1. Automatically discuss Josh's new books/stories within a week or so of publication, not in the Book of the Month section, but in Josh's Story Discussion page; and
2. As a general rule (but subject to decision each month), if the new book is a short story or novelette, we discuss an additional book for the Book of the Month; if it's a novella or novel (I arbitrarily draw the line at 25,000 words or about 100 pages), we don't have a separate BOM that month.

That does look interesting.
I was going to renominate Eleventh Hour by Elin Gregory. After rereading the description, I got all excited again and bought it. Lol.

Hi all!
I have two announcements to discuss. First up is our year long reading challenge. For 2016 it was the Peter Grant Rivers of London series. That challenge will end at the end of January. Please feel free to keep reading the books and commenting in the forums for those books! Especially because The Hanging Tree doesn't release until January 21 in the states, unless you've ordered it from the UK as I did. (I'll be starting it soon!)
My question is this: do we want to have a new series reading challenge for 2017? We can certainly skip a year or a few months or whatever, if you want. We don't even have to pick a title asap. If we do a new challenge, though, I'm liking the idea of sticking with the vintage gay mysteries like we've done in the past, even though Rivers of London has been a fantastic read. Thoughts?
My next topic is our February BOM. As far as I know, Josh does not have a new book coming out until toward the end of February/start of March. Do we want to read something else for February? And if so, you are all more than welcome to start nominating books if enough people agree to it.
That's all folks!

Re: the challenge. I think there were thoughts about an All's Fair challenge throughout February so that we could start well prepared into March when Fair Chance will come out. So maybe a new challenge (should there be one) shouldn't start before March/April.

About the year long reading challenges: The Adrien English series challenge has been such wonderful, lively discussion... I suggest that instead of a new year long challenge we'd have at least a couple of JL series challenges this year. We're planning to have such challenge for Josh's All's Fair series (Fair Game, Fair Play and Fair Chance) in February and March (details of that will be announced soon). And later on this year we could tackle one or two other Lanyon series. How would you guys feel about that?
But, if you guys feel that in addition to our BOM books and JL series challenges you still have time to read and discuss a longer challenge, of course we can organize also that. It just seems that the year long challenge we have going on right now hasn't been very popular. So maybe a little break from such a long challenge might be in order?

At the moment I feel challenged by challenges ;-), so I'll just get along with what you decide.

I think that's a great idea, Johanna. I only wrote a little bit in the AE challenge, but I loved reading everybody's thoughts, especially when I was also re-reading the books so that everything was fresh in my mind. And it made So This Is Christmas THAT much more pleasurable to read.
I want to re-read more of Josh's books than I have, but I have a hard time committing myself to it when I have other new books to read. But with others re-reading and commenting, it is a great incentive. And the re-read and discussions remind me WHY the JL books are some of my alltime favorites.

I look forward to an All's Fair review in February/March. I sort of missed the AE review because I had taken it upon myself to reread the series a few months earlier - too long to join in the discussions but not long enough to reread them again.
Great thoughts guys! Also, Palm meet Forehead. I'd forgotten, after a conversation only a few days ago, about the Alls Fair reread in February. Oiy, Brain, wake up! Lol.
I love the idea of spending the rest of the year rereading Josh's work rather than adding another long series challenge, so unless there's a large majority who have yet to speak up that feel differently, I bang the gavel on that whole thing. :-D
February will be Alls Fair, rather than a regular BOM.

It's that time again. We're taking book nominations for July's BOM. If a book is seconded by another member it gets put in a poll for everyone to vote on.
Let's take nominations through the 24th, and then we'll have the poll until the 28th, if that works for everyone.
Happy nominating!

I'm going to nominate Muscling Through, since that's been recommended to me as a must read very recently.

You can definitely second more than one book, I think. Also, you can nominate novellas. Muscling Through is a novella, if I remember correctly.
And, I want to read His Quiet Agent! Whoooo! Good choice!

I'll second Antonella's suggestion Call Me by Your Name because I've had it as print book for years and I still haven't managed to start it. I even had it with me in California and Catalina in March, but didn't have time to even open it!

So I know it's early yet, but I want to post this idea before I forget. For next year, 2018, I thought we could start up our year-long reading challenge again and that we could do it with the Phillip Marlowe series. It's a ground breaking classic noir mystery (first pubbed in 1939), with only nine titles that are still widely published today. Plus, Josh's new dog got named Marlowe, so why not, right?
Here are the book titles in the series:
The Big Sleep
Farewell, My Lovely
The High Window
The Lady in the Lake
The Little Sister
The Simple Art of Murder
The Long Goodbye
Playback
Poodle Springs (This was completed by Robert Parker after Chandler's death.)
I've also been told that the audiobooks are good, according to Johanna, and The Big Sleep was also a movie featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Baccall: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038355/?...
What do you guys think? Does this sound like something you'd want to do for 2018?

I think this is a wonderful idea, Jordan! I'm definitely in. And yes, I really, really liked all the Phillip Marlowe audio books narrated by Ray Porter.
Also, I thought I'd already read them all, but now I realize (thanks to your list!) that I haven't yet read Poodle Springs. Woo hoo!

I know, I almost didn't include Poodle because the cover is all wrong and it's got Parker's name on it. I had to do a bit of research to discover that Chandler did start the book before his death and Parker finished it later.

Thank you for including it. I had no idea such book even existed, let alone that it was finished by Parker. Now I'm really looking forward to reading it!

But I'm finishing Bitter Legacy this evening.
ETA; Of course I would agree to read it as a BoM.
