Anna hm. Twilight is a crap piece of writing, and Harry Potter isn't.

message 102: by Amelia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amelia Mapstone HARRY POTTER WILL ALWAYS KICK TWILIGHT'S BUTT!!! HONESTLY, I DON'T THINK ANYTHING COULD TAKE J.K. ROWLING'S AMAZING PLOT AND PERFECT CHARACTERS!!!

message 103: by Eriana (new)

Eriana Well hp started off with a huge fan base and the fans are what fueled the book to the sucess it has achieved, but many ppl have told me how twlight is just being read b/c everyone else is. Atleast hp was read and recommended for its plot and storyline being more than two teens falling in love, that plot is so played out.
Harrypotter over twlight any day!!!

Quack For the most part, within this single discussion, it seems the fans of each series embody the books they prefer brilliantly. Overall the fans of Twilight exhibit weaker sentence structure, unsupported convictions, and a general breathless girlishness. Harry Potter on the other hand appears to attract a wider demographic, those with an ability to conjugate, who define their likes, dislikes and limits well, and at the same time manage to post interesting and readable responses. For the most part; it gets pretty rough at the tail end of this discussion.

I’ve read both series. Twilight I finished (this is going to sound ridiculous, bear with me) simply because it was so bad. My sister and I both get a kick out of awful literature. We find it hilarious. Bella Swan, Jesslen Stormheart, random time traveling Viking romances, and anything geared for only one sex, from chick lit to over the top action adventure, is deeply entertaining when read in in partnership whith someone who ‘gets the joke’.

Back on topic, neither of the authors are especially exceptional when judged purely by their prose. Rowling comes out ahead, but doesn’t exactly distinguish herself. Where the difference is most prominent is the content itself. Rowling brings to life deeper, stronger, and less stereotypical characters, weaves a complex story with many interconnecting threads, and (for some) breaks down, melts and re-welds your heart in the processes.

The stories are comparable. You can, for instance, compare a jukebox and a giraffe. The jukebox is an entertaining instrument, but it does not approach the organic complexity and inherent mystery that a living creature likes the giraffe possesses.

For a fantastic argument that is vaguely on topic with this discussion you should link to the below. The author finally helped me realize (finally!) why mediocre writing enjoys overwhelming popularity.

(This discussion is getting a bit outdated, but I had to jump in. Sorry for the dissertation.)

I think the reason Twilight has such a large fan-base of young girls is because most haven’t been exposed to a wide range of literature. There are many, many other series dealing with high school romances between vampires and humans, with many similar plot points and conventions. However, if you haven’t read them, Twilight would seem original and refreshing.
Meyer’s books are popular because they were marketed well. Labeling them as “the next Harry Potter” was one of the best marketing ploys of all.

I'm sure many of you will look back on the Twilight series with fondness, but beleive me, (I'm only 20 so you don't have to :P) you are going to come across some GREAT STUFF, if you keep on reading.

message 106: by Theshiney (last edited Dec 04, 2008 08:05PM) (new)

Theshiney i only read the first two harry potters and gave up cause it wasnt up my alley. however, i was impressed at the writing. i could actually see how the author might successfully develop these characters over 7 freakin books... impressive. and i may get to them at some point because of it.

my perspective is: i was a teacher during the days when potter exploded. for kindergarten and first graders... they ate potter up. and when they got older they read em themselves... now thats cool.
while i havent read any twilight (and have no interest- in the movie either), i see potter as a phenomenon- like superman (everyone knows), and twilight as a fad - like the death of superman (member that?)... props to potter... imao, obviously

i cant help myself...

re: message 16 and 17

christine,
if you are so uptight about spelling and grammar, why dont you extend yourself and harangue Bella for misspelling "your," or are you not that perfect? get off yr high chair... i had to let it out because you actually had the nerve to call Bella "very childish and foolhardy" when you are the one (politely?!) pointing out Samantha's foibles in your previous post- while she acknowledges her difficulty with spelling AND is still willing to contribute to the discussion...think about it...

