Dracula didn't burn. He wasn't a fan of the sunlight, but he didn't burn.

The HUGE difference is Anne Rice is a great story teller. She can get away with emo/goth vamps. Meyer's shiny vamps just plain suck!! I don't know who told this woman she can write ....

Pretty sure that it was witches with the OCD, but a lot of folklore tended to cram the two together.

Dan (dan2345) | 35 comments I don't think Stephanie Meyer actually knows anything about the vampire myths. Dracula by Bram Stoker

Abby (toxicsunshine) | 150 comments I honestly have no problem with Stephenie Meyer creating her own fictional creature for her novels, but she shouldn't call them vampires. If she'd simply called them something different, I'm sure a lot more people would see eye to eye with her. But that's just the problem. All these modern YA authors have turned the vampire, which used to be an interesting, macabre creature, into angsty teenagers who drink animal blood and go to high school. And that's really sad.

I guess we could pin the blame on Anne Rice, although I do enjoy her novels. Before the 70's, the vampire was always an antagonist, the villain the hero or heroine sought to destroy. Rice was the first to make them protagonists instead. However, although she made the vampire a more relatable character, they weren't completely likable (Lestat and the rest of her vampire cast drank human blood every night, and they killed when they fed). And they certainly weren't the love-sick high school vampires we see so often in literature today. Rice knocked over the first domino, you could say.

I agree, if Stephanie Meyer had not called whatever the hell her creatures are supposed to be, "vampires",there would be no problem. Her vampires(ahem...sorry but thats what people call those things she made up) are not vampires at all, they're more like Peter Pan wannabes with a blood fetish or something.

I've heard people hate on Anne Rice before. I've read the first three novels in Rice's vampire chronicles, and I can see why people would not like her, but her version of the vampire is not at all as rediculous as what Meyer has done. Atleast Anne Rice knew something about vampires, I don't think Meyer has even seen a vampire movie or read a real vampire book.

And I miss the old days, what you were talking about, where the vampire was the villain that was Evil and had to be destroyed. Thats why I like Stoker's Dracula so much. And there are a few more recent vampire stories where vampires are the antagonist; I liked "Vampire$" by John Steakley and "The Light At The End" by John Skipp and Craig Spector. Now those two books are stories about evil, murderous, bloodsuckers that deserve a stake through the heart!

For some reason, it kind of irks me when a main character is too likable. If they rescue stray animals, have no regrets about anything they've done and always act as the peacemaker, I get downright annoyed. I enjoy reading about anti-heroes, the average guy who might be doing something wrong for the right reason, or vice versa. The vampire, in its early stages after Rice's Vampire Chronicles, was just that.

Dan (dan2345) | 35 comments I realize it's been a while since anyones commented on this topic, but last we were talking we were discussing Anne Rice. Well, Heres what she had to say about The Twilight Saga back in October on her facebook page....

"Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town ---- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."

And in 2009 she said this in an intreview...

"It's based on a really silly premise: that immortals would go to high school. It's a failure of imagination, but at the same time, that silly premise has provided Stephenie Meyer with huge success. The idea that if you are immortal you would go to high school instead of Katmandu or Paris or Venice, it’s the vampire dumbed down for kids. But it's worked. It's successful. It makes kids really happy."

LMFAO.....I love it!!!! Now, when the modern day queen of vampire literature says that your vampires are basically rediculous, theres obviously something wrong there. And, I'm sure everyone here already knows what Stephen King has had to say about Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight Saga. LOL! I wish more famous authors would come out and bash on Twilight!

My theory about Twilight is that it was one of the many, many fanfictions in the world that somehow happened to be published and labeled as a novel, although we all know at heart it is still a sad little fan fiction written by a lonley soccer mom with some seriously strange attractions. Especially to how good edward's breath is. Yuck.

I'd stay away from anything that is as sparkly as a middle schooler's Blingee.

think of this fella:

how could you possibly know the taste of the food if you don't try it? then logically.... you CANNOT MAKE A REVIEW OF A BOOK NOT UNLESS YOU READ IT. you're no a BOOK CRITIC and REVIEWER if you just hated it based on what you have heard, read or seen. so what's with the dilemma of a question that says," if you hated TWILIGHT why bother reading it?" of course- you can't love or hate it if you don't READ. common sense,eh?

-_-
