Sharman Russell (sharmanaptrussell) | 3 comments Hello, everyone, I'm Sharman Apt Russell. Totally new to the group. Upfront--I'm an author. It feels like I've read and written YA literature all my life, but in truth that probably didn't start to happen until after I was ten or so. I love magic realism. I love the "classics" of magical YA but I'll just mention here The Book Thief and Diary of a Part-time Indian as some favorite recent books.

Freddie DiFranco (marsjaws) | 4 comments Hello, everyone!

I'm a newly published author and avid reader! I'm currently spending a year abroad teaching English in Japan. It's great to connect with fellow YA writers and readers! Y'all will be great comfort when I start getting homesick! I love reading all kinds of genres, but fantasy and sci-fi hold special places in my heart. I'm always on the lookout for a new book to add to my (currently small) shelf, so please feel free to add me and recommend new books for me to try! My other hobbies besides reading and writing include nature walks, drawing, playing the ukulele and guitar, and MMA. I'm looking for new things to try, as well!

You can check out LUCID here! Lucid

Some of my favourite YA books have got to be Harry Potter, Hunger Games, (the first two books of) Divergent, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Ender's Game and the Night Circus. I'm also mildly obsessed with A Song of Ice and Fire, but I guess that's a whole different group altogether!

I'm working on my first novel, I'm into romance bks, I like to upload bookish videos, & I used to read manga, but now that I'm back to reading this year I decided to start picking up novels, any suggestions?

message 2663: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Readnour Hi Robby, nice to have you join the group. I'm an avid reader myself. I also love writing. My debut novel Visions is coming out this fall.

Kaitlynn, my daughter liked Mortal Instruments, which I have yet to read. Have you given that series a try?

InkReads, if you like romance have you read Between the Lines series by Tamara Webber? There's four in that series and the last two are my favorite.

I'm not too active on this board, but I'm trying!

I haven't read Between the Lines, why don't you like the first 2??? :0 I read the description about the 1st book and I like the idea of a bitter ex-girlfriend and a rival for Emma’s affections, :D but I wasn't sure about Emma finally years of acting she got a big break and secretly want to be a normal girl.

I did enjoy the first two books, but the last two I enjoyed the most :)) I love the author's writing style. She's among my favorite authors. She also wrote Easy and Breakable, but they are more new adult. (Easy needs to be read before Breakable)

I get what you mean about wanting to be normal after getting a big break, but it doesn't effect the story any. IMO anyway. Hope that helps!

George Lightgood | 21 comments Hey Everybody!

My name is George and I'm a new member and am about as far off the demographic average of this group as you can get! My wife and I live in Italy - she is Italian and I am 'Murican.

I joined YABC for two reasons. 1) As a reader to learn about new, interesting YA titles. 2) As a writer, to hear the opinions of YA fans.

I read voraciously and have since I was a little kid. I write constantly just for the sake of writing. I've said somewhere else that it is the literary equivalent of cocktail napkin doodling. Writing stories is almost the same as reading a new one. Who knows what will happen next?

Often I will read several books at the same time, unless I hit on one that is totally engrossing. I read YA because a good story is a good story. Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight - to me, those are as imaginative and good of stories as Lord of the Rings, Hunt for Red October or Bram Stoker's original Dracula.

My preferred genres (I do not consider YA a genre as much as it is a category of audience, but will include it anyway) are Science Fiction, Fantasy, Spy Thrillers and Dystopian/Apocalyptic Fiction and YA. That said, I will read almost anything so long as it is a good story.

message 2679: by Kym (new)

Kym If YA isn't a genre, what is it? I see it as a genre, with other sub-genres - YA fiction, YA fantasy, etc. I guess you could call it an identifier, though it's only some publishers that will provide the genre to go with the identifier. It seems that they lump all YA into the same category, regardless of sub-genre.There is a huge difference between The Fault in Our Stars and the Harry Potter series, just as there is a difference between The Wedding Dress (Rachel Hauck) and Wedding Night (Sophie Kinsells). The former falls more into the literary genre, while the latter is comic, even though they could both be considered romance. Only the latter is identified as romance.

message 2680: by George (last edited Sep 29, 2014 04:49AM) (new)

George Lightgood | 21 comments Kym wrote: "If YA isn't a genre, what is it? ...

Hi Kym! You are absolutely correct in the differences you listed. For me, genre is more the "cuisine" of the story, like cooking. Romance or Horror is the same, in my mind, as Indian or, say, authentic Mexican food. Obviously, one can have "mixes" in genre, the same as in cooking. Paranormal Romance, for example, the same way we have Tex-Mex cooking or Americanized Italian foods - it's a mix.

Identifying YA as a genre is like creating a book category called Senior Citizen. But, I see your point and as "some author" said, "A rose by any other name..."

To me, some of the best stories are coming out of YA fiction. I clarified my post above since it was confusingly written. That is why we have re-reads! LOL

message 2681: by Jay (new)

Jay Kennedy Hello! I'm Jay, i'm 18 years old living in Canada, and new to Goodreads. I've been reading since a young age, and have wanted to be an author since I was 7 years old. I still have a ton of different stories written down and a trilogy that I plan to fully write once I get the time. I read a lot of YA when I was younger and have just started to get into it again. I also read a lot of adult fantasy books and sometimes the odd classic. Some of my favorite books are the Divergent series, Harry Potter, The Lighting Thief series, and anything by Brent Weeks or Brandon Sanderson. I will be starting a Booktube channel soon, and can't wait to get started. Feel free to add me :)
