Thrift Store Book Junkie at Your Service!

Hi everyone! My name is Leah and I'm happy to be here, as who can resist a group that intros itself with references to feeling as though you're single handedly supporting the publishing companies :o) My personal addiction is the $0.25 and $0.50 shelves at the local thrift store, and I'm not sure I remember the last time they didn't offer me a box to carry my friends home in.

My favorites are historical fiction, outdoors and travel(fiction and non) and mysteries, though I will read just about anything that comes my way.

Looking forward to getting to know some new book junkies!

Yes, me too. The thrift store book shelf and the library sales are the best parts of visiting those places. My library has an ongoing sale on the honor system. You pick out your books and deposit your cash/check in the safe thingy.

Great to meet both of you as well! I lived Colorado for several years, and I dearly loved the library book sales too. Now I live 75 miles from the nearest good library, so I don't get the spoils of that as often as I used to :o(

Headed to the library to pick up some reserves. Hopefully will snag some good stuff off the sale carts/shelves.

I haven't read Revolutionary Road, but really enjoyed the movie.

I'm torn on Sophie Kinsella...like some more than others. This was a so-so for me, but still a funny and light "guilty pleasure" as I like to call them. Let me know what you think of both of them, I'll definitely have to add Revolutionary Road to my growing list of to-reads!

Will do Leah. But I honestly don't know when I'll get to them. My TBR mountain is sooo high and I never know what I'll be in the mood for next.

At the library I bought S is for Silence and checked out a ton of impromptus than I probably won't have time to read. *sigh* I just can't help myself.

Me neither! :o) The "library" in my town is basically a hand-me-down book collaboration that is only open for 4 hours, one day a week. I thought this was traumatic when I first moved here, but now it's kind of a blessing...at least when I go crazy at the thrift stores I never have to give them back! It seems like we might have some similar tastes anyway, I'll definitely look forward to seeing whichever ones you do pick next!

Nice to meet you guys! Oh how I love thrift store finds! Been haunting the shelves of my local indie used bookstore so long, I forgot what odd treasures you can find thrifting, thanks for reminding me...maybe I'll post the finds from my next trip soon!

I have not read Revolutionary Road but saw the movie. It was fantastic. Two great actors. I have Remember me on my TBR.

I love thrift stores finds. I just can't stop going every Wednesday to the half price sales where things are really cheap. I recently bought a small purse for 0.50 besides all the books I purchased that I could hardly carry. I am so excited about this group.

Hello everyone. Our town just opened a brand new library in an huge old grocery store building and its more than twice the size of the old one. Its awesome. In the old one they had friends of the library sales twice a year. In the new one they actually have a section for books they dont want anymore. Its on the honor system. The first time I went in I walked from my apartment. Only a 20 minute walk. But there were so many books! Between what I purchased and what I borrowed I could barely manage to carry them home.

Clara, I actually just finished
Revolutionary Road yesterday! I loved the writing, composition, storytelling and bravery of the subject matter for the time period, but am sad to say I didn't love it as much as I'd hoped :o( I need to get the movie next, I have a feeling it might be one of those "once in a great while's" that I enjoy a movie more than a book.

Nice work on the purse, I am a thrift store junkie for those too! It's always nice when I find a fun, decent sized one on the same day I find a ton of books to lug home....

LOL, that sounds just like me! They usually offer us(me and my boyfriend) a box for our books every time we leave the store :o) I just wish I could walk to mine...

Walking is good and bad. If I walk I get the nice fresh air and the exercise and will hopefully try to limit my self on the books that I get. Which basically most of the time I have to do since I don't have a car right now. But walking can be bad too because the last time I went I carried too many books home and ended up with sore shoulders and a sore back. But I'm just happy that the books are available. :)

I know exactly what you mean, having the car definitely makes it easier to buy way too many! Luckily the downside to having to drive there is that it's a 52 mile drive, so I don't do it too often :o)

I hear ya. And with the price of gas these days I probably wouldnt be able to use my car more than once a month.

Oh I wish! I am 5 miles down a very big hill from work...the joy of walking to work is a far-gone one these days :o( At least I can walk anywhere I need to go in town though!

That's the good thing about living where I do. Most stuff is pretty close and those that are I plan a day of it walking. Although I'm not going to enjoy the heat when it starts up.
