SP11 General Questions & Answers
One of the things I noticed about Karen's task is that it makes Sam's task doubly difficult. For Sam's task, you must have a book that does not fit any other 10- or 20-point task. So I made sure that the book I'm reading for Sam's task doesn't have a vowel. ;-)
Rachelccameron wrote: "For 10.8 are we to use only the books on the page that comes up or the full list found on the Excel spreadsheet?"Excel spreadsheet? Where do you see that? I'd love to be able to import a link to it, or download a copy of it. Thanks! -Krista
I was going to read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami for Sam's task because I'm assuming the -up part of the title doesn't count in Karen's Scrabble task (meaning wind-up is used as one word, not two). So the letters would be TWBCHM, which you can't make a word out of, hence using it for Sam's task. Am I correct in thinking this, or do I need to pick a different book? Thanks!

Yeah, I didn't find a spreadsheet either. But this made me look around so that I realized the list is much longer than the 75 titles on the front page.

If you look on the right hand side (beige) close to the top, directly under the announcement of "75 New Popular Penguins Out Now".. the link should be right there. Its fairly small.
Hope these directions help! :)
I didn't realize the true size of the list at first either. Now I have a spot for Jane Eyre! The diversity of the list is great.
Cait wrote: "I didn't realize the true size of the list at first either. Now I have a spot for Jane Eyre! The diversity of the list is great."Watch out that UK Penguins are mixed in with the AUS Penguins. I'm guessing we can't use the UK ones, right?
BTW I thought there would be more Aussie authors. I have a Penguin Paperback by a prize-winning Aussie author I've had for a while to read. He just was just an Un-Popular Penguin. (smile)

Aw crap. I better go and check again... Thanks for the heads up.

I'm wishing I'd suggested a four letter word requirement instead of three, but Elizabeth's suggestion of finding a book with all consonants is a good one. One book I wanted to use for Sam's task is The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse, but not only does it make a word, but it makes the word "poems" so it might end up being the one I use for my task!
Also, Sam, I have one other question about your task. Since 10.1 asks us to repeat our favorite task from the last challenge, do we have to exclude whatever task we choose? For example, I was thinking of using the one-word title task as my favorite from last time, but I was also considering a one word title book for your task. How does that 10.1 task influence our choice for your task?
For Sam's task, I'm using Mini Shopaholic. I can't seem to fit it into any category hence why its been sitting on my TBR for so long and with M,S,S,K, there are no words to be formed from those letters.I'm actually kind of bummed that we can't repeat the Scrabble task. I've found a few books that I can use to make words out of and can't decide which one to use for it.
Actually, Karen, I think your scrabble task enhances Sam's task. His is a 20-pointer, and worded somewhat like the old square-peg task we used to have that was just a 10-pointer. We ought to have to work harder for 20 points and you made it so!

I think going back and making sure a book doesn't fit all of last season's challenges is a bit much. I'm reading a Booker winner for 10.1, so I'd be meeting the criteria as long I didn't read anothing Booker winner for 20.10.
Sam wrote: "Karen GHHS wrote: "Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "One of the things I noticed about Karen's task is that it makes Sam's task doubly difficult. No one sees this as fitting in any of this season's tasks, right?

