Yeah. That song has enough hooks for four songs.

Speaking of which, Joey Ramones's cover of "What a Wonderful World" is being used by Rupert Murdoch to sell his Daily Tablet.

Feh...

message 120: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments So one spring day in 1996, my guitarist of forever and I walked into my room and turned on the radio in time to hear an absolutely blistering live version of Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend," complete with a slowed-and-swung breakdown that isn't in the album version. We took one look at each other and raced for the record button on my cassette deck, not caring what was in there, and managed to get the last twenty seconds.
That began a fifteen year search for a copy of the performance. We thought it must be from the HFStival, or some other local and live thing, but we were never able to track it down.

The other day, he called me over to his house, pressed play on his iPod, and the room filled with...that song!
It's on iTunes now, as part of some anniversary repackaging of the album that includes alternate takes. The recording starts with an "this is the title track off the new album that'll be out soon" introduction. It's every bit as awesome as I remembered it.

Hooray!

Sweet is/was a genius. He deserves to be carried around Lincoln, Nebraska on a throne for the rest of his life if for nothing more than having written "Sick of Myself" and "Time Capsule."

Fucking A...

Jammies Jim, I like her music very much, although Who Will Comfort Me strikes me as a little self-indulgent. I also admire her tremendously, given what she's been through and overcome.
