Lesley | 149 comments I am glad to see another reader interested in Neil Gaiman... I love his books

Carmin I had been meaning to read the rest of his novels for awhile, and now I have. :D Good way to start the year.

Carmin I'm starting to feel as though I've bitten off more than I can chew. 104 books is a lot.

Carmin 10. Orlando - Virginia Woolf

message 7: by Tony (new)

Tony | 52 comments I have the book sitting on my shelf for about a year or more but have yet to pick it up. How was it as compared to some of her other novels, if you've read them, Mrs. Dalloway or To the Lighthouse, etc.etc.? Is it anything like that 90's movie of the same name with Tilda Swinton?

message 8: by Carmin (new)

Carmin Nicole: I haven't read "To the Lighthouse", but I have read "Mrs. Dalloway" and "Orlando". Both books are heavy on stream of consciousness, which is what I enjoy from Woolf's writing. However, both books are kind of slow paced. I hope that helps.

Tolonye: I haven't see the 90's film version. (I'll have to keep on eye out for it.) Again, I find that her novels as a whole are just a vehicle for stream of consciousness. Reading "Orlando" and as I recall "Mrs. Dalloway" was kind of tedious. However, I do plan on reading "To the Light House".

Nicole (phaedosia) Hi Carmin,
How was "Havana Nocturne"? It sounds really interesting.

message 10: by Carmin (new)

Carmin It was great; it's nonfiction but it reads like fiction. The book is very informative too without being bias.

Carmin 11. Bitten - Kelley Armstrong

Carmin 12. Preludes and Nocturnes - Neil Gaiman

Carmin 13. Two Plays for Voices - Neil Gaiman

message 14: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (phaedosia) That's what I like. I read way more fiction than nf and find that I am drawn to nf authors who can weave the facts into a compelling story. I'm sticking it on my to-be-read list--thanks for the recommendation.

Carmin 14. Moab Is My Washpot - Stephen Fry

Carmine, you read a lot of the same stuff I do. Last year, I started out reading the Sandman graphic novels. I loved them. Have you read Good Omens yet?

Bitten is a great book, but that series gets better as it goes along, in my opinion.

I had to read Mrs. Dalloway for a class I took several years ago. It was only okay. Although I understand why it is used as a writing technique, I have a problem keeping up with Stream of Consciousness. It either bores me or annoys me. It depends on personal preference. You might really enjoy it.

Carmin I haven't read Good Omens yet. I started to read it a few weeks ago but haven't picked it up again.

I did get the impression that the Women of the Otherworld Series would get better. I wasn't blown away by Bitten. However, I'm interested enough to read the next book.

I have mixed feelings about Virginia Woolf. I want to continue to reading her works, but I'm not sure why. I don't find her novels enjoyable. But there is something in her writing that makes me want to read her. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess I feel like her style can be successful; I just haven't read the right novel. I have high hopes for To the Lighthouse.

Carmin By enjoyable, I mean I wouldn't say I read her for pleasure. But more out of the desire to familiarize myself with her works. You can't claim to have a BA in Lit and not read Woolf. Or so I gathered from my professors.
