MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments So true!

I'm not sure how many orphan series I have hanging around on my bookshelves...

message 202: by Amelia (last edited Mar 30, 2011 12:17PM) (new)

Amelia (narknon) I've got some orphan series too. Then I obsess and 'have' to buy the first one(s).

I've been keeping a list of the books I have, but sometimes I still end up with duplicates. Not too long ago I ordered a book from Amazon and then the next time I went to the bookstore, I bought it. Urghh. I just think of all the other books I could have bought. I just have to keep my list and my goodreads list up to date.

I also did a physical check of all my books. I had to see if I had got rid of some, lent some out, lost some, etc. I found that I had lost some or given some away and needed to cross them off my list. I now keep track of the books I lend out and make sure I get them back. I'd forget what books I'd lent and to whom - don't like losing books. There are still a few that are missing that I don't think I lent out that I need to find. (They must be in random boxes instead of my book boxes.)

When I went through my books, I gave away a lot of my childhood books that I've had forever. Now I think, I should have kept that one, and what about this. Some of those books I gave to my brother's kids, but I don't think any of his kids are very big readers.

I am in the market looking for some new bookshelves. I want some nice ones - as in solid wood and not that particle board stuff. Those just don't hold up. I have some heavy books that need sturdy shelving. Anyone have any ideas where to get a nice one for a good price?

Sharon, you draw?

message 204: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments @Sharon - NC, hands down. It's the furniture capital of the country. I would suggest getting unfinished wood if you have the time - its a lot cheaper.

message 205: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (narknon) NC? Does that mean North Carolina? or something else?

message 206: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments ok-Reading to kids...true story.(and it just might explain something about my sick sense of humor)

My dad had in his head to teach us the 'classics', but not being much of a reader he was not sure what those were. So he would buy big antholgies of short stories by people he had heard of (which it ends up were O. Henry and Edgar Allen Poe). Our favorite was Edgar Allen Poe. Now this was pre-kindergarten mind you, and my sisters and I would always ask for Poe to listen to before we went to bed. We especially liked Anabel Lee and we as a surprise for our dad at one point recited the whole thing from memory...all at ages 4, 5, and 6!

Why not stop by in Richmond, VA and see his grave too? lol.

You should check out http://www.lindenrowinn.com/ - it's a hotel now. It was created from a group of houses that include Poe's childhood home.

For some reason I feel like I've said that before...?

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Thanks for sharing, Sharon. You're really quite talented!

Very nice!!

message 218: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll email ya, MrsJ. The only thing I have on GR is a charcoal rendering I did of my daughter :) I'm actually working on a new pic for Fantasy Aficianados. I got all hot and bothered over it for about two days and then fell back into the book trap ;) lol. I plan on finishing it shortly though!

message 219: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I'm still waiting, Grant! :)

message 220: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol..I know, brother! Hey I was all fired up those first couple of days and I actually got alot done. The biggest problem I had is that I drew them on my ipad so I have to get them on my desktop to merge the two layers. I'll work on it this weekend for sure!

message 221: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Cool. I'm looking forward to the results after what I saw before.

message 222: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Merge layers? Wooosh...the sound of it going over my head, lol.

message 223: by [deleted user] (new)

See, when a mommy layer and a daddy layer really love each other...

message 224: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments lol! They get together and make little baby layers?

message 225: by [deleted user] (new)

After a lot of merging, of course.

message 228: by [deleted user] (new)

All right, I think about done with my Urban Fantasy character :) There's been a bit of a change from the first sketch that I showed you and Danielle, Jason. Lol, I figured pasty white woman in fire engine red was a bit overdone so instead I decided to give a nod to MrsJoseph since she's my fav and all ;) I'll try to finish up the Epic Fantasy warrior today or Saturday then it's just a matter of deciding on a background and some kinky "mergin" :P

message 229: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm...it's a bit small there but when you can get in close, those are Supposed to be dreads! Lol...when I'm working on it it's about three times that size so I can do intricate detailing but it doesn't really translate well on such a small scale. Ah well :)

