Kyle T (kyletee) | 108 comments I work somewhere quiet but with the radip playing in the background. I usually am in someplace comfortable like my bed or on the couch, and I type of my new laptop that I got for christmas :):)

I was wondering...who prefers to type and who prefers to write everything out?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

i write everywhere. ill write at church, in my room, under my bed, in the livingroom, in the bathroom(dont ask), the car, the floor, a resuraunt, anywhere really

AnnaRose (book-thief) | 32 comments For me its hard to write in certain places...... I do my best when im writing in a peaceful quiet enviremont, such as in my room on my desk. As for typing, i find it a little easier to write everything out, and its so much easier just to bring a notebook around. The only problem with writing it down is that when im finished i have to type it all down anyways because my writing is so sloppy. :D

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

It depends. If I need to focus I go into my study at school or to the library. Otherwise I'm in my room at school (or at home) listening to music while writing.

Oddly, I tend to read when I'm watching TV haha.

I tend to outline everything intensely by hand before I start writing. Meanwhile, I tend to type everything up more. Although, if I have writer's block I write out several scenes by hand. Something about the movement of my hand on paper has always helped out a little. ((that or blurbs on Tumblr haha))

message 6: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Usually on my computer with some nice Jim Brickman or Yiruma playing. But if I'm really involved in what I'm currently on and I can't stop thinking about it - Anywhere and everywhere.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

This is almost random but I work through ideas (without writing them down) in the shower. Please tell me I'm not the only one. haha. Once I had an hour long convo about this on the other writing site I'm on.

Just something about brainstorming in the shower makes everything perfect.

message 8: by Kristen (new)

Kristen When I read that at first I missed the 'without', I was like, Wow! lol
But no, I do that too. I get very obsessive sometimes and have conversations running through my head wherever I am.

That would be pretty damn impressive. Imagine the interviews, yeah I wrote my novel while in the shower. Yup.

Kristen LOL

message 11: by Maria (new)

Maria Hammarblad (mariahammarblad) | 9 comments Interesting question. I don't write in the shower, hehe, but often in front of the TV. I'm not really interested in TV, but my boyfriend loves it, and I want to at least try to keep him company. (I'm an asocial pain in the behind when I get going!)

I do a lot of writing on my computer and some sitting in the yard, scrabbling in a notebook or on any piece of paper. Just as much is, however, done in weird places. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and start writing entire chapters on my iPod. (At least half of "Kidnapped" is written on the iPod.)

Sometimes things come to me when I walk the dog, and I try to write on my phone when walking along the street. Much to the neighbours' amusement, I'm sure.

Ideas and dialogue often come to me in the car, and I'll have to pull over and start writing on whatever's there; usually my phone. Now when I think about it, I write a lot in the car.

Sometimes, when I get stuck in whatever I'm working on, I need to change location or what I'm writing on/with, and the words start flowing again. :)

message 12: by Shep (last edited Jan 05, 2011 07:09AM) (new)

Shep Usually I write on the computer, for I find that my writing is better there and it is easier to fix and edit. Plus, built in spell-check, dictionary, and thesaurus, which totally help.

I write on my PC, because thats the only one I have the password to. I know, lame. I wish I had the password to the laptop because I'd love to write in my bed or on the couch. But no, Im in the dark little corner of my living room with a tiny little lamp-hunched over in a wicker chair. Not the best conditions, but I've gotten used to it. Hopefully, sometime soon, I'll AT LEAST get a better chair lol.

Sometimes ideas or sentences/paragraphs come to me randomly, and I have learned that it is best to write them down RIGHT AWAY or I'll end up forgetting it very soon. Then I'm like, "DARN, wasted genius!" haha! :)

I've written random stuff in my phone, notebooks, and in the My Ideas document I have on Microsoft Word. Overall I prefer the computer.

This may seem weird, but I have a phone that has a full out QWERTY Keyboard just like a computer, and I've become a super fast texter. The weird and kinda cool part is that since I've mastered my phone's keyboard, I am now significantly faster at typing on a real computer keyboard! I am much more familiar with the letter and number placement and can usually type most of what I write without looking! (couldn't do that before!)

message 13: by Kyle (new)

Kyle T (kyletee) | 108 comments Lol texting does help if you have aQWERTY keyboard

I gor faster at typing after my first year of nanowrimo!

Zaira's Bookshelf (zairasbookshelf) SCHOOL! Or anything that's boring me. I've found that it is impossible to write at home or when I'm comfortable.

