Esther (eshchory) I have just finished Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese Cutting for Stone which wasn't as impressive as it should have been given the fantastic reviews it received.
Now I am reading Ties That Bind, Ties That Break by Lensey Namioka Ties That Bind, Ties That Break. It is supposed to be a teen book but going by the young style of writing I'd say it was more suited to middle-grade. Either way I am enjoying it. I love anything about China and I love the characters.

TAMMY CUEVAS (tammy1965) Finished Raising Cubby A Father and Son's Adventures with Asperger's, Trains, Tractors, and High Explosives by John Elder Robison yesterday, now I need to get that review written. 5 stars, BTW. This morning, I found A Promise for Miriam by Vannetta Chapman in my review pile. I won it last year from FirstReads, and it got mixed in with review copies and I forgot about it. I'm so embarrassed. I'm reading it now, and hope to have the review posted in a few days.

Belinda Lancaster (belindalancaster) | 1 comments A Sealed Fate
A Sealed Fate by Lisa Gordon

Just wanted to pop by and recommend A Sealed Fate - was a pleasure to read a thriller which is not cop/detective based. A very original book from an author who does not rely on mechanisms and the usual thriller gimmicks.

'A Sealed Fate' is not my usual kind of read and so I didn't expect much, but I was surprised to be hooked from the first chapter and devoured the whole book in one sitting!

I was impressed by the tightly plotted structure, unusual in a first novel, and even at the most shocking moment, everything still made sense. I have to be careful not to spoil the plot for other readers, but although I was completely surprised by the action of one character, I didn't have any trouble believing the event... the character was so fully rounded, and described so well in earlier chapters. I wonder if I would have been so shocked if a male character in a similar situation had done the same thing. Probably not, so I learned something about myself there!

Although the themes of the book are serious, Ms Gordon has a light touch and a rich vein of humour runs throughout. I laughed out loud on the train more than once. The story is thoroughly modern, but spiritual themes are woven into the plot and the motivations of the characters with a deft hand: a reader without an interest in these subjects would not be bored, but a reader with some knowledge might notice the cleverness of many little details in the writing... extra fun for me!

But the best thing about this book is the characters. The author understands so well how people hang together, how one thing in life relates to another, and how we tend to act in line with our personalities, no matter how perverse this may occasionally be! A real warmth shines through the writing... this author really cares about these characters and I really fell in love with the two main ones! I had a bit of a crush on the love interest too!

My one regret is that we did not get to find out more about Larissa's life beforehand, and I would love to know what happened next. I do hope that the author is planning a sequel, or even a prequel!

Leonard (leonardseet) | 1 comments The Prague Cemetery by Umberto Eco

I read The Name of the Rose and had high expectations and Umberto Eco didn't disappoint. He's able to integrate historical events into the story so I almost could believe the protagonist (antagonist) actually contributed to the events.

Chris Ward (chriswardfictionwriter) | 5 comments After finishing the Hunger Games trilogy this week (HG - great, CF - not bad, MJ - hmmm...), I've started reading a book called The Passage by Justin Cronin. It's very, very good. The Hunger Games wasn't really my thing because at 34 I'm not really interested in YA fiction, but this is right up my street. Dark, deep, and very well written.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Jeshu wrote: "that's a lot of books, Fiona!"

Lol, I started Name and Number on 12/2/13 (that a friend recommended) and then thought I needed a escape book, so chose Head Over Heels which I started and life got in the way for a few days lol. So I finished both books in 2 days and now I've gone for Bad Blood: A Vampire Thriller which I had on my Kindle since 31/12/11 and had originally started last year lol x