Sorry to throw this on here but it didn't seem worth making a whole new thread :)

message 230: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 01, 2011 02:02AM) (new)

And here's a rough idea using earlier drafts of what it'll look like after said merging. I'm open to suggestions on a background by the way :) I still have a bit of work to do with my Epic fella but shouldn't take too much more :)

message 232: by [deleted user] (new)

That's one demonic looking mofo...

message 233: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) I like that, Grant - nice shading. She's gonna whoop his butt. I'd love to learn how to use any form of technology more advanced than a paintbrush - but you and Sharon almost make me want to dig out my pencils. Been a while.

Is it possible to lighten the head of the spear just a hair, to make the gun in her left hand stand out more?

message 234: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol..thanks MrsJ. I gave you big honkin gun you requested!

@ Ala. Yeah I almost thought the face was a bit much. The maniacal grin as opposed to more of a fierce scowl...i'm still debating

@ Tracey. Thank you :) Im self taught with Adobe so I know there's a ton I'm missing out on but I'm good enough for government work. You should try it! You're smart enough to do it and I haven't seen your drawings yet but knowing what I already do about you, I suspect you have mad talent!

I'll lighten the spear tonight :)

message 235: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments :-D Big guns, hehehe.

message 236: by [deleted user] (new)

I was gonna give ya an AK but then recalled our survivalist convos and decided a tactical Benelli was more appropriate (according to my own buying advice! lol) ;)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Oh yah, urban threat there go with a 12 gauge.

message 238: by Tracey (last edited Apr 01, 2011 11:17AM) (new)

Tracey (stewartry) Heh - in space no one can hear you scream; on the internet no one can see you blush. Thanks! I've played with Photoshop, and it's wound up looking like just that: a small child, playing. I'll have to see what I can dig up and post in my profile...

The eyes are nice and scary.

message 239: by [deleted user] (new)

Grant, I think the guy looks perfect. Insane and nearly gleeful at the thought of violence. I like it.

message 240: by Sharon (last edited Apr 01, 2011 11:28AM) (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Thanks, everyone.

Grant, do you have anyplace I can see more of your work? (Very good action, people are not something I do well)

Love to see others' artwork ... and miss going to the art shows where I used to end up swapping quite a lot.

Email me from the blog if you'd like.

I like it, too!

message 243: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) Yeah. I always assume when I lend a book I am giving it up with kindness. It may come back beat up, or not come back at all, but I accept this because I want to spread the love of the authors I love.

Sometimes I do give away books I wish I'd kept when I'm paring down my shelves. Luckily, I give them to my mother, and she keeps both of them.

My parrot chews my books with some frequency. This is a natural effect of owning a parrot, and it doesn't get to me.

message 244: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I would lose my mind, lol. I couldn't deal - at all - with my books being chewed on. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have children...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Why...teach them the value of books. :) I only had a few books damaged by my kids. They learned early what they were allowed to touch and so on. I do still have an older hardback Peanuts collection that my daughter tried to color in, but that gives it it's own sort of value. :)

message 246: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I've been very careful to teach my two puppies that we LOVE and respect books in this house. This includes book marks - after two unfortunate incidents...

message 247: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments CicadaGrrl-- we recently lost the edges of two library books to a very adventurous and busy grey parrot. First time it happened... He was always brave, but his shredding is increasing. Must be getting nesty. Dogs were always fine, once they got past teething.

My very worst library mistake--and one I have yet to break, sadly--is reading in the bath. More than one of my books had to be replaced because of warped pages.

My African Grey has done the same, while I was reading and so engrossed I didn't notice. But my real problem is mice. Living in the woods, it is almost impossible to keep mice out of the house and they can do much damage in little time. I've even had them chew their way into a wood shelf with glass doors. Humidity is also a problem. We have already started using the air conditioner because of humidity.

I am looking for a metal cabinet to keep my special books in. Any suggestions?

message 250: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments We had that problem at my grandparents...but they have outdoor cats and that resolved (most of) the problem.
