Leea | 1239 comments I thought 2013... But Wendy you should know :) I never go on DG's website... Oh man that's a long time

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Originally the rumor was 2013, but then Diana posted that The Exile would be out in 2010, LJG and the Scottish Prisoner out in 2011, and the 8th book out in 2012. She said that her fans may get lucky and get 1 fix each year, lol.

I could have that totally wrong though. It's all just rumor though, supposedly no release date has been decided on.

No where are they and what do they say?

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (late4thislate4that) The reviews really annoy me too. Mostly that Claire is a two timing whore.

message 12: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments They're terrible! There are some five star reviewers, but most people just don't get it at all. You should look it up and read some. It'll burn you up.

message 13: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Someone made this comment (in one of the reviews I think?) but it seems that people either love it or hate it - there is no in between, and it appears to get either 5 stars or 1 star. I LOVE Outlander and would give it 5 stars, but I can also see where some people are coming from who give it a lower rating (and their reasons why). Depending on what you're like the time travel, many sex scenes, beatings, rape, etc may seem a little weird/over the top/inappropriate etc!

Samantha | 141 comments Oh my GOD!!! That is horrible. I am so upset right now. Everyone I have met who has read this book is 100% in love with it.

Wow am I pissed off.

message 15: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments It is horrible.

I suppose that's my issue with the reviewers. They should go pick up a regular ole romance then. Because the facts were that beatings DID happen back then. I am a modern woman and I would castrate a man who tried to physically punish me, but this is the 21st century. Things were different back then, beliefs were different. I thought that DG handled it beautifully, even having Jamie make his promise that he would never do it again. It's crazy that people see it as inappropriate when it's correct for the times. To get an amazing book you have to show the good and the bad.

Grrrrr! I just get so angry thinking about it.

message 16: by Mairicat (new)

Mairicat | 53 comments I'm stupified at the bad reviews. DG is THE most incredible writer. How could anyone rate these books low just considering the writing, the history and the character development? They are easily the best books I have ever read and I have been a confirmed bookworm for 45 years. And really now women, how could anyone NOT LOVE AND ADORE JAMIE??

message 17: by Mairicat (new)

Mairicat | 53 comments I have a theory - are the bad reviews written by men who are jealous of Jamie?

message 18: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 39 comments Maircat you may be right or are some reviewers just dead set against anything that has a romance tag on it. I just don't understand how anyone could not see the quality in DG's writing. I just read Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and couldn't help comparing it less favourably with Outlander. She makes it so much easier to get involved with the characters and even the mundane bits of life are enthralling. While Stieg Laarsson's book seemed to get world wide acclaim and I did enjoy the tale it was almost like reading a newspaper article in comparison to DG's writing. I know it is a different genre but still that's my whingeing rant over with. You can't please everyone I suppose.

Lotte | 330 comments Having now read your various comments about reviews of the Outlander series in which you express your not understanding and annoyance about their contents, I'm wondering whether you also read reviews about cultural performances in your papers. My other great addiction being opera I more than once wonder whether the reviewer and I had attended the same performance. On the other hand having shared many performances in common, I could tell how I would have felt about the singers, productions and so on, even when I was not there to see and hear myself, just by knowing who has written the review. I hopw this sentence makes any sense! I simply wanted to point out that you have to know the reviewer from previous articles to be able to understand the criticism and compare it with your own tastes.

I think the opposite. I think the reviews are written by diehard romance readers (like the Cassie Edwards fans). I think that they pick up Outlander expecting it to be one of those light soft Romance books and they're turned off when they read the blunt realistic writing of Diana Gabaldon. If you expect perfect love, characters without flaws, and storylines that follow that one typical romance outline, then of course you would find Outlander hard to handle. Those men would never dare to raise their hand to the fiery woman in their bed, lol. And they would never ever have the male romantic lead get raped. Outlander breaks those boundaries.

I'm not slamming those story's. I read them occasionally. They're fun. But I think alot of people pick up Outlander and expect this (especially when some stores have them in the romance section) and get shocked by the brutal honesty of Outlander.

message 22: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 564 comments My friend Wendy is right! Exactly. Outlander series is not for the faint of heart. As DG stated the first Outlander book was mistakenly categorized as "Romance" while it's actually not. So for most of the romance readers who’re looking for puffy-feel-good romantic stories, this series is not for them. This is bigger than that it is an “EPIC” adventure of Jamie and Claire.

And yes "the brutal honesty" of Outlander shocked most people -- the homosexuality, the rapes and so on -- those were real and (almost) common in those days. (You can see them in many of the period movies such as "Gladiator" which won so many awards including many of the Oscars.)

I read anything in every category but when I write reviews and give rating, I don’t look at other people’s reviews. Also, I rate the books as “I think” they belong not where they’re labeled. And to me DG is my #1 most favorite author of all times!!

Mary G. (nonometoo) | 319 comments Wendy, I think you may be on to something. This series really defies being put into a catagory. I think that's why I'm drawn to it. It doesn't follow the same old formula and treats the reader as though they have a brain. It presents characters with realistic relationships-warts and all. I'm constantly amazed with the range of emotion one feels reading or listening. Also, these reviewers usually only read the books once and quickly at that. From experience I know it's hard to get the full flavor and depth of this series in just one read.

message 24: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Especially if you go into it with preconceived notions about what it's supposed to be about.

message 25: by Shay (new)

Shay (shaylyn318) I will admit when I first read Outlander I wonder the F was wrong with people loving and praising this series and that book. The beating made me hate Jamie. Yes I know it was common in those time but reading that in a book. I almost quit reading. And then when they got back to the castle and fought over Laoghaire and then had rough sex. She told Jamie he was hurting her but he didn't care and kept going. Then I read spoiler about the rape so I wasn't as shocked about that. It sucks that Jamie had to go through all that. *tear* By the time the witch trial started I was getting into it again. Jamie redeemed himself saving Claire, believing her and taking her back to the stones.

message 26: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments It's just interresting how people see it. I never thought he had a reason to redeem himself. Even when I read it as a kid. Jamie just was who he was. Like Claire said, he gave her justice the way he knew it, the way he got it. I imagined that women back them could be, and were, brutalized. Look at Maisri, the Psychic. Jamie did what he thought was right at the time, and when Claire and him talked about it later he swore to never touch her like that again. And he didn't.

As far as the rough sex. That was one of my favorite scenes. The passion and fire between them... and Claire gave as good as she got.

But I'm glad that you still kept with the series, it's so wonderful.

message 27: by Shay (new)

Shay (shaylyn318) He had to redeem himself to me. Not redeem himself as a character. It was hard reading that, glad she didn't go into detail during that part, not sure if I would have made it through the book then. I did say I know it was the normal thing to do in that time. And yeah he has kept his promise to never do it again even when she wanted him too.

message 28: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Ah, I get ya. I thought you meant redeeming himself overall.
