I know that we are all busy, but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a "group read" sort of book club style?

It would be read at everyone's own pace with threads for different parts of the book, so you can participate without having finished the whole thing.

Maybe we could do a "classic" or a book that is a free e-book and widely available at everyone's library?

Anyone interested? Also, suggestions for books are welcome, too.

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments what book are you thinking of? any in particular? I would be interested. thanks

I don't have one in mind, so I'm open to suggestions :)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I do not care for sci fic or rip the bodice off romance. Other wise pretty flexible. As I know we are all busy people, might be good to not have a way long long one. I read daily, my way of remaining sane LOL) but I know not eveyone gets too. hummmmm hopefully the others will toss in suggestions as we seem pretty laid back LOL. what are you reading now?

I'm reading this really strange book of short stories by Miranda July.

My friend got it for me for christmas. She always picks the perfect book/poem for me, so I'm waiting for it to hit me.

It's interesting, but not a wild page turner.

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments How about "Red Hook Road" by Ayelet Waldman or maybe that one Wendy a peep and on FB suggested today to buy that her friend wrote, it was "In the Past Imperfect" by Isabelle Solal, and right now as a kindle book it is $3.49 It looks good

Future Cat Lady (future-cat-lady) | 30 comments Mod
I think that both are good choices, but I can only find the kindle version of Solal's book. I am more of a physical book kind of girl.

message 8: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments Hummm I do not know if Solal's book is a hard copy book. I got it as a kindle book, have you checked other spots, let me know where you checked and I can check the ones I know.

message 9: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Murray | 12 comments I would be interested in joining in. I would love to explore new books, but never seem to move away from my tried and true authors.

I am like Riding, I cannot read SciFi or Harlequin romances. My love is mystery, but like I said above, I would like to stretch out of my comfort zone.
I have a kindle, so I can get my hands on the Isabelle Solal book.

I checked amazon and bn.com and couldn't find it. :/

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I will ask Wendy on FB if she knows if it is a hard copy book too

message 12: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I have a way to possibly get the book in PDF for FCL, How many of us are planning to do the read, and will get it on our kindles? I have it on mine already

message 13: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments I have a nook and can't get the book either

message 14: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments oh dang...well the lady who wrote the book is a friend of a person from MM peeps, so maybe we can see what can be done. she, of course, wants to be able to sell copies not just give all away. I thought there was a way to share kindle books with nooks now? in a pdf format or something? or get a kindle ap on a computer or phone etc?

message 15: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments I can probably get a kindle app on my computer but I don't always have access to the computer so that's not that practical, it would take me forever to read it. If it becomes available in nook format let me know.

message 16: by Riding (last edited Mar 08, 2011 12:14PM) (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I will ask about that format too :)

message 17: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments Did we ever decide on a book to read as a group? does it have to be the whole group of us, or can the ones who want to read it share and have several mini rads going on? Just checking cause I am getting close (not toooo close) to being ready to finish the book I am reading and read the next one. I was not sure if we were going to read "In the Past Imperfect" as a group. It does not matter to me, but I do not want to read it wasy ahead of everyone. Thanks and let me know

I think that we'll have to pick a book that is available in hard copy as well as ebook.

Read away, Riding! Let me know how it is :)

Do you know who the peep is? We can ask them to tell her that we'd like the book in paper. maybe the interest can drum up some paper copies!

message 19: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I am going too read it shortly :) And I also downloaded and there is also a hard copy of "Death Along the Sprit road" By Curt Wendelboe. He is a retured deputy who worked in my county and I worked with him for many years. It is based on an area where I was born, Pine Ridge SD. he is having his book signing tomorrow at our library from 2-4, I think I will attend. does anyone have any suggestions or desires. Look up Curt's book too I think it sounds good.

message 20: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments Peep with the friend who is the Author is Wendypiqmael (sp) on last part :)

message 21: by Angela (last edited Mar 20, 2011 06:13AM) (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments Death Along the Spirit Road is in nook or kindle format for $10, paper back for a little less.

I'd love to do a group read, just let me know. I have no suggestions though. sorry. If I think of any I'll post.

ok only suggestion I can think of is Little Bee by Chris Cleave.

I googled "book club book suggestions" and there is an amazon page. This book looks interesting- it's a murder mystery.

It's called "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" by Alan Bradley. It's $9.19 paperback and $10 for Kindle.

The amazon book club page looks great, too.

message 24: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments There are also 2 good ones by Lisa Genova "Left Neglected" from Amazon kindle $11.99, book $14.64
and "Still Alice" kindle $9.99 book $9.18 the Alice book is one about a harvard professor in the early onset of Alzheimer's, and how it affects her life as it progressesd. Left Nglected is a busy working mom is in a horrible auto accident and suffers from "left Neglect" a brain disorder and how it affects her life, her husbands and her children. I have both on my kindle. Just tossing titles out. I am about half way through "In the Past Imperfect" by Isabelle Solal, will not say more so as to not spoil it for those who have yet to read it.

message 25: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Murray | 12 comments I would be interested in any of the titles you guys have suggested. I am trying to expand my horizons outside of my mysteries and thrillers, but have a hard time drumming up any interest in books just by their titles. This will be a good way for me to explore and discuss.

message 26: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments well I vote we just pick one and jump in and we can try another one next time! so whose in?? once we know who all wants to do it, we pick a book and go! yeah

message 27: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments I'm in, don't care which book it is as long as I can get it on the nook.

message 28: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments ok, then four of us for sure, FCL, watsherface, wild kitties and me? so far it aappears we are the four in this thread. anyone else? then we should pick a book and start and anyone else and join in later or participate in our next one :) does that sound ok?

