Sabine Just because a store will take a used item back does not change if it is honest or not. You read, you used it, now it is yours, sell it on e-bay or Amazon, but to return it is like returning a dress because you only wore it once. It is still used!

message 52: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson I don't think it matters so much. If someone returns a used book, someone else can buy it as long as it's in good condition. What tacit difference does it make if they read it or not?

I mean, really if you're going to do that regularly you should join a library or something, but I don't see where it's a moral dilemma.

Samee Ya, I am pretty sure you can't return a book after you've read it. At least, if I ran a book store, that's not how I would run my business.

message 54: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah The bookstore gave me store credit so they are still going to make money. It all depends on the store's return policy. If they specifically state that you can't return books that have been read, but you lie and say it was a gift that you already had, then that would be dishonest. However, if they know you've read it or used it, etc. and still accept it back, then it's no problem because it is their decision. Most stores will give store credit. Some will buy the books back used for a percentage of what you originally paid for it. It all depends on the store. There is huge thread on Amazon dealing with this very issue if anyone wants to check it out. It's titled "Don't Burn It- Just Return It".
I think there are way too many fans who think that SM is their personal friend and that someone not liking her book or wanting to return it is like hurting the feelings of someone you actually know. It's kind of amusing how mad it seems to make fans of the book when they hear that someone didn't like it. I can see why some people liked it and that's fine- I'm not going to bash them or get into a fight with them over it. I'm content expressing my opinion here and other places and letting life go on.

message 55: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson Well there you have it. If the store agrees to accept it back, that's their business. They can resell the book, so they'll be fine.

Leslie The bookstore returns the books to the publisher. The publisher gets the message that the book wasn't what people expected. It's kind of a democratic way to deal--hit them in the pocket book. Don't worry about your local, small town book seller getting stuck with a huge bill or a bunch of returned books.

Sarah I think it is a petty thing to do....It is like demanding one's money back after watching a movie you disliked. I'd like to see someone try that at the theater :). ALSO I hope the stores are being honest and not selling returned books as new. I'd be pissed off if I bought a book I thought was new and it wasn't.

I loved Break Dawn! :P

Leslie I've gotten up in the middle of the movie and been given my money back....I didn't ask for it but said the movie was horrid! The girl just gave me my money back...Maybe I just live in an All-American kind of city where people care about customer service (like in Forks?).

Regarding the returning of books...I'm sure that the bookseller/book store states that the book was returned.

Sarah Uummm yeah, apparently you do because that would never happen here. As it really shouldn't, it is not the movie theaters fault that a movie studio put out a bad movie (the same goes for a book store).

message 60: by Liz (new) - rated it 1 star

Liz i'm surprised that book stores let you return used books. even if i had completely hated the book, i wouldn't return it. i still support stephenie meyer as an author, and think it is still important to pay her for her work. it can't be easy at all to be a newer author with a hugely successful three book series, to be faced with having to write an ending for the loved series.

message 61: by Ranata (new) - added it

Ranata Clark The bookstores do let you return books but I actually exchanged mine for something else. I had read up to 50 pages when I got bored and decided it wasn't worth it to finish. Then I read the spoilers and reviews and I knew I did the right thing. Renesme's introduction was all I needed to hear to persuade me to return it.

As long as the book is decent looking and you have a receipt, you can return pretty much anything. I just exchanged and I had no receipt and Borders STILL let me do it.

Emily i think renesmes name is just fine better then a name everyone has

message 63: by PandaRanda (last edited Sep 03, 2008 04:07AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

PandaRanda Hahaha, Renesmee was a little bit ridiculous...but it's better than "Tolula Does The Hula From Hawaii" and "Bomb Shelter 69"...as some parents have called their kids over here in New Zealand...it's positively absurd. Poor kids.

...Not that this adds to the discussion about returning books in any way...=P

Oh well I will add then. xD Personally, I wouldn't return it even if I didn't like it. It still looks pleasing to the eye arranged with all the other black Stephenie Meyer books on my shelf =P And burning a book is so wasteful! No matter how ridiculous a book is, I would never condone such a dispicable act! All books are precious, and you're adding to global warming (which is non existant, but still! ACID RAIN THEN!). At least send it to be recycled, if you're going to go that far...then the paper could be used else where...like printing toilet paper or something. Although it's totally acceptable to return a book you didn't like...even if you did read it from cover to cover, although I would feel too guilty to do that myself...it doesn't seem right...like stealing music from the internet...oh wait...I do that, oops. Nevermind. =P