Sam wrote: "Karen GHHS wrote: "Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "One of the things I noticed about Karen's task is that it makes Sam's task doubly difficult. For Sam's task, you must have a book that does not fit any..."Thanks, Sam. Now I think I'm ready to make my final decisions!
Maybe we could ask Sam nicely if he'd consider adjusting his Task so that Karen's task could be excluded from his list of tasks his task book can't work for? (Boy, I don't think I was very straightfoward with that sentence. Hopefully folks can understand it.)Instead of Sam's current task wording of:
..."but only if it doesn't fit any of the other Reading with Style 10 or 20-point tasks."
Maybe, it could be changed to:
...but only if it doesn't fit any of the other Reading with Style 10 or 20-point tasks except tasks 10.1, and 10.7?
Pretty please, Sam?
I know it's kind of nervy to ask, but I've got to give it a shot.
Hi. I'm new and excited to get started. I've got a couple of questions that I couldn't find answers too. I did read the Rules & Guidelines but am still a little confused.
Regarding the Style Points..
Can they be award to only one task or to any and all?
Do they apply to the Spring Cleaning or are only the two 5pt bonuses listed applicable?
Also, at he end of the style guidelines it says - "2. Mega Finish (200 points): Complete all Reading with Style tasks and Reading through Time tasks" and the Rules & Guidelines also mention Reading through time.
Is that open or is Spring Cleaning this season's "Reading through Time?"
Also, I'm a Heather & I know there is more than one. Is there a Readerboard signup, or someplace that I need to put a name to help avoid confusion?
Thanks for the help. -Heather
Hello Heather, welcome to our group. I am not a mod but I will try to answer your questions. The mods do have the final say though. The easiest one to answer is there is no readerboard sign up. If there is a person with the same name as you, most people add the first letter to their last name for example I would put Jayme H or since there was more than one Jayme in one of my groups, I added the ghost reader after my name. You can go into your profile and change it when it asks for your username.
2) Reading Through Time was our mini challenge for last challenge. This mini challenge is called Spring Cleaning.
3) Style Points
Both RWS and Spring Cleaning have their own style points. The Reaing With Style style points are the combo, series, Oldies and those can be added on to any task that fits unless it is specifically excluded.
The Spring Cleaning challenge has its own bonus points. Reading With Style bonus points can not be claimed for Spring Cleaning and vice versa.
4)As for the Mega finish points, if you finish all the Reading With Style tasks and the Spring Cleaning tasks, you will get an extra 200 points added to your score.
I hope I was able to answer all your questions. It can be confusing but we are all here to help new members. This is my third or fourth RWS challenge and it is really fun. Also, you can do tasks as many times as you want unless it is specifically stated and you have the opportunity of earning big points. Top 3 winners get to design their own tasks for the next challenge so there is some incentive. Welcome to the group.
The Style Points are for every task except the 15-point Spring Cleaning Tasks. The combo points are cumulative, so if you find a book that could be used for your task PLUS 1, 2, or more tasks, you get the 5-point bonus for each extra task to which it could apply. And you can use as many style points as you can find for any book that you read. The more the better, and is what sets this challenge apart from others!Reading Through Time was the group of 15-point tasks we did a couple of challenges back, so the Mega Finish this time would be for all the RwS tasks plus the Spring Cleaning Tasks.
There is not a Readerboard signup - if you want to help Krista, you can identify yourself a bit differently. (It's why I added the Alaska to my name.)

I learned speed peck and find typing method. You can do too just by ordering my tutorial DVD for only 19.99 plus 4.99 shipping and handling. :)
LOL, I can type about 80 wpm, learned in high school nearly 50 years ago. It's the brain that doesn't work as quickly as you young'uns.
Sam wrote: "All of the 174 books on the Popular Penguin website are eligible for Coralie's task."Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "which ones are the Aussie Penguins?"
Great news! I was kind of bummed out to see how few had AUS with the title.
Task 10.1 (pick your favorite task from last challenge) says that it can be completed only once, but it doesn't mention anything about combo points. Probably not allowed though, right?
Cait wrote: "Task 10.1 (pick your favorite task from last challenge) says that it can be completed only once, but it doesn't mention anything about combo points. You can use combo points for the book you read for 10.1, but you cannot use 10.1 as a combo for any other task.
I am a bit confused by 10.1 in that I don't know what is meant by task cannot be repeated. Can somebody explain?
Melissa, most of the Reading with Style tasks can be done as many times as you want. This time, 10.1, 10.7, and 20.10 are tasks that can be completed only once. The rest of the 10- and 20-point tasks can be completed as many times as you want. The 15-point tasks can be repeated, but only after completing all 10 15-point tasks.
I am reading The Complete Poems of Emily Jane Brontë.The actual book was published in 1995. However, the poems within were all written between 1836-1846.
Am I correct in assuming that I can use the 1836 date when claiming Oldies points?
I thought I already asked this question but I can't find where I did. I guess you know I suffer from a genetic form of memory deficent disorder (MDD). It usually shows up in my family once one begins having children and there seems to be no cure!Does The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks count for Lab Lit?
I am confused by 10.1. My main question is that for the task I wish to do 10.8 from the winter challenge and I am wondering if that I do 10.8 from the winter challenge is whether I will be able to do 10.8 from this challenge.

Hmmmm --- it can be set in the same land as the current country I suppose. If you want to go to the trouble to figure that out, then you deserve to use it for your task. :-)
Just explain how the country in the book relates to the modern day country when you post your points.
