While Listening to an Audio...

Commute. I always mean to listen while cleaning house, but I'm too easily distracted by TV and internet. I've got to crack down though to keep up with my Challenge books.
I can't surf and listen; I end up tuning out one or the other.
I usually listen to books while cooking, eating, and sewing. I would do more if my iphone wasn't so bulky to carry around or if the tasks needed to be done were quieter....
@MaryK - Well, I find if I actually start reading stuff I do pause my audio book. However, when I'm posting I do find that I still have issues. So, maybe I'm just BLAMING an audio book... ;)@Lynleigh - wow you think your iPhone is bulky? I usually carry around my 160 GB iPod Classic. I'm not that bothered by it and love have MANY options to re-listen to books no matter what I'm doing!
I also listen while crafting (thanks Lyn for bringing up sewing - tho I do other crafts)
I mainly listen when I'm going to sleep at night. Which has it's drawbacks, of course. I also listen (when I remember) when I'm cooking or cleaning, which is rare , and when I'm quilting. In particular I listen to the books I'm less interested in when I'm sewing. If I really want to concentrate I wait till I go to bed. Oh, and I do occasionally listen in the car, which I like.
I knit, among other things. And I use a bluetooth headset so I don't knit my cord into my project. I was inspired to get it by my sister who has twice lopped her earphone cord while gardening. She still uses wired earphones however.
I do most of my listening at work. The Pod is either laying on my desk or in my pocket. :) I listen while at home very rarely as it tends to put me to sleep. Sooo, I usually hook the Pod up to my portable speaker system (also charger)and listen as I fall asleep. It also has a sleep timer. If I fall asleep before it shuts off then I will rewind back to where it was when I went to sleep. :)
@Vic - I used to have a Nano 1st gen so the size difference was huge. ;oD The phone is too big for any of my pockets and hangs from a lanyard around my neck. It's heavy! Brilliant piece of tech but heavy.I need to invest in wireless headphones....
I listen in the car and while doing ranch chores on the weekends...makes cleaning stalls go by faster ;-)
I listen while I exercise, while I garden, and best of all, when I'm painting (walls). Everyone has cleared out for that and I get left alone for hours on end LOL.
I listen while I drive. Instead of turning on the radio, I used audiobooks to keep me company. I know I'm addicted to audiobooks, when I'm looking for excuses to go somewhere, or drive around the block just to finish a chapter. :)
I started listening to audiobooks because it's a long drive to just about anywhere from where I live. But once hooked I've joined the ranks of those who listen while cleaning house, cooking, working outside, doing basic data entry at the computer, etc.
I have a clip on case for my iPod Classic. The clip is so tight that it holds securely to the waistband of whatever I'm wearing.
Having the player anchored at waist level allows for quick one touch pausing when real life dares to interrupt my listening. :)
I listen anytime I am not actually doing something I HAVE to think about or have to carry on a conversation. While I am gardening, driving, shopping, walking, doing the dishes even vacuuming (if I turn it up loud enough!)
In fact my DH always makes that "pulling out you earbud " signal when he wants to talk to me now as I always have to get him to repeat himself.
The short answer is just about everything. My roommate actually is amazed that i walk around the house with my ipod nano clipped to my shirt and my earphones in. I listen to books in lieu of tv and radio while in the car. My newfound task while listening to audiobooks is running. I am training for a marathon and am amazed how easily i can get lost in an audiobook and nearly forget i am running.
People ask me if I have heard the new song by Such-and such and I have to admit I have not listened to music on the radio for almost a year as it would take away my audiobook time.

Same here! I'll hear a song on say a TV show and comment on it and DH will tell me that was played out on the radio. Of course, he does this a lot less now that I've infected HIM with the audiobook addiction as well and make sure I have multiple ABs on his iPod to listen to. I used to be so current with music, not so much any more. :)
I'll usually listen to audiobooks first thing in the morning while I get ready for work or during my commute. Sometimes I listen to an audiobook while I'm reading another book. LOL

It's the same with me. My ipod is crammed full of books...why would I listen to music?? :) It is a little embarassing at times, though.
I also listen to books when the activity doesn't involve too much thought. Cleaning, driving, working (I design/make jewelry) and sometimes even at bedtime- especially if I'm in a hotel.
I'm an addict. AND I might be getting a smidge too particular as I get older...some narrators actually get me all worked up when they are mutilating a book!! Can't they hear themselves when they speak? Do they not realize that normal humans don't actually sound like that or use inflection at the end of every sentence? lol Okay...I'll quit ranting. :)
I prefer to think I've become an audio book connoisseur! :) It has nothing to do with age, it's all about experience. While I used to be happy to find any of my favorites in audio, I now cringe at some that I've collected and wonder what I was thinking?
My sister keeps sending me YouTube links of her favorite new music. Out of familial duty I listen to them, but having to pause my book to do so is painful!

Lol. I wish there was a "Like" button on Goodreads! Consider this post "Liked" :)
I listen a lot in the evenings when I'm having a hard time falling asleep. I also enjoy listening when cooking or walking about town.

I listen while doing housework and evening while knitting--I feel like it is being read too--Nice to replace TV--This is all new to me--hope I can learn how it goes--Have a nice day--

My husband does this all the time. He'll get up and tell me he's apparently now done with his book but doesn't remember most of it! I try to only listen to books I've read/listened to before and that are fairly even in terms of reading cadence of narrator. :)

I set the sleep timer in 15 minute increments so i don't get too lost. If I'm not asleep in 15, I give it another 15. Some nights I do that 4 or 5 times. :)
Guys I listen to audiobooks for a quick distraction from my School work. especially my cal class. The problem s seems clear as I focus on the book. And when it come to test time/ review time it's good to listen to something other than classical/ silence music. I also listen to audiobooks on the bus, walking my dogs and even when I am cleaning. Currently I will be starting to read match if u can by sep. Sorry I haven't been keep up with my reviews but after a long day of school and house work I feeling tired.
I listen a lot at work while I'm doing routine and boring things. It's not frowned upon, as long as I pay attention when needed. I'm stuck off in a corner anyway, so it's no problem. Then at home I listen when I'm knitting, dyeing yarn, doing housework, etc. and I listen on my walks and in the car.
I read during my commute (I take the subway) but I listen when I'm walking on the streets (I've learned that reading a book while walking can be very dangerous in NYC. :) I also read while I'm exercising at the gym, when I'm doing housework, at work if I'm doing some menial tasks and in bed before going to sleep that way, I can turn down the lights and close my eyes (and no, I don't fall sleep.:)
I just recently started the listening around the house thing, and it's going very well. This weekend I found myself resenting the fact that I needed to finish reading a book when what I really wanted was to do some organizing so I could listen to my current audiobook. It bodes well for my housekeeping habits. :)And I'm now running into the problem of how to carry my ipod around. In the bra isn't going to work for me. I guess I'm going to have to make sure all my pants have pockets from now on.

Of course I also do yard work, gardening, dishes, laundry, commuting to/from work, grocery shopping, work at work, taking dog to vet, etc.
What do YOU do while listening?