Khadija i'd like to point out something..in new moon (twilight's sequel) there was something that really pissed me off... SM showed girls as hopeless creature that cannot live without a man. ok, i know that girls and boys are made for each other but the way Meyer showed it in the book...ugh! it was as if she was encouraging us all on the wrong things. when there's no edward, bella is lifeless. because there is no edward, bella finds herself in danger and doesn't try to get away because she fancies herself hearing edward's voice. so, she almost goes forward in the arms of men who want to rape her just to hear edward's voice. then she decides to have an accident on the motorbike ON PURPOSE just to hear edward's voice. THEN, she JUMPS OFF THE CLIFF JUST TO HEAR edward's voice. that's sooooooooooooooooooooo foolish, idiotic, stupid and many many other nasty adjective. bella doesn't want to complete her education cuz she wants to stay with edward. ugh! Meyer shows us girls as complete air-head and seems to almost encourage suicidal thoughts just because there is no edward. bo hoo!

message 108: by Helene (new)

Helene Ridiculous comparison!! Harry Potter is the work of a genius - the characters and the plot have so much depth and the books hold their own.
You want a comparison? Try Harry Potter vs. His Dark Materials. Now there's a close competition!!

message 109: by Lisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lisa I think they are compared to each other because of their core audiences both being the young, but enjoyable for all ages. They both take you into their own alternate realities with endearing characters. Whether a person stands by Harry Potter or the Cullens depends on if they fantasize about wizards, and dragons or the urban legends of vampires and werewolves.

Jessica Khadija - I totally agree. Both New Moon and Eclipse were too much pathetic female protagonist for me to truly enjoy.

Twilight is in no way comparable to Harry Potter. Teen girl phenomenon does not equal quality reading. That said, I still enjoyed the movie, and these reasons encompass why nicely

Kamberli She doesn't make it seem like women can't live without a man, In Twilight is says how she is irrevocobly in love with him!!! so when he leaves it just says that Bella won't let him go!!!

message 112: by Leslie (new) - rated it 1 star

Leslie Jessica...thanks for the link to why the movie is better than the book! I totally cracked up!

message 113: by Quack (new)

Quack Jessic-Loved the link...so true. Thanks!

message 114: by Noël (new) - rated it 5 stars

Noël Robert Pattinson has NOTHING to do with the books, he just plays in The Goblet of Fire(the fourth one) and Twilight!!! He is an acotr and is not physically in the books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree i never thought of it that way but I mean Bella like depends on Edward a lot. Now I am pretty sure that Mrs. Meyer only meant to show how much Bella missed Edward but it is also tell the world that when a girl loses her boyfriend she crumples into an unmovable heap. Edward also said that he had missed her and i guess he had missed her enough to commit suicide when he thought she was dead (sorry if i ruined a little of the book)but it was also kind of pathetic that Bella ran all the way to Rome for him(again sorry)

message 116: by Noël (new) - rated it 5 stars

Noël It really wasn't pathetic if you think about it because Bella was determined not to give up on true love, even if it seemed like edward had already. She pretty much, to put it simple, wasn't going to give up on something that she truly believed in, something that many people do every day

Kamberli I don't know how anybody could dare compare Twilight to harry potter!!! Twilight beats all!!! you don't read many books where you actually feel like your the main character!!! Not that Harry Potter isn't good, but it is not near as good as Twilight!!!

message 118: by Miranda (last edited Dec 11, 2008 01:35PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Miranda it's a tie for me. i love twilight more though. maybe that's because i havent read all the harry.loved twilight more butthe movie for harry potter was way better, but twilight is good too......idk....both.

message 119: by 4ubaby (new)

4ubaby um not to make any enemies or anything but this is what we are suppose to do discuss the book if you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen and drama has nothing to do with anything. your image of the site should stay the same because it is a book site and we are talking about books here if you didn't know so if you want to leave go a head but you shouldn't leave such a bad impression of yourself

message 120: by 4ubaby (new)

4ubaby i guess but it still didn't make sense that after half a year she was still sulking how long dose it take to get over one guy. she could have dated like 3 other guys like: Eric, Mike, or Tyler. just because she wants to belittle herself by running into Edwards arms after he left her for so long is her business really i just wouldn't

message 123: by Amy (last edited Dec 16, 2008 05:56PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy i think harry's better.I have read both series many times, but after my second time reading twilight and new moon and eclipse and breaking dawn, i began to see the flaws. i admit i was hooked for a while, obsessed over them with my friends (and on goodreads) but by now i know it was just a fad and that the rest of you will soon let it go, like so many other popular things. Twilight has inconsistencies and fairly shallow characters. HP, on the other hand, even though i do see its minor (very, very, minor) mistakes , had made me cry and laugh and shiver a bit inside every time i read it, and i think it will always be that way. One thing that annoys me is when people try to compare them without having read both. with only one perspective, of course you'll choose the book you read! (usually. im sorry if any of you think i'm being stereotypical.) i also feel kind of weird writing this because the two series are so different. but i still wanted to say what i thought.

