Charity (charityross) Should we add the books from the updated list to the bookshelves for those working on both lists?

Charity (charityross) And I wanted to mention that it seems some of our books are getting deleted and new ones are springing up by GR authors that are not on either of the 1001 lists.

I have no clue what has been deleted, but we have 4 on the 'currently reading' shelf and only 995 on the other shelves...leaving 2 missing (from the original list). Trying to find the 2 that have been deleted is a bit like a 'needle in a haystack'...

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I think we should. We could tag them "2008 version" and also tag the books dropped from the 2006 version. What do you think? We could divide the list and correct any errors or omissions we find during the process.

Volunteers???????

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Charity: Not much interest in this endeavor, I guess. I wish I had the time to do it myself. Maybe I will try and start it anyway. Care to share the task?

I just finished watching the movie version of one of the new additions to the list, Eugene Onegin by Pushkin. I enjoyed it. The main character was played by Ralph Fiennes who also produced it, a serious actor indeed, so I think it adequately portrayed the mood, tone, setting and elements of the story. Fiennes does the brooding male so well! (Remember "The English Patient" and "The Constant Gardener"?)

The book is written in verse! Very unique, I'm sure. I hope to eventually find a copy somewhere but have not seen one yet.

I wish we could get some people discussing these new additions, but most here seemed still to be committed the the 2006 version....

Charity (charityross) Well, I will certainly be itching to discuss some of the books from the updated list, particularly The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and Vernon God Little which were both added and I've been dying to read them.

Eugene Onegin sounds very interesting, Judith. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a copy also.

I'm game for adding the new books to the shelves sometime later this week. There are only around 240 new books or so, right? I think I'll create a new shelf for "2008 Updates" and then we can filter them into the additional categories later.

I'm still hoping to find the couple of books from the original list that have gone missing from the shelves....grrrrrr.

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Great, Charity. As soon as you create the shelf, let me know.

After doing some analyzing of the books dropped from the list and reviewing a few of the new ones added, I think that the 2008 version may very well be a better list and worth the change of focus for at least some folks who were against so many books by the same authors on the old one!

I'll help you find the missing books from the old one as we add the new, okay?

Cheers,
Judith

Michelle (fireweaver) | 99 comments i've skimmed the changes to the list, and yeah, it does seem to be more even-tempered what with the reduction in number of works per author. i mean, do we really need ALL of jane austen on there?

that being said, i'm just not up to the task of changing lists. even though i'm less than 10% of the way in, hey, it's MY 10%, and i can't let go of the books i've read that didn't make the cut of the new list. if you do add the new list's books, can you please just make sure they're marked as "new list" or "2008 version" or whatever is most convenient?

Charity, i noticed too that we're a few books shy of 1001 on the list...maybe there needs to be an admin thread about bookshelves to take care of all these things:

1. a general shout-out to the whole membership (there are over 3000 of us!) to go looking for them? say, search for all the books by authors who's last name starts with the same letter as yours does? post back to the thread if you find the missing books?

2. same thing for anyone who has the spreadsheet for the new list, go looking for your same-letter-last-name authors and add them in to the "2008 version" shelf, then neither of you guys has to do it alone?

3. you could also change the 'currently reading' shelf to be the books that are scheduled for the upcoming monthly discussions. of course, none of this works if the shelves keep getting tweaked improperly...

Charity (charityross) I will definitely keep the books from the updated list marked as "2008 Updates"...or something to that effect. I'm working a little from both (but mainly the original), so I also would like to keep things from getting confusing.

I hope to track down the missing titles as I'm adding the updated titles. Hopefully this won't be as daunting as it looks. *cross fingers*

Great suggestions, Michelle!
