Sarah | 13815 comments And they are?

My favorite local radio station just sent out a call for answers to that question. I think they'll probably turn it into a countdown that should be pretty awesome. In the past they've asked for more general things like "the best ten songs of all time" and the answers are inevitably Imagine, Hey Jude, etc. I think this question is kind of neat because it allows you to ignore the concept of "best" and just put in what you love.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments the top 10 country hits of 2010. i want to be as motivated as possible to find a way off the island

message 3: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Not going to the desert island, nope nope nope. It took me weeks of agonizing before I could commit to 5 CDs and now you want to limit me to 10 song?

message 4: by janine (new)

janine | 7715 comments i'm going to write a letter to apple to complain about this crappy ipod that can only contain ten songs.

message 5: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11694 comments "This is the song that never ends,
it goes on and on my friends.
Someone started singing it not knowing what it was,
and they'll continue singing it forever just because...

(repeat from top)"

Or maybe, "Ten Trillion Bottles of Beer on the Wall."

If I'm not alone already on my island, I soon will be.

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13815 comments That's a great shebang idea, Barb! I wonder if I've already used some of them on other shebangs or not. I've been trying not to repeat.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments There's NO WAY to narrow down to my top ten favorite songs. Just my top ten that come to mind at the moment.

Like, if I was forced to grab ten in the next five minutes before being air evacuated to the island, I would panic, and pick:

Moondance - Van Morrison
Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel
Peg - Steely Dan
Band on the Run - Wings
Voodoo Child - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Suzanne - Fairport Convention
Skating - Vince Guaraldi
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
Superstition - Stevie Wonder

Sarah | 13815 comments I love that you picked Starman!

message 9: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart I know one is definitely "Black" by Pearl Jam.

The accoustic or electrical version of Layla?

message 15: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments 10 version of I've Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts

Sarah | 13815 comments Dan wrote: "The accoustic or electrical version of Layla? "

Are there people who like the acoustic version better? Why? I feel like the song is made by Duane Allman's slide in the instrumental coda.

I hope there aren't.

you can always sing that one by yourself. there are several of my favorites that didn't make the desert island, because i know i have the music and lyrics memorized, and on a desert island i don't have to worry about anyone hearing me sing.

i know when i saw clapton in concert last the power and strength of the full volume electric version of layla made the concert.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments The first half of Layla, the electric version, is awesome.
I have actually faded out the instrumental part on mixed tapes midway through, so that it wouldn't be on the tape. Is that sacrilege?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments Awesome, Kevin! That man has gone through hell, and it's all there in that song.

message 24: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments dan, the electric version. I do love the acoustic, but the electric is truly a classic in the true sense of the word.

message 25: by Jonathan (last edited Jan 14, 2011 02:42PM) (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4728 comments Well, it looks like Kevin and I are going to be camping out on opposite ends of this desert island:

Flatt & Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown
David Allan Coe - You Never Even Called Me By My Name
Jerry Jeff Walker - Redneck Mothers
Hank Williams - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue
Charley Pride - Crystal Chandeliers
Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner's Daughter
Soggy Bottom Boys - I am a Man of Constant Sorrow
Willie Nelson - The City of New Orleans
Roger Miller - King of the Road

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments I like King of the Road, Jonathan. How can anyone not like that song?

message 27: by janine (new)

janine | 7715 comments can i come visit for a boy named sue?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments And I love Man of Constant Sorrow by the Soggy Bottom Boys. I like a smidgeon of country.

message 29: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments If we all ended up on the same desert island it might not be so bad. we could exchange songs.

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13815 comments I like the idea of Jonathan sitting under a palm tree singing along with Man of Constant Sorrow and You Never Even Called Me By Name. It makes me think I know how he ended up there.

message 31: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4728 comments Jackie "the Librarian" wrote: "And I love Man of Constant Sorrow by the Soggy Bottom Boys. I like a smidgeon of country."

Smidgeon would be a good word to work into a country song, don't you think? A smidgeon of bourbon when my horse starts a cryin' on account of mama bein' in jail...

message 32: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4728 comments janine wrote: "can i come visit for a boy named sue?"

