 Thanks for that link. However, the one I read was in the Reader's Digest magazine, and there's little or no correlation between condensed novels in the magazine and ones published as Reader's Digest Condensed Books. For example, Lucy: The Beginnings of Humankind was condensed in the magazine in 1981 or so, but not published as a Condensed Book.

     I see indication of an article in Reader's Digest vol 119 (August 1981) titled "Call Sign: Bat-21", written by a William C. Anderson.

All I remember is bits from the viewpoint of the downed man. --His astonishment at being told he will have to walk out of where he is. The pacing out of golf courses. Some detail about an air-dropped mine called matchbox [or gravel?--I'm not sure]. Getting water from a banana tree ("The next one has a [snack bar? clubhouse?].").
