http://www.goodreads.com/challenges/2...

So ya pretty much just set a number of books you'd like to read this year and it'll record your progress so long as you keep up with maintaining your book list! Might be something fun to do with it being the new year and all.

If ya want you can use this thread to talk about your progress in the challenge or anything else related to it.

I'm gunning for 50 books even though I know I'll never make it. I get so distracted at times. >_< Although a 1/5 of them will be dedicated to the club, so that's a start.

I doubt it counts if when you reread a book. And that's usually half of my yearly reading. Hmm I'll ahave to try and decide how many books I want to challenge myself to read

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
Well, if ya change the read date to when you finish it the second time it should count. =]

message 4: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I signed up for a modest 26. I think I can manage that.

message 5: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Stabile (keasbeyknight) | 56 comments Pulling for 10...pathetic yes, but for me thats 10 more I've read since the last Harry Potter novel came out (except for the first 2 novels of A Song of Ice and Fire I finished last year)

message 6: by TheThirdLie, Houdini Mod (new)

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
There's nothing pathetic about 10. If that's what you think you'll read, then that's fine. Especially when you're reading huge, epic fantasies.

26 is a pretty good number too... 2 a month and then an extra two here or there. That's pretty much what I did as well. =]

200.

The apartment is completely trashed and being re-done so there are absolute stacks of books waiting to be reorganized and fondled lovingly.

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
O.O

That's a lot of books! Hope ya can do it. Course if the books are there and waiting to be read... you must oblige them. =]

Katt_goddess | 269 comments I've always aimed way too high with book reading challenges. Just ask my old book-mobile librarian. :D Always fear the 8-year-old with a tote bag bigger than they are and their own library card.

I've been getting really tired really easily lately to the point where I'm only active on the internet for a little bit at a time. Instead, I end up curled up in the recliner with a book resting when I'm not at work or online.

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
Ah, you've been a reader all your life!

I wasn't much of a reader as a kid... which means I'm terribly behind on a lot of stuff.

message 11: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I used to get a lot of use out of my library card too Katt. It was one of my first possessions. I got it as soon as I could print my own name. If I truly tried to list here all the books I've read I could spend a week on just that. And I've forgotten most of them. :)

And I'm only missing out probably at most... 10-15. :(

Why did I start reading so late? Whyyy?

message 13: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments to JK - I had started reading on my own before I even started kindergarten. :D While everyone else was playing in the sandbox or playing house during indoor recess, I was in the book corner making the teacher uncomfortable.

to Mary - I got my first card for the book-mobile in kindergarten too. I think I might still have it in storage somewhere. Old paper with a metal bar attached - old school card. :D

Oh wow. That's pretty awesome. I should have gotten into reading a bit more and a little less into games. I've enjoyed games a great deal and there are some amazing stories, but not quite as often as there are in books.

I upped my number of books to 61. I've read four already so I think it's not a bad goal. I'll probably make it with no problem. The reason I upped it to this is because it would have me sitting at 200 books read. At least 200 listed books read.

Okay I finally decided on a number to submit. My goal is 35, which I should be able to do pretty easily if I dont get side tracked. for some reason instead of reading I've been being a slug and watching t.v. of all things *shudders* I think most of it is due to the fact that every time i have a moment of peace to read in this house i get interrupted and I haaate that. So i haven't wanted to start reading till everyone goes to bed, which is usually around midnight, and by that point im past the point of wanting to read. Its a very sad cycle. Plus I ran into a few books that for some reason I just cant seem to finish. You know the kind, that sound really good, and start off decent but you sit them down cause you have a busy few days and then just cant get back into the rhythm of the book.

But I have several books that are screaming to be read. Nearly half of my 35 are books that I either already own, or have downloaded waiting to be read. If I could just have a week or two to myself I could so read the 15 books I have waiting. Lets just hope I get out of this non-reading slump.

I know exactly how that feels. I'm kind of in that right now. I liked the first book of the series despite the author repeating himself a lot and having large sections of the novel that could have just been omitted. Sadly he's doing the same in this one as well. I was going pretty good with getting books read, but this one is just taking too much time. I can't imagine having to manage that around a family too. >_<

Looks like you need a "sick" day. :D

What series are you reading right now?

Well... I hear a stomach flu can really knock a person out of commission. ;)

Sixty-One Nails by Mike Shevdon... it's reminiscent of Neil Geiman's Neverwhere novel if you've ever read that. It's a much more toned down urban fantasy series.

message 19: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments So bumping this in the spirit of board liveliness.

I'm 20-something officially done in my goal of 200.
Still rocking the belief that I'll rocket to that goal and then some [I go through reading spurts].

Anyone reached their goal yet? Or maybe forgot about this? :D

well i didn't decide to even take the challenge until last month so I started off behind. lol. Still working towards goal. Set an easy goal & will increase if needed. :)

message 21: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I've almost hit my goal so I'll raise it eventually. I've got 22 of 26. I didn't know I'd have the time to read all those books so soon. I doubt I'll be able to keep up the pace for the whole year though. July's going to be short of time I think.

message 22: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
I've been keeping on track for the most part, sometimes being a book or two ahead of paces while now I'm a book behind. But that's because I had been in a reading rut trying to make myself read either for the club or cause I checked out a book in the library but didn't want to finish it but forcing myself too. So I took a bit of break and reread two book I know I would enjoy the reading the follow up books to them which I hadn't done yet. I would've been done with that whim except one book was Kushiels Dart which is nearly 1000 pages in paperback form and let's face it no matter how good a story or fast a reader a book that size takes several days to read. I am now in the middle of Kushiels Chosen and its a worthy successor to Kushiels Dart. After that I don't know what I'll read if it will be the third book in that series or if I'll take a break from throne games and read a fun silly type of book.