Samantha I don't believe that the characters are, as you all seem to think, "out of character." How can this be? Stephenie Meyer freaking invented this characters! She made them what they are! She knows every facet of their personalities because she created it! All of you who say they were "out of character" honest to goodness don't know what the heck you are talking about! I don't care how many freaking times you've read the books, you will never know the characters as well as Stephenie Meyer! So I think that you should all just SHUT UP! Okay, maybe not. I guess you are entitled to you opinions, but I still think this is true. If Stephenie Meyer thinks this stuff could happen, then it totally could! This is her universe that she created and she knows what's possible and impossible! And she said that some of the stuff from Breaking Dawn was from Forever Dawn(actually, kind of a lot if you go look at the Breaking Dawn FAQs on her website). There's the honeymoon, Bella still gets pregnant, Edward resorts to emergency vampirism after the birth, Jacob still imprints on Renesmee, and that whole thing with the Volturi and Alice leaving is there too. She wrote Forever Dawn before she knew that she would have this huge audience and would have a lot of people to please. She didn't know that there would be a Team Jacob and a Team Edward! Now tell me that the characters are "out of character!" What's wrong with a happy ending anyways? Who would you sacrifice to make the ending more satisfactory? Alice, or maybe Bella?

Leslie Since you asked, I'd sacrifice Jazz! I thought he was totally out of character in Breaking Dawn--esp. from who he was in Twilight. I can't imagine that she wrote those books back to back just when looking at him.

If we had to throw in another vampire to sacrifice, I'd let them take Rose.

For the record, I didn't return Breaking Dawn. I didn't actually buy it- because I just knew there would be something to disappoint me. Wow--it's like I'm psychic and should be in my own fantasy novel! Just kidding. But really, my neighborhood bookstore just sends the books that are returned back to the publisher. So, if you want a copy of Breaking Dawn, you probably won't be buying a used copy being sold as new.

PandaRanda Hmm...sacrificing someone like Jasper or Rosalie wouldn't really make that big of an impact...why kill someone off just for the heck of it? A significant death in a book is meant to have deep, emotional impact, if anyone, she should've killed off one of the big three. Sacrificing some random Cullen just to water down the happiness really is...lame. Personally, if someone had to die, I would've had Bella die...and Renesmee her legacy or something...but then Edward would die too...and wow that would suck. Maybe Edward would hang on for Renesmee's sake...probably not. At least you would know Jacob and Renesmee could be happy. =P But I wouldn't be happy, and I'm sure a lot more would be upset, plus I don't think Stephenie Meyer can hack it. Twilight would go from romance to tragedy novel. =(

Leslie I think by killing off a lesser character, there could still have been ramifications for the story. For instance, Alice and Esme would be impacted by Jasper's death (as would every one else in the vamp family). I'm really not for any one dying....would have preferred that one vampire half-breed not be born!

message 68: by Lori (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lori I think that if anyone would have gotten killed the story could never end. SM has made it quite clear that when one mate is killed, the other can't help but to seek revenge. Most all of these vampires are paired up. So the series, it would seem, would just go on forever and ever until everyone is killed.

message 69: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah I loved Jacob but personally would have been alright with SM killing off Jacob as long as it was done nobly. For example, defending Edward in the battle against teh Volturi or something like that. It would have been more appealing to me as a reader to see something like that happen than the way it all fizzled at the end.

Emily i really dont get u guys just because its diffrent doesnt mean its bad!!!! I loved it. especially renesma! this is myfavorite book in the twilight series.

message 71: by Rose (new)

Rose In case anyone cares, these books truly died with Twilight, everything beyond that has been extraneous, unnecessary, cliched, and trashy. Bella's character died as soon as she and Edward began to go out.

message 72: by Katherine (last edited Oct 13, 2008 02:17PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Katherine I couldn't agree with you, Sarah, any more. I think this book is trash anyway you look at it. I refuse to call it a book and I refuse to give it a spot on my bookshelf. The book was just plain bad. There's no other way to put it.

Sabrina I diagree with you because this book is definantly not trash. SM put her heart and soul into this book to make it the best she could. Calling it a piece of trash is an insult to SM. She tried to get it out before the pulication date. She is dealing with someone leaking her book Midnight Sun right now and she doesn't need this junk right now to top it all off.

Ya'll just proving what she thought all along. That we dont deserve her writing midnight sun.

message 74: by Ginna Marciel (last edited Oct 08, 2008 01:14PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ginna Marciel I liked all the books actually but after reading what you posted you kind of have a point. I agree with you, so does my friend. We still do like the series even after reading what you wrote but you still have a really good point of having a bad ending. We both expected them to kill the Volturi. SM built up so much suspense and excitement leading to there death than all of the building fell right into the garbage when they finally left the Cullens alone. It was a waste to get everyones hopes up so fast.

