Olga Godim (olgagodim) | 51 comments I'm reading The Night Circus. So far, I'm not impressed. I'm on page 69, and the story hasn't started yet. There is no emotional involvement, neither by the author nor by the reader. I can only guess who is going to be the protagonist(s), because the POV jumps erratically. It seems that the story should be beautiful and tantalizing... when it starts. I'm not sure I'll read so long. But to give it its due, the language is amazing and the cover lovely. It's clearly a literary novel, which for some reason uses fantasy as a prop. Perhaps I'm missing a point? I know many people like it. I'll try to muddle through.
For now, to give myself a respite from literary, I started to re-read (for the umpteenth time) one of Jayne Ann Krentz's novels, Family Man. I love her books, especially the ones written between 1990 and 2007. They are invariable good, easy read. I know what it's about and how it will end, and I still enjoy it.

Sam (sam222) I'm reading Don't Tell (Romantic Suspense #1) by Karen Rose . One of the charters really pisses me off, he abused his wife and abuses his girlfriend. I'm looking for a way to get into the book to punch him in the face, so far all attempts have failed. LOL

Oh, yeah! Many of my stories start the same way: I want to get into the book and 'fix' things. I want the protagonist's abusive personality to be a mask of vulnerability or a secondary character to acquire a magical lipstick. I often think: what if it didn't go the way the author pointed but in the opposite direction.

Read it years ago. From my recollection, it was a good diary read.

We definitely do! Other things should be able to sort themselves rather than requiring being done and infringing on precious reading time!!

message 1416: by Teneal (new)

Teneal I'm currently reading On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher and Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger .

So far I'm not really enjoying On Chesil Beach. I don't know how it got nominated for a Booker Prize. And I'm loving the other two.

message 1421: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Dracula by Bram Stoker - rereading and loving it!! Also, how did I enjoy this, unabridged, when I was 12? I musta been a right anti-social recluse!

Found out I can read books on e-readers when I'm on the train - this is new to me and boy did I make the most of it this weekend, I only started this book on the train up Friday :D

message 1422: by [deleted user] (new)

I decided it was time to read The Iron Daughter as I read in the first in the series ages ago.

The MC started getting on my nerves almost immediately. I didn't recall her being so annoying in the first book - I'm sure I wouldn't have put it on my series-to-be-followed shelf if she was. Mind you, I have read an awful lot of YA PNR since then so my tolerance for whiny heroines might be significantly lower... Anyway, I'm persevering and at least the pace is starting to pick up now. :)

I love it! Just a warning tho', it does all come across through letters and diary entries, but you do start to forget that pretty quickly.

message 1435: by Varian Rose (new)

Varian Rose I'm currently reading Winter by Keven Newsome . Seeing that this is "Christian fiction" I'm a little nervouse. I hope he shows the Gothic subculture in a posititve light instead of something inheritently evil.

I really enjoyed that one and I just finished I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella which was fun too - practically spent all of yesterday reading it!

Moving on to The Iron Knight (Iron Fey, #4) by Julie Kagawa tonight to finish off that series. Though I haven't read the two novellas Winter's Passage or Summer's Crossing but from comments I've seen they are just filler stories and not vital to the series as a whole...