For the first quarter of the year I was waaaaaaaay ahead of my goal. I was reading a few books a week. Now that I'm working again I've just not had the time to read as much so I'm keeping on pace (according to goodreads). I've also been playing more games than I did earlier in the year, but lately I've been cutting that back to make time to read.

I'm still behind. dang. oh well, I am catching up though, so that's good. :)

message 25: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments I'm 34% behind schedule. :D

But it's also fry-an-egg-on-sidewalk temps out for the whole week. I'm thinking of penciling in a long bout of book diving Thursday in front of a fan after sleeping in in front of a fan. :P

I think that is a good idea. You can also post online in front of a fan. or sweat less in front of a fan.

If you go back to those books and hit 'edit review' you can,set when the book was read. That'll make it show up for the challenge.

message 31: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
I actually did make it, but I felt like I cheated a tad because a few of them were short stories that might have been 75 pages each.

I had the dates on them. Looks like they finally showed up a couple of days later. weird.

message 33: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
yeah that happened to me, but they usually showed up after I logged out and logged back in.

So is anyone going to do the 2012 challenge? I haven't decided yet or not. At times it made me feel like I had to read in order to meet my goal and Im not that great at reading when I feel forced to read. But I would like to do it just to actually see how many books I read a year.(Im thinking of counting the books I reread as well with this challenge if I participate.) Half the books I read at times is me just rereading some of my fave books. This year was just straight new books that I counted.

message 34: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments I felt like I cheated the last couple of books because I marked them as read before I had finished them. -.-; But that was because I really didn't feel like sitting online in the cold until I had officially closed the last book in time for the deadline so I clicked them 'read' , logged out and curled up in bed with the comforter and the kitty to finish them. My eyeballs hurt now.

I think I'll still go for the next challenge but I'll make it my personal challenge to meet it by August instead of putzing around until the last month. :D

message 35: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
How many books are you going to challenge yourself to this year? My goal is probably to read all the books I have stacked around me before I go out and buy any more. First I have to count all my unread stuff so I have a base number to start with.

message 36: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
Holy crap I have 38 books either in my possession, in my kindle, or already ordered......needless to say I probably don't need to buy any more books for awhile. Yet I still have nearly 60 dollars left on a gift card to Amazon, and 30 to B&N. Which I know I'm probably going to spend tomorrow.

But more on topic I set my goal again to be 50 books since 2/3 of that will be what I already have. I will probably up that once I see how well I stick to reading only what I already own on top of our book of the month.

Nora aka Diva (DuctTapeDiva) | 391 comments Mod
I set my goal at 75 books, 14 more than I read last year. just seemed like a nice goal.

message 38: by Mary (new)

Mary (med401) | 234 comments I made 50 last year so I think I'll try for the same this year. Does it count for this year if I started the book in 2011 and end it in 2012? I guess I'll find out with Contagious.

I did read some simple kids books last year as prereads for my nephews. I'll have to try a little harder this year to make the goal; I'll be reading mostly adult books.

message 39: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
I was thinkin of doing 75 but at times I felt so rushed to read 50 I don't want to do that again. I know I can read 50 so maybe I'll actually read more if I don't feel like I have to. (A lil reversing psychology to keep the reading funks away.)

message 40: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments 225...I probably have that amount alone in the bedroom shelves.

But my better goal is to have the bulk of that done by fall so I'm not reading myself blind in the last month. :D

I have no problem re-reading a book and having it count unless it's like a LOLCats book that I just read in the last week :D - not counting anything that I've read within the last 6-8 months because that just feels like padding the counts. But I'm re-reading my Pern and Valdemar books and plenty of those I have read at some point in time.

message 41: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
Yeah I probably won't count something I read in the last year sp that goes some of my rereads. Mainly cause there are at least a handful of books that I read once a year. I'm definitely upping my count cause at the rate I'm going, especially if I keep reading tons of manga.

message 42: by TheThirdLie, Houdini Mod (new)

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
I think rereading counts. If I reread anything, I'll certainly add it. I set my goal lower this year to 50 and may even lower it to 36. Gaming kept me frm reading as much at the end of the year (i have over 200 hours in just 2 games from the fall) and there are plenty of good releases this year too. Plus I've been going to the gym the past couple months and that eats away my time a bit. Though I have listened to audio books while working out... so maybe that's not a huge distraction.

message 43: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
Well I up'd my count to 75 cause the other day I went to the book store and read like 7 volumes of manga. So now my total count so far for this year is already at 12 books. I don't want to up it any more than that cause I know I'll slow down my reading, I've just been on kick lately.

message 44: by TheThirdLie, Houdini Mod (new)

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
For some reason I can't count comics towards my number of books read. I would have easuly made last year's challenge if I did. Not sure why I keep them apart... pictures don't lessen the stories or time put into them. Hrm.

message 45: by Katt_goddess (new)

Katt_goddess | 269 comments I don't count comics or magazines [like Shonen Jump although I wish that were possible because I'd hit my goal in a couple of weeks like that :D ] but I do count mangas. They attract me like a book so they must be books [at least to me. :D ].

On the other hand, if they came out as weekly chapbooks, I wouldn't be able to count them because they wouldn't have book-feel.

message 46: by Dian, Crazy Nooooob Mod! :D (new)

Dian | 440 comments Mod
Yeah at first I wasn't going to count manga either but then I figured if GoodReads counts a volume of manga as a book then I will too.

message 47: by TheThirdLie, Houdini Mod (new)

TheThirdLie | 704 comments Mod
I've done much better this year with the challenge... I'm two books away from being finished. Almost done with the current book I'm on too... well... at 65% done.

I didn't count comics before, but I am now counting trades and the like. Just not single issues... that would make the challenge go by far too fast. :D
