It's so hard to pick favorite books, though Shadow and Bone (and the next two in the series) will always hold a special place in my heart. The first YA book I remember reading was Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, and it was excellent. It made me realize that not all YA novels were pure fluff, although there is a place for that. :)

My favorite books overall are Watership Down, Brave New World, and The Hobbit (don't get me started on the movie adaptations).

hey caroline! i love both percy jackson and harry potter, and i'm actually pretty surprised that there's a rift in your class between the two - all my friends who've read one of the two like the other just as much. i started watching the movies first (because i was way too young to comprehend the phrase books without pictures, haha), but i definitely recommend reading the first two! it does get a little slow and the writing is pretty straightforward, but it's where everything starts! the third book is where everything starts picking up speed, which is right, but i'd definitely give the first and second books a chance. maybe it's just me being a series purist and doing the whole "read the first book before anything else!!!!" kind of thing, but yeah! and if you're not a fan of the first two books, the movies are pretty solid as well :) good luck!
