Sarah | 13814 comments I love soup. I used to hate it. I was a strange child. Who could hate soup?

I am very excited to go home to my 20 hour the time is built into the name slow cooker split pea soup. Very, very excited.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments 20 hours? Wow, that's a long time to wait for soup!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love a good split pea soup. At some point, I may need to bother you for that recipe.

message 4: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I always used to buy Campbell's soup, until I got my 6 quart Staub pot and discovered Better Than Boullion at Trader Joe's. Now I make my own soups. They are WAY better than anything I ever had out of a can.

message 5: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I went to a little bar around the corner from work for lunch. They have the best Clam Chowder.

I love a good Bean soup, and Split Pea too.

I don't think you want this recipe. It said "cook on low for four hours" and it took twenty. I will be looking for an honest recipe to replace it.

On the plus side, it really was very simple from an ingredient standpoint, but I haven't had dinner in two days while waiting for it.

I sometimes adore soup, and sometimes don't. I have to be in the right mood.

message 8: by Auntie (new)

Auntie Raye-Raye (fabulousraye) I love cooking and eating soup.

My perfect job would entail just making soup and specials all day long.

I have a really delicious lentil and bacon bone soup recipe yummy.

My favourite soups are Thai -- Tom Ka Gai or a Tom Yum Goong. Heavenly.

I also love a laska laksa (with lots of the yummy chilly paste added.) I usually cook a chicken verson. Here is a picture of the last chicken laska laksa soup I made.

Chicken Laska

I LOVE tom ka gai soup.

message 11: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I thought it was Laksa.

Ha it is I just have dyslexic typing.

My husband hates soup. Haaaaaaaaates it.

If I had never moved beyond the canned soups of my childhood, like Campbell's tomato, I would hate soup too.

message 15: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments How does he feel about chili? Or stew?

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband hates soup too. Grrrrrrr.

message 17: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) He loves chili and stew; I don't know what the problem is with soup. I've offered to make some nice thick split pea soup or (my fave) French onion soup but he always says "No thanks."

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Mary I think your husband and mine must be related.

Jammies Lobstergirl wrote: "I sometimes adore soup, and sometimes don't. I have to be in the right mood."

Me too.

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I could live on soup and pasta. Or soup with pasta in it.

I could live on pasta.

Seizure Romero | 99 comments Soup is delicious.

Carry on.

message 23: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (aquariusnat) When I was a kid I loved tomato soup with grilled cheese sandwiches !

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Mmmmm french onion soup. Love it.

message 25: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments Ditto. Love Mimi's version.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Mimi's does have a pretty good one. So does Panera bread.

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Some Paneras are instituting a "pay what you want to" policy, I hear.

message 28: by Aynge (new)

Aynge (ayngemac) | 1202 comments I still haven't been to Panera.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) They have a good lunch combo where you can pick either a soup and half sandwich, soup and salad, or salad and half sandwich. I always get the french onion soup and either their fuji apple salad or one of their pressed paninis with the iced green tea (which tastes more like a sweet drink than actual green tea, but it's sooo good).

message 30: by Michael (new)

Michael Lobstergirl wrote: "Some Paneras are instituting a "pay what you want to" policy, I hear."

I think there's only two of them at this point and they're both self-sustaining. In a world where people don't hold doors for others, or offer thanks when a door is held open for them, that some people would actually pay more for food so that someone who doesn't have enough money can eat is something that gives me faith that the world isn't totally fucked up. Unfortunately, the one time I had a tuna sandwich at Panera I got sick but their bagels and coffee are alright.

message 31: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I love good homemade soup of any kind - split pea, lentil, turkey noodle soup. Just don't give me chemical soup. That's the little packets of chicken noodle soup that you dump into boiling water. Bleck!

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Homemade French onion soup tonight. Delish

message 33: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) How about cold soup, like vichyssoise? (not sure I spelled that correctly) My grandmother used to make a cold cucumber soup in the summer that was quite refreshing.

message 34: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 136 comments Soups are wonderful. My mother-in-law makes a lovely cold blueberry soup. I was on a butternut squash soup kick this fall. And I have my husband's grandmother's recipe for apple soup that I want to try.

message 35: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Just once?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love cold, sweet soups. You'll often find strawberry and melon soups on cruise ships as filler courses for some reason.

message 37: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments Correct stacia, I had many good cold soups on the cruise. Strawberry, cucumber, bing cherry...

Aren't cold fruit soups just smoothies in bowls?

I'm making a lot of soup these days. I'm trying to recreate my neighbor's (no, not that neighbor) chicken noodle that she brought us after Leah was born. God it was good. I'm getting closer.
Last night's version featured minced ginger and garlic, cut spaghetti noodles, and carrots.

message 40: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) That sounds really good.

I think smoothies have to have yogurt, and cold fruit soups are often made with wine. Yum yum!

message 42: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments We had Home Made French Onion soup for supper last night, topped with Gruyere, along with canned beef - excellent.

message 43: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I have never eaten canned beef. What's it like?

message 44: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments It's kind of like small pieces of roast beef with a hint of a salty taste. We really like it.

message 45: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I'm kind of a snob about the homemade stock in my soup/risotto. I like the Joy of Cooking's instructions for roasted beef/chicken/lamb/veg stocks. Love the way it makes the house smell, too.

Sarah | 13814 comments BunWat wrote: "Sarah Pi, is it possible your split peas were just really old and dried out? I once accepted a jar of beans from a friend who was moving and those beans took a day and a half to cook up."

I had just bought them at the natural foods co-op. I assume they have good turnover of stock, but I may be wrong.

I like canned beef too.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments We made sweet potato-apple-chipotle soup last night, off a Moosewood recipe. It is FANTASTIC. And less than an hour from start-of-chopping to eating.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh yum. Recipe?

message 50: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Moosewood recipes often involve a lot of chopping I've noticed.
