No, that's not it -- I think that probably came out about 10 years earlier. But thanks, though! So annoying. I remember all these tiny details (like her stepfather's name was Seth, and their building had a terrible elevator) but not the author or title.
Is it It's Not the End of the World by Judy Blume? Pub date is 1972 but it was probably re-released a few times.
No -- it's not the Judy Blume one, but thanks! The thing I liked about the mystery book was that it didn't over-dramatize the divorce, which wasn't the main point of the story. The story was really about getting along with step-siblings and adjusting to life in New York City.
I don't know your book, Rachel, but your post made me think of two other tween books about blended families that I loved as a kid: Colt and The Great Pony Hassle. (...Can you tell I was horse crazy as a kid?) Both of them really stressed the families' blending and not the divorces.
omg! I think I found it! "Happily Ever After, Almost" by Judie Wolkoff. Eleven-year-old Kitty and her sister look forward to their mother's remarriage, but not to getting a stepbrother.

It's narrated by a girl who lives around NYC who's probably 12. Her mother gets divorced and remarries a nice guy named Seth, and they all move into a loft in Soho or somewhere and start to renovate it. The central drama concerns the girl trying to get along with her new, snobby stepbrother who lives with them part-time. Eventually the kids all learn to get along, but then the boy's mother sues for custody to get him back full-time.
As a child of divorce, I loved the book (because it wasn't about divorce ruining kids' lives) but now I can't track it down. I'd love to find it again. Thanks!