Though, SM did put a lot of her heart and soul into the book. But she did try to hard. She should have tried to relax a little instead of trying to finish the book so fast to where fans will be happy that the next book is out. I rather have her wait and make it a good book instead of her finishing it fast.

message 75: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson Sabrina - Meyer shouldn't be writing books because we deserve them or withholding them because we don't. We're not naughty children that she needs to punish or teach a lesson to. If she writes a book, it should be because she wants to. And if she doesn't want to, it isn't because of anything we do or say here.

Meyer herself says that she's aborting her book because it was leaked. It doesn't have anything to do with the negative feedback on a website. All authors who do as well as Meyer has receive negative feedback - there is ALWAYS going to be someone who doesn't like a book.

I agree with your opinion that the book isn't trash, but that's mainly because I don't think any book is trash. This wasn't a very good book, but it was a fun read and an enjoyable experience for a lot of people. Even those who hated it most vehemently can probably recognize that.

Ginna - I absolutely agree with you about Meyer trying to hard to please the fans. She should have given less thought to making fangirls happy and more to writing the story she wanted to tell, in my opinion. Such things as time and a perfect happy ending should have been less of a factor.

Laura I have to disagree that she wrote the book the fangirls wanted. When she finished Twilight she wrote a series of epilogues called Forever Dawn. (This was before Twilight was even published.) She has said that Reneesme was always a part of the storyline and so was Bella and Edward ending up together in a happy ending. She wrote the book she planned to write from the beginning which not everyone has loved - and that's OK.

message 77: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson Yeah, that's a good point, Laura. I guess what I'm thinking of is that I've heard a lot of people say "She was under so much pressure to make everyone happy!" and I don't feel like that should have been such a big factor. But it probably wasn't as much of one as people are making it out to be.

Leslie It's fine for her to say...this is the book I wanted to write, so I did (or something to that effect). We can choose to like it or not. I think she should be given more credit than to be treated like a baby and coddled because people were unhappy with the book. I can't imagine her wanting people to suck up to her or lie about what they felt. I agree that people shouldn't be mean in their constructive criticism, but--hey, I've heard people bash To Kill a Mockingbird, so it is to be expected! I'm sure her bulging bank account is more than enough comfort and protection from disgrunted fans!

Also, she could benefit from knowing what people thought!

Ginna Marciel *nods at Hellkat14's comment* mmhmm..

Oh by the way, she also did leave out a lot of the characters, like she did write in about them all but she barely talked about them. The book was mainly about Edward, Jacob, Bella and her baby. They could have atleast added in more Jasper time, or Emmett time. But still, thats not really the point but I am just saying that cause my friends were complaining about how they barely got any Jasper time in the book. In fact, I dont think Jasper even talked much in the book at all.

message 80: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson Ginna - yeah, I noticed that! In the parody I'm writing, I actually have Emmett comment that his only purpose in the story is to make sex jokes at Bella's expense.

message 81: by Kat (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kat Helgeson Alysha - not that I liked the book or anything, but Meyer brings up abortion and adultery as bad ideas that her heroine decides not to do. Are you offended that Meyer acknowledges the existence of these things? Because she's not advocating them.

message 82: by Nada (new) - rated it 1 star

Nada Disappointments with this book:

Renesmee

Too many new characters introduced

Bella's power-did not represent her at all. Throughout the series she is terrible at protecting others and can barely protect herself

Promising a battle and not delivering

And the meeting with that guy to get fake ID's

There are many other problems with this book that I am too lazy to list, but I do think the book was a waste of money.

message 83: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara The baby's name was probably the absolute worst part of the book. I loved the book and I made sure that I had a copy of all of them so that I could read them whenever I wanted to. And I do plan on re-reading them in the near future.

message 84: by Sabine (last edited Mar 18, 2009 07:12AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sabine I agree the baby name was bad, but if you look and see what many people name their kids, naming a baby after her two grandmas is not really that outrageous.

message 85: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara Good point.... I have heard of some pretty bad names out there and they could shorten it to something less atrocoius so that ends okay...

Diana hernández wasn't my favorite! It is much better Eclipse, also I am team Edward and Jacob i can´t decide.

And I think that is much better The host

message 87: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara What? The Host was awesome... what didn't you like about it? Was the passion too much? :)