REALLY?! That's interesting

message 16: by Shep (new)

Shep I!

message 17: by Kyle (new)

Kyle T (kyletee) | 108 comments I! It's just is cleaner and easier to go back and edit later

message 18: by Quackyduck (new)

Quackyduck (quackyduck) I tend to start my stories with jot notes during class, since I don't tend to pay attention :(. Then during lunch I run in up with my friends to see if my idea sounds absurd, before I sit in front of the computer and begin my quest story.

message 19: by Redwallcrazy (new)

Redwallcrazy (redwallcrazybigkotfan) | 5 comments In my room.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

In front of the tv with the cat curled up next to me on the couch.. usually I have dumb cartoons on in the background, but once I get in the zone I don't pay attention to what's on or not.

message 21: by Julia (last edited Mar 10, 2011 07:20AM) (new)

Julia Destiny Radway | 4 comments I work where ever I can. At school, at home in my room with a cup of tea, at a park or playground. When ever the urge to write strikes me I guess.

message 22: by Julia (new)

Julia Destiny Radway | 4 comments Ingrid wrote: "I try not to work at school since my friends like to snoop on my writing. Please, don't ever invade a writer's space! :D"

I guess i'm lucky. My friends don't dare to snoop on what i'm writing. I've made it very clear in the past that snooping equals broken bones. lol.

message 23: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments I've written in lots of places. I took part in the International 3-day Novel contest, and I even wrote in the bathtub (on laptop). I've written in a journal before, and I like it cause it's portable, but then I want to type it up to revise it, and then I get tired of typing something I've already written. It just feels like I'm repeating myself. So, to save time, I just write in my laptop, usually in my living room. But, I think about writing everywhere. What my characters are like, what should happen- sometimes I think of scenes. Writing is my favourite obsession. :)

message 24: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments Since I have 0 cell phones, I can't take notes on one. I don't really like jotting either- I either type it up, or just keep track of it in my head. (If I can manage!)

message 25: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments I usually just type it up, unless I forget. Sometimes, even if I type it up, it still gets all jumble-y. I just can't get in to journal using. Been there done that.

message 26: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments Yeah- I've found that happens to me too. I think I've gotten better at writing, cause I used to get stuck for months, and the answers just never came. Now, I get stuck, and like 5 seconds later I get the answer. I still like having some notes,, though, so I don't get completely off course.

message 27: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments :) Definitely!

message 28: by Bets (new)

Bets (betsdavies) | 85 comments Write both in laptop and in notebooks. Notebooks for development so they are handy at my elbow when I work. I need chaos in order to focus. I write a bit of everywhere. In the living room in a recliner. In my office. At a coffee shop. With a dog on my lap. with the tv on. with music on. with the parrot screaming. In the backyard. Phone is a good idea. I usually just carry a small notebook.

message 29: by 1luvbooks (new)

1luvbooks | 43 comments Anywhere...

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

message 32: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) | 2500 comments I try to write everyday and normally in my room. If I can't write in the house because it isn't peacfull enough I go outside or up to the barn. I write whenever I have an idea too.

message 33: by Haley (new)

Haley | 46 comments I usually write with a notebook and pen. I imagine it all out in my head, and then I try to remember later when I write it down. I need to write as I think of things, because I forget a lot.

message 34: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) | 2500 comments Hey, me too!

message 36: by Theaftermath (new)

Theaftermath | 51 comments I mostly work either downstairs in the second living room or upstairs in my room. It totally depends on my mood.

message 37: by Christian (new)

Christian (christianareas) | 3 comments I have two cafes I frequent, one in Berkeley, one in SF. I also like writing at home, in bed, or on the couch in the living room (so long as it's not to messy). Sometimes I write at work, but don't tell my boss!

message 38: by Theaftermath (new)

Theaftermath | 51 comments Ingrid wrote: "oh. well what if you were cranky?"

I'd mostly be up here if I were.

message 40: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Geaney (michellegeaney) I work at my antique writers desk.... saved and bought this year. Its home to my computer and lots of junk at the moment but ill be clearing it again. I often write notes into my Smartphone as well if im on the go. I'm very traditional though so i prefer to write on paper. Though I do agree with those of you who find revising written notes painful so the computer works just as well.

message 41: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) | 2500 comments The only place i jot notes on the go is on my nook or on my hand.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I write where I am right now -- at my desk, but i have a funny system for it. when I write the first draft of my story, I don't start until i have the entire plot worked out in my head. then when I start i write it out on paper. when its completely done, i type it into my computer. then I edit.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

It keeps me from giving up on my story

message 44: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) | 2500 comments Yes, if i have a pen and nothing else (as long as it is not obious or i have to be somewhere important).

@M.: I like your system.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

most of the time i just work on getting it down on paper. otherwise, i always get distracted

message 46: by Irene (new)

Irene (wingdesilverii) | 2500 comments Yeah, same here.

Sarah Weldon (sarahrweldon-author) | 6045 comments M. wrote: "most of the time i just work on getting it down on paper. otherwise, i always get distracted"

Ingrid wrote: "same here"

I like to plan my story out in a notebook briefly, I leave a couple of pages for my list of characters and useful information about them, like their hair colour dob etc., who they are attached to and why. I always write my synopsis first, though sometimes I do deviate from it, it isn't written in stone. I change it to suit at the end! I keep an air of mystery that way!

message 48: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 13, 2011 10:37AM) (new)

I do a little bit of that too -- stuff like a list of characters and a bit about them/what happens to them

message 49: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Weldon (sarahrweldon-author) | 6045 comments M. wrote: "I do a little bit of that too -- stuff like a list of characters and a bit about them/what happens to them"

It helps me relate to my characters, helps bring them to life in my head. I use numerology too, I pick a name and then I do a numerolgy reading on it, and then I decide if this person is my character, it has worked really well so far.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

that sounds like a really good idea!