Of course. And if we are stuck on the island long enough, we can work on a Dutch karaoke version.

message 33: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13815 comments It would be easy to work smidgen into a country song. You can rhyme it with pigeon, which is too citified, or with religion, which isn't.

message 34: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jan 14, 2011 01:59PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, I thought about this question more or less all day. A few thoughts before I start...

1. If you really, really hate me, accidentally give me Jackie's playlist.
2. I loosely divided these songs into five “rockers” and “not-rockers”. I figure I'd want music for different moods...sometimes I'd want to rock out, sometimes I'd want to get mellower.
3. I thought a lot about songs I'd get the most out of hearing as opposed to the songs I could just sort of play in my head. For example, I can groove to Kraftwerk without actually hearing Kraftwerk, if that makes sense.

Rockers! The rockers are the kind of songs that would lift my spirits, make me want to pump my fist in the air, and burn some energy in a good way.

1. Drive-by Truckers-Let There Be Rock. I think DBT grew up in a neighborhood similar to mine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LptOc6...

2. eels-Rock Hard Times. A Great “fuck you, I can survive anything you can throw at me” song. For some reason this mix on this youtube clip takes about thirty seconds to get going. Patience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql3MkZ...

3. AC/DC-You Shook Me All Night Long. You don't really have to ask why, do you?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bomv-6...

4. Tom Waits-Downtown Train. Arguably my favorite song for close to 20 years...this song is its own weather system...it makes me feel rain on my cheeks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7jsEE...

5. Lucero-Nights Like These. This song makes me feel like I'm drunk. I'm going to need that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r4Ymy...

Not Rockers...for mellower scenarios, when I'm just leaning back against a tree or something.

6. Beach Boys-God Only Knows

So perfect, like math and love combined....I can listen to this song over and over.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDfH_J...

7. Sparklehorse-Apple Bed. I don't know if I can explain this one...but I find the main melody running through my head a lot and put this song on when I want to calm down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfzTf1...

8. Aphex Twin-Rhubarb. I feel kind of like I'm floating through space with this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVvjXJ...

9. Stars of the Lid-The Lonely People (Are Getting Lonelier). Transcendent. Like church, only better.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87SCL9...

10. Sigur Ros-Vraka. This could be the second hymn after #9. Sigur Ros makes me believe in God.

message 38: by Jonathan (last edited Jan 14, 2011 02:08PM) (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4728 comments Lots of interesting songs on your list, Anthony. I don't know too many of the ones from the second half. I'll be checking out the links. And, yeah, Dutch art and country music...no real connection there, I guess, but it works for me.

I'm still thinking.

And you call those first five songs rockers?!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments And yeah, Sarah Pi. Where's your list?

message 44: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I thought about putting some Replacements on, Myles...good call, sir. I would struggle as to what song, though..."Unsatisfied", maybe.

Also, I take it back. Both Jackie and Michelle's lists horrify me, but I think Michelle's horrifies me a little more. When the FBI surround my house and blast loud music to get me to surrender, they'll be playing "Imagine"....

message 45: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I also love the fact that Myles mentioned Aimee Mann's rat-tail.

message 46: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Hmmm... 10 songs that I'd have to listed to over and over and over, or at least as long as my battery lasted. LOL!

1. Beautiful Goodbye, Amanda Marshall
2. Blessed, Elton John
3. Europa, Santana
4. Dante's Prayer, Loreena McKennitt
5. Lady, Little River Band
6. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Platters
7. Boogie Wonderland, Earth Wind & Fire
8. Tush, ZZ Top
9. You Are Not Alone, Michael Jackson
10. You Raise Me Up, Secret Garden

message 47: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You are shitting me with #9, Janice...right?

message 48: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Agreed, it's an excellent song. With a mesmerizing video in which MJ and Lisa Marie try to convince us they're girlfriends in a Maxfield Parrish temple.

message 49: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments We have an MJ thread around here somewhere...you see, I don't hate MJ, but that, to me, is one of his worst tracks. It's...schmaltzy. I'll go back and listen again to see what I missed.