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments sounds good to me.

message 30: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments ok lets pick! :)

message 31: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyk) Hi guys,

I don't log in to goodreads very often, but I'd be interested in a group read. I'm most interested in The Sweetness at The Bottom of the Pie but I can go with the flow.

-Pants

message 32: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments oh good another reader! FCL what are your thoughts? and everyone else :)

message 33: by Kristin (new)

Kristin I started the Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie but just didn't like it and never finished it. You're all welcome to give it a shot though. Let me know if it's worth finishing :)

message 34: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I was wondering myself, it sounded more like something my DD2 would enjoy. But I can try to get it at the library if it is the one chosen. I most likely will not buy it on my kindle. I am just starting Dealth Along the Spirit Road, and IT is cool, he references locations and last names I recognize. I enjoy books like that, I can picture the places he is going in my mind clear as a bell.

message 35: by Kristin (new)

Kristin It definitely had some interesting vocabulary and characters, but 200 pages in I still didn't care who the killer was so I gave up.

message 36: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Murray | 12 comments So out of the suggested books is there one we are ready to choose?

I will be going to the library tomorrow and want to see if one of the choices is there before buying it for my kindle.

Sweetness at The Bottom of the Pie, Death Along the Spirit Road, Still Alice, Left Neglected or Little Bee. I will probably be bringing more than one of these home tomorrow anyway (if in stock).

My vote is for the first book, mainly because I love a good mystery (even though I am trying to expose myself to other genres).

message 37: by Random (new)

Random Lurker | 2 comments Thanks for the link FCL! I've never been in a book club before but I love to read, I'm good for whatever is chosen!

message 38: by Future (new)

Future Cat Lady (future-cat-lady) | 30 comments Mod
We can do more than one group read :)

We can do Sweetness and Death Along the Spirit Road, if that is agreeable.

Read both or just one, whatever is your fancy.

we'll call the official start Monday so we have the weekend to get books.

How are the books broken up? Chapters? by pages?
That way people can join in threads without worrying about spoilers...
(I don't have the books yet, so if anyone wants to start threads, feel free!)

message 39: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments Death Along the Spirit Road is chapters. and it is a fast going, like he is telling you the story, not writing it down? and for me as I was born in that area and go visit family, so many of the towns and landmarks and places in Pine Ridge and that area are very familiar to me and no exact names obviously, but there are certain names of the area and some of the last names are those of my relatives LOL, just watching for a *Riding* talked about LOL

so we begin to read Monday? I might be done and then try the sweetness book, cause is it available on kindle? If I dot not enjoy (and one never knows :) I bet my girls will and I will just rad the next one(s) we pick after these two

message 40: by Future (new)

Future Cat Lady (future-cat-lady) | 30 comments Mod
hehehehe. :) That's why I love books that are set in Philadelphia.

If you have any other books you want to start on Monday, feel free to post them for group read.

message 41: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments OK, esp when my DH is on nights I read tons tons tons! I mean I read lots when he is home, but more when I can go to bed early and read late LOL. I truly cannot imagine my life without reading, I would give up food first and that IS aaying a lot :O) I like some foods LOL

message 42: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Murray | 12 comments I got the Sweetness book last night. I will start with this on Sun(?) I hope. Going away this weekend so no reading time for whatsherface.

I am excited for my first book in a book club!!!!!!

message 43: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments I'll start with Sweetness, I just downloaded that from the library and then I'll buy the other book. What's our time frame?

message 44: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments I am going to go to Amazon after I send this and look into Sweetness and as soon as I finish Spirit road I will start it.

thanks
Very excited about this first book read of mine too!

message 45: by Future (new)

Future Cat Lady (future-cat-lady) | 30 comments Mod
Super excited!!!

For this first round, we'll break the discussion up by every few chapters (anyone can start these discussions) to prevent spoilers. Everyone can go at their own pace.

After this first one we'll have a better idea of the pace of the group and can set more specific deadlines?

message 46: by Riding (new)

Riding WY Wind (ridinginthewywind) | 26 comments ok just bought sweetness :) and am 55% on my kindle on Death on the spirit road. so I am ready and yes excited

message 47: by Angela (new)

Angela (wildkitties) | 28 comments Just started Sweetness, so far an easy read. I'm ready to chat about it whenever anyone else is.

message 48: by Amy (new)

Amy (amyk) I'm done with Sweetness, if anyone is ready to discuss.

message 49: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Murray | 12 comments I am having a hard time getting time this week to read so I am not done yet with the book, but this is my first group read/book club experience and I am unsure of the next step. Does everyone have to be done to discuss? I don't want to hold anyone up, and wouldn't mind if a discussion started while I am still reading. I hope to have it done by the end of the week.

message 50: by Cactus (new)

Cactus | 20 comments I just purchased and started the book yesterday. If most others are finished go ahead and I will try to catch up.
