Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I don't care for the CA books as much as the DF but I do like them. I'm up to Princeps' Fury.

Louise | 66 comments I just finished Death Masks, and I have the next books waiting except Ghost Story.

I love the way Dresden makes spells and potions, the invisibility potion, where he added elevator music in one of the first books was great.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments I just finished the first Dresden book and it's hooked me big time on this series. I love Harry! And, Bob! I hope there's more of him in the next books, too.

I've also read the first of the Codex Alera series and enjoyed it as well.

More Bob than you can handle.

Haha! Very true. If I'm not mistaken, Bob is in every single book so far.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Ya know, that's one thing they did for the TV series that I really liked.

More Dresden book always a good thing...

message 63: by Tracy (new)

Tracy You guys really got me hooked on these books so I went to the library to get the next one and they would NOT let me have it. The librarian said it had water damage and they were not going to put it back in circulation! I told them there wasn't another one so they are going to order one but that takes forever! :(

message 64: by Traci (new)

Traci That doesn't make any sense. They probably just threw the book away. If you wanted it you should have been able to just take it. I know it's probably because of rules and laws. But still,...

I'm reading the fourth one now, Summer Knight.

message 65: by Tracy (new)

Tracy That is the one I am on Traci! I was so frustrated with the whole situation! I asked if I could take it anyway but then I was afraid they would make me pay for it when I turned it in because of the damage. Most of Butcher's books are older and falling apart, at my library, so I hope they know I will be requesting that they order the rest of the series if they take them off the shelves. I was so missing Harry!!!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Do you have access to interlibrary loan? Most libraries do and it can give access to books from all over the country.

message 67: by Traci (new)

Traci :( I'm sorry but Summer Knight was my favorite so far. You'll love it when you get to it. Hopefully sooner than later.

message 68: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I have heard of that but I am not sure what it is exactly. Do you get books on loan from other libraries? Do you just go to another library and present your library card? How does that work?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Ask your librarian. It's handled through the library. The other library loans the book to your library. Here I get the book and it has a paper label wrapped around the front cover with interlibrary loan and the date it's due, don't know if all handle it that way.

I note you're in La Vergne, I'm in Nashville (we're almost in shouting distance). If your county has more than one branch call the main. I would assume they have interlibrary loan to.

I've only read the first book so far in the Codex Alera series, but I enjoyed it quite a lot. I have to admit, though, that I'm really hooked on Harry Dresden after reading the first book in that series!

message 74: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 261 comments Dresden is awesome. I still have the two latest to read.

message 75: by Terry (new)

Terry Simpson | 261 comments I enjoyed Codex Alera, James. It's not Dresden, not as good, witty or gritty but it's still enjoyable. My review of Princeps Fury is here. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Hmm, don't know much about Pokemon, so can't really comment. But really liked Furies of Calderon and just started on Academ's Fury and feels like it is going to be even better.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'm ready for Princeps' Fury, have it on my shelf...but still haven't gotten to it.

Mach | 572 comments I am reading Storm Front now and really loving it, i regret waiting this long before starting. i have read 2/3 of the book now.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments The series gets better as it goes. It seems (to me) to take a real jump around the 4th volume.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments Mach wrote: "I am reading Storm Front now and really loving it, i regret waiting this long before starting. i have read 2/3 of the book now."

I'm the same, Mach. I never even looked at or knew about this series until seeing discussions about it here on Goodreads. Boy, was I missing out on something pretty awesome! But, fortunately, I have corrected this oversight and am now a full-fledged Harry Dresden fan.

message 82: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I finished the book now i gave it a solid 4 stars and will definetely continue. I love that scene in the end of Storm Front (view spoiler)

Hi,

I also watched the tv show, but was disappointed. However, there is news of HBO or Showtime picking this up and redoing it with money. We may get a better show sometime.

Hi,

I noticed a copy of Storm Front in the bookswap section of this website. I have received a few books I wanted, all it costs is the shipping.

message 86: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Hi Jen, I won a book from them but never received it. Is there something you are suppose to do to receive it?

Jenn | 3 comments Tracy wrote: "Hi Jen, I won a book from them but never received it. Is there something you are suppose to do to receive it?"

Hi,

You paid shipping for a book that was in the bookswap section of this website? You are getting it from an individual and they usually update on bookswap where in the process it is.
It is different if you won the book in one of the giveaways.
If bookswap, go back to the page. You should see you paid shipping for it and be able to communicate with the other member. You should also be able to see if a charge went through on what ever you used to pay shipping. I did say I wanted one in bookswap, but the person pulled the book about a week later. So even though I agreed to pay shipping, I was never charged and the book was no longer listed. I have also paid shipping for a few other books and got great copies, one was even an advanced reader. I like those (smile).

If Giveaway, then when you go to giveaways you can see the ones you have won. There is a link that says you have received it and another that says you did not. Click one and you will hear from one of the moderators.

Hope this helps,
Jenn

Tom Kepler | 55 comments I think it interesting that many of Butcher's ebooks go for 10-15 dollars when you can buy the paper book for about 5 dollars, including shipping. Go figure that one.

I haven't read any of the Codex Alera series yet but Jim Butcher said that Pokemon is one of the two ideas behind the CA series in this interview. Spoiler warning, if you haven't read Changes you might want to skip the first 3 minutes of the interview.

All right, Tracy! That's awesome!:)

message 92: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I had to put off Butcher for a while because I started reading Ketchum' The Girl Next Door. This is kind of reminding me of A Child Called It. The only thing is that one is a true story.

message 93: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I'm a Dresden Virgin, go easy withe me please. Just started Stormfront. I'm enjoying it though.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

They get better as the series progresses too.

message 95: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Okay, I've got some of the Dresden Book (#1) under my belt and I really like Dresden. Not so much for his sense of humor (which I like) but because he's very human and fallible, not some Merlin type who always has the answers.

Plus, it's a good old fashioned detective story with an arcane side. I like that too. (I wonder, did Forever Knight (the TV show) come before the first Dresden book or after? ... I call on the great Canuk to answer?)

message 96: by Tom (new)

Tom Kepler | 55 comments The Dresden books are highly readable. Not head-scratchers but very entertaining.

The series gets so much better. But what you wrote is one of the main reasons I love the series. Dresden is fallable and there are true costs to his power and the use of it. Nothing comes easy for Harry. :)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Ys, Regina, I find him very easy to identify with (rather than compare away from).

message 99: by atmatos (new)

atmatos I cant wait for the new Dresden Files, I love the series. I need to give the Codex series another try, I heard the first one was a trunk novel and the series picks up in book two.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I like the Codex series, just not nearly as much as Dresden.

Hugh, the second book Fool Moon is good and you pick up more little details that tie into a larger over all story, but the books get measurably (in my opinion anyway) better starting in book 3 or 4. Considering I gave all the books 5 star ratings you get an idea of how much I like this series.
