THE PLAYER OF GAMES: favorite/least favorite characters (*spoilers possible*)

What were your favorite (and/or least favorite) characters in The Player of Games?

And - what did you think of Gurgeh? (I ask specifically about him because I enjoyed that character so much, I used that name in an online strategy game for a while!)

I liked Gurgeh and found it fascinating how he changed through the story, but we don't really get close to him. We don't really understand his motives for going to the Empire (at least I didn't), or what made him such a phenomenal game-player, although Flere-Imsaho's / Mawhrin-Ske's explanation near the end is helpful in understanding how he could play Azad so expertly with only 2 years instruction.

My favorite character was Chamlis--a power behind the scenes, I think.