Kamberli I have read the books seven times in two years and I still have an obsession I don't think it will go away for awhile!!! Twilight is better than Harry Potter by a long ways!!!

Shannon ehheheheheheheh XDDD ROTFLMBO!!

nothing other than simply laughable...
the comparison is pathetic. Nothing can honestly match the two on a considerable level, especially since the two don't really have anything in common other than the fact that they both have to do with mythical-type profiles.

As much as i hate to admit it however, it is true... the media is indeed have a field day, saying that Twilight is the next Harry Potter. As much as I despise having the utter the words... that is most likely true. the turnout says it all. A series of books turns into a movie sensation... it doesn't often happen. this is the next biggest thing (whether it be considered good or bad in the opnions of many) SINCE Rowling's astounding creation.

Twilight might as well be the death of Harry Potter. it's sad but true.

Given Harry Potter's epic genuis and Twilights rather naive state of being [so to speak:] it's funny to think about, still.
the next trend to be on the markets. the next story to have thousands of girls after the main guys. the next series to have everyone after it, fighting for more...

As I said. Sad but true. It's inevitable.

message 126: by Libni (new) - rated it 5 stars

Libni Way better than harry potter man you cant even compare that!!!

message 127: by 4ubaby (new)

4ubaby I understand what you are saying. Now that everyone else thinks it is the best thing in the world it is just pointless now. Now when you talk about Harry Potter you know that only a certain type of person can understand the book. And just to put it out there I hate people who have just read twilight and think every damn vampire is like that too. I mean seriously who the heck wouldn't think that something is wrong with them. They've lived all this time and only Bella has actually figured it out. Though she did need some help while we are in the subject who can not stand Jacob. I mean really NO MEANS NO

Khadija u've just given me an idea, 4ubaby, how did bella, who's a total idiot, was the only one apart from jake and his dad to figure that the cullens were vampires?! surely the whole town cannot be a bunch of idiots, or even more idiotic than bella? i can't imagine that!!

Kamberli I know alot more people who like Twilight ALOT better than Harry Potter!!! I mean Twilight has all those hot guys and an amazing story line!!! I don't know how someone can even try to compare them!!! Everybody says that Stephenie Meyer will be the next J.K. Rowling and I don't believe it!!! I think that she will be way way better!!!

message 130: by Anitra (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anitra why are people even bothering to compare the two? they are two totally differt types of stroies!!. one is a vampire love story the other is a cursed wizard!!! if thier wasn't a love between edward and Bella twilight wouldn't exsit. I think the comparision is a stupid. I love both stories and have read all of the books a thousand times. comparing the talent of the writters isn't even fair. they both have thier own styles and the stories are told form different view points!! even the movies can't be compared in styles and creativity. the only way to compare these two amazing stories is by book and box office sells. So here's what I would suggest. The seveth harry potter movie and the third twilight movie come out on the same weekend let the public sell decide! o and those twilight fans should know that the 2nd movie will come out November 2009 and Harrp Potter half blood prince comes out july 2009

Kandice Khadija wrote: "u've just given me an idea, 4ubaby, how did bella, who's a total idiot, was the only one apart from jake and his dad to figure that the cullens were vampires?! surely the whole town cannot be a bun..."

Edward was attracted to Bella, so she was more exposed to them. I mean, even when she first sat next to him, there was a reaction. It seems the Cullens kept themselves very apart from everyone, normally. Had it not been Bella about to be squashed, Edward never would have risked exposure by saving her, so that was the first of a long line of clues.

message 133: by Katy (last edited Dec 18, 2008 12:46PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Katy It's like comparing a giant, moist, gooey, chocolate cake to a slightly burnt cookie you find on the floor. You might pick the cookie up, blow the dirt off, and eat it if you're really hungry, and it might just taste OKAY. But really, you'd prefer the cake. Who wouldn't?

