Scot | 2 comments This story was read to my class when I was in elementary school (3rd thru 5th grades I believe). This would have been around 1985-87. I don't remember much at all except that there were at least a couple of children in the story...settlers in the West. They were attacked in one scene and one of the settlers was partially scalped by a Native American. The victim survived and later (possibly while they were trying to get back to a populated area for help) the injury became infected. I remember this because the description of the infection stuck with me...details of the smell and discoloration of the infected scalp. I believe the victim or someone with them had to cut away some of the infected area as well. That's all I remember...hope it's enough! Thanks!

Jessica (jessdaygeorge) | 191 comments Is it Save Queen of Sheba by Louise Moeri? The older brother's name is King David, he's partially scalped, and yes it becomes infected, and then he pretty much scalps himself to get rid of the infected part. I read it in fifty grade, too, and nearly threw up! :) The kids are traveling west with their parents, who go ahead with part of the wagon train, while the kids stay back (supposedly safer) and they are attacked and only King David and Queen of Sheba (his little sister) survive.

Scot | 2 comments Wow--that's it! I hadn't thought of this book in years, and it just popped into my head (maybe after watching True Grit?) recently. Thank you SO VERY much, Jessica! Now I need to track down a copy and read it again. Thanks again for your quick and accurate response!
