, often I jump forward to see what's happening. Of course I reread later, but still I find it stupid, because it spoils the suspense. In this case it just isn't possible ;-).
For the rest: the first book was so incredibly awesome that I doubted the rest could stay at the same level, but the awesomeness is constant!
Ciao
Antonella

Stay strong, my compatriots. Our goal is nearly at hand. We shall persevere! >.<

Halloo there, Antonella. Glad to have you on-board for the shenanigans…and deep thinking. There’s a lot to think about around here. Oh, and have a song. Because that’s how I say hey, little sister
Also, I’ll admit when this venture first started, I was wary of the whole concept of releasing the novel in installments because I am very inpatient. I was imagining the horror of sleepless nights spent rolling around, pulling my hair, crying WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT I MUST KNOW OR I WILL DIE. I'm liking it though! It’s a different sort of experience, and chatting about it on the threads is sort of like being in a book club. XD

RIGHT. Never surrender!

Thank you for the welcome! I had already heard the song but I had never seen the videoclip. And you are an artist, and a talented one!
One of your illustrations is about

Ciao!

I loved that book by Jesse too! The inter-webs are so vast, and yet so small.
I think The Rifter is getting better with every installment. The wait is agony though. I tell myself that patience builds character, but I'm not convinced.

It’s a nice day for a white wedding XD
Holy hell, God Eaters is an awesome book. Fan-peoples UNITE! And…You looked at my gallery? I love you forever. <3 We shall have much fun here on the Rifter threads.

Am I the only one who was sure book 5 would come out yesterday (and worked till late on Monday to have more time to read on Tuesday)?
I was quite disappointed when I found out there is still one week to go, but at the same time I think it is a good idea for me to reread books 3 and 4 or part of them. Reading the comments here I kept thinking: ''I have to reread this or that bit''.

Hey Antonella,
For some reason, Goodreads had the wrong date listed in their new releases email. Just for your future information: The Rifter books release on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. So July 11, Aug 8, etc., through Dec 12.
Cheers,
NK

Sorry this took ages to reply to. I must have missed it. The Irregulars will be released in March. It's me, Ginn, Josh and Astrid Amara. Currently we are in the part of the shared world project experience where we all try and make the details of the world consistent throughout the stories. It takes a little while but the effect is worth it.

The names are immediately and strikingly diverse -- John (Christian), Kahlil (Arab/Muslim) and Ravi* (Hindu) -- bringing up a lot of cultural context for those of us born and brought up east of the Nile and west of the Mekong, although I doubt it means anything much for those not...

But Ginn, I mean that in the very best way :)

I think it's going to be released in Spring of 2012. Though I think that Nicole got to this one way before me. :)

Hey ns! Good question.
The names were intentionally diverse.
For the primary characters I chose names that evoked as much about them mentally and physically as possible--to give me a fighting chance of remembering them among all the other characters and to keep their physical attributes straight while I was jumping back and forth between timelines and settings.
I picked John for it's biblical associations, Kahlil, because he's the friend and companion to John and Ravi because the sun symbolizes the Payshmura church and he begins the book as the best of them and their greatest hope.
Laurie is derived from the word laurel-- used as a symbol of victory and Bill got his name because it comes from the resolute William, but has obviously wandered a bit. ;)

Actually, it's a great description! :D

Aha! So it did help, because that's exactly how I was seeing them: John -- biblical, Khalil -- friend, and Ravi -- the sun, and a source of light.
I did miss the giant connection of the emblem of the Payshmura church, though. I was seeing the sun connection also as a source of warmth and enlightenment, and something that rises and sets periodically, and reading too much into that ;).
As the other names were so evocative, I had jumped straight to William the Conqueror (for Bill) and laurel wreath (for Laurie), and was thinking (at the time of reading #1 and #2) they might play a much more important political role than otherwise (as it's looking, now having read #3 and #4). Of course, still we know NOTHING....
I don't know, I may have too many Julius Caesar images running in my head, I want to go see that play!)

I never would have expected anyone else to notice my use of the names as mental notes, but I'm so pleased that you did!

Well, if they had been Scandinavian or Russian it would have been harder :), but with Kahlil and Ravi, because that's what the words mean, it was immediately rich and meaningful to me, at least, and it made me look at the others as well a little more carefully. Of course, knowing the languages and having had a Kahlil and of course, many Ravi*'s in my life helped...I really do love it when the author takes so much care about every detail -- it makes it a much more satisfying experience!
Starting Rifter 5 tonight, can't wait!

The names always have a strong impact on how I perceive the characters. Even not knowing the meaning of certain names they create associations through former encounters in other books/movies/rl or experiences of any kind.
As these associations are different for everone it might seem strange to someone else when I compare Jahn/John to the John Smith of Pocahontas. He is nearly alone in a strange land where nothing is like he knows from his own country. Ravishan brings a picture to mind taken from "Around the World in Eighty Days" when the heroes travel through India where they save this young woman who is to be sacraficed on a pyre. And Khalil, although I recognise it as a name from the middle east, reminds me of Kali, the Hindu godess of time and change, which seems to fit into the context.

Those are cool associations... Though now I'm picturing John and Ravishan cast in their own version of 'Around the World in Eighty Days'...lol.

Wicked Gentlemen was the first Ginn Hale book I ever read oh-so-many years ago! I was a but youngin’ back then. NO REGRETS! \o/
In my mind (where Wicked Gentlemen is a movie) the opening credits would to this song here . Visualize an eerily lit slow pan shot along the wall frieze that leads down/up to/ from Hells Below... @,@ I’ve been trying to illustrate that wall frieze for ages. There is not a piece of watercolor paper big enough x.x