*Please tell me I do not have to specify which is the cake and which is the cookie. It should be obvious.

message 134: by Etta (new) - rated it 5 stars

Etta do you even have to ask og course twilight that is so obvious

message 135: by Katy (new) - rated it 1 star

Katy HA! No. Harry Potter is always the obvious choice. Twilight is, at best, subpar. It's definitely floor-cookie material.

this is exactly right, u cant compare them and im tired of people trying! and im not saying ones better and thats why they cant be compared, im saying that they are just so overall different! vampires or witches?
magic or more realistic setting?
heroic or romance?
i luv both twilight and hp, anf i am tired of people argueing over my 2 favorite series! plz people, i know u want to get ur opinion out there, but stop argueing!

message 137: by Amy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Amy well, its a debate isn't it? that's the point, you argue a bit.

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

i wholeheartedly agree with Jenn (message 145). They are both wonderful and thrilling books and I love both of them sooooo much!!! But they are way too different to try and compare them!

The bottom line is: they are one of the greatest series out there and they both have ups and downs in the story! But that does not necessarily make it better than the other! They are the best books I ever read and I will never try to say that one is better the other!

message 139: by 4ubaby (new)

4ubaby I agree stick to the topic people

message 140: by Krista (new) - rated it 3 stars

Krista Though both of them are good series, Harry Potter is a bajillion times better. Yes, I just said bajillion. JK Rowling is consistent and makes sense all of the time, unlike Stephanie Meyer. The world of Hogwarts and magic is much more imaginative then the world of Forks. I agree with everyone, Harry Potter is a much better series.

message 141: by Emma (new) - added it

Emma I love both , easily a couple of my favourtie books/series.
But as a girl i prefer twilight, the romance and thrill and despair and love, in my opinion makes them great reads.
Although i adore Harry Potter!

message 142: by Grace (new) - rated it 5 stars

Grace TWILIGHT IS THE BEST BY A MILE.
they are both good though. Twilight is somthing that sticks with you after the movie but i forgot all about Harry Potter after seeing them. The only one i liked was the Goblet of Fire.
Oh dear, maybe its because Rob Pattinson is in them both...

message 144: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Reading the "Twilight" series for me was more about the emotion it envoked and that I could relate to the fantasy it involves from my experience as a teen age girl rather than the quality of writing. I've read "The Host", as well and I must say that in my opinion, SM does has some great story premises and ideas, however her quality of writing isn't all that great. When comparing "Harry Potter" and the "Twilight" series, I have to go with "Harry Potter" as being the better written one. As I've read many of the other other posts for this discussion, I wonder if some fans are basing their opinion of actual writing skill or the emotion they have felt through reading the series which are two separate aspects of writing. It is perfectly fine to love a book or series because of the emotional connection you have to it even if it isn't written exceptionally well. The books we read and love serve different purposes in our lives. Some are for enjoyment, others more learning information, and even others for being more thought-provoking. I love both series for different reasons.

message 145: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin I haven't had the chance to read any of the Harry Potter serires books. But i have read all the Twilight books. And that's only because i love vampires. They fascinate me to some extent. But the way girls are throwing themselves at Robert Pattinson all because of his character is ridiculous. I like the character he plays not him. And i dont' think that Twilight is the new Harry Potter because they are nothing alike. In Harry Potter there is no romance and no exciting thrill of wether you're going to die by being sucked on or live the next day. And then Twilight is nothing like Harry Potter because it doesn't have the witchcraft and the meanings of friendship and hurt behind the morals in actual story.

The way i see it. Every one is making Twilight TOOOOOOO big and need to cool down just a notch. I mean neither one of these books have anything going on with reality. There are no vampires, no wizards, no witches. None of that. Its good imagination food. Thats all. So quit arguing over which is better.

message 146: by Daisy (new)

Daisy i think that harry potter is definitely way better but twilight is still a good, and addicting, book! harry potter is just amazing and will always be no. 1 but twilight was good in a different way. they are both unique.

message 147: by Janice (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice I think the biggest reason they ever were linked is simply because they're both a series geared towards young adults dealing with supernatural forces.

I think the rest of the comparisons are stretches. I think they're two totally different series of books and I loved both series for what they are....fun, engrossing and TOTALLY imagination-stimulating!
