Very impressive. I have to ask..when do you sleep? LOL.

I read very fast. If I'm not disturbed, I could usually read a standard mystery novel in 2-3 hours. Of course, I can't read something like a Charles Dicken's novel at the same rate (words per minute).

Ahhh.. That is the key....I can read about that quickly too, but I don't have that much undisturbed time. Still, very impressive. You have good taste in books, too, I might add.

It's good to see everyone still fairly motivated in meeting their goals. I imagine we'll need this thread more to cheer each other on as the year goes by. I envy those who can read a book a day, and often wish I were a faster reader--but then, I also wonder how much of the story people retain when reading at that pace.

I retain most of the important things that I read. I've gone back and taken GR quizzes months after reading the books and can answer the questions. Probably my memory is "worse" on fluff reads because, to me, the point is escapism. But, I retain information well- graduated with a double major in a shade under 3 years- 22+ units a semester was easy. My master's took a little over a year. I've read over 2,000 pages a day well enough to write papers and ace all of my tests.

Melodie, I assumed that too. lol. I work, go to school, and sleep, so my goal is a little smaller....

I don't really work as most people would define work. I only put in about 5-6 full days a month. Not even really a full day, I think, more like 5-6 hours. Other than that maybe an hour or two a day scattered here and there, mostly from home. I really detest working, I find nothing at all interesting or desirable about work. It's an interference with my real life, but a necessary one I grudginly do.

I hear that, LOL! I hate trudging off to the day job a few days a week but, sadly, I really could use a few more hours than I've been getting. Either that or a fat lottery win.

message 60: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm at about 39 out of 200-I'm a fast reader but my job takes a lot of my energy (special education teacher) & my kids. I find myself begrudging the energy my job takes away from my reading more and more as I get older & have less energy. For the first time, I'm beginning to think of retirement so I'll have time & energy to really read again!

message 61: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I'm stalled at 28 of 184, I think. Since I had my hip replaced on the 21st I've only finished one book! I was a bit preoccupied the week before that and didn't get any reading done in the hospital. Got several books this week that I had preordered awhile back and looks like I'll be reading the new Joanne Fluke as I got a copy as a gift while I was in the hospital.

message 65: by Kaye (new)

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments I think that's normal, Melodie. When I had my cancer surgery last Oct, I don't think I picked up a book for at least a week after I got home. Couldn't focus or concentrate either. I hope you feel better soon and every day you get better and better.

message 66: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Thanks so much for all the good wishes! I am doing really well and progress has been better than we'd dared to hope! Think I'll try to get into the Hannah Swensen book this evening!

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments Best of luck to you and feel better soon Melodie!

message 68: by Dian (new)

Dian Macnichol | 28 comments Melodie, wishing you a speedy recovery, I've had both hips and one knee replaced..holding on to the last knee but soon that too will be replaced. Only time any of the replacements bother me is going through airport security :)

message 69: by Joy (new)

Joy Gerbode (wingsofjoy) I had set a reading goal for myself before I ever joined GR ... so my goal is 100 books for the year. I have read 46 as of this morning, so I'm ahead of schedule, and enjoying all the reading! Lots of great books out there, never enough time to read them all.

Wow, way to be out ahead of your goal, Joy!

I am currently 34 for 100, three books ahead of my goal according to that nice little meter.

How is everyone else doing on their goals?

I had originally put my number at 184, but cut it back in February to 165 as it wasn't a good month for me. I'm thinking about putting it back up to 184. I think I'm at 59 books right now, and should finish up the other 2 I'm reading by Saturday.

message 72: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments My initial number was 20 but I finally increased to 52. I have read 36 so far and that darn GoodReads keeps telling me to increase! LOL We'll see when I hit 45.

message 73: by Paula (new)

Paula | 104 comments I'm 8 books ahead so far. I think I'll leave it where it is in case I read some really fat books. : )

message 74: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments I think I am about 5 behind!!! I have to step it up next month!

Come on Caitlin -- you can do it! : )

Karen: I was hesitant at first to set a goal of 100, even though I read 104 last year. To be honest, I'm a little surprised I've been able to keep a steady pace. I've managed 8 or 9 books every month so far. I have a few longer books planned for May and June, so we'll see how it goes.

message 76: by ❂ Murder by Death (last edited Apr 27, 2011 08:22PM) (new)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I'm currently at 66 out of 100, 34 books ahead of schedule according to GR. It's encouraging me to increase my goal as well. I figured I'd wait to decide what to increase it to when I hit 95/100 or July 1, whichever comes first. :D

(I think being out of commission with the flu for two weeks helped boost my progress.)

message 77: by Kim (last edited Apr 27, 2011 08:49PM) (new)

Kim (catmommie) I'm the opposite - I've had a nasty sinus infection since Thursday and haven't been able to read much. Probably from the medication, the coughing, sleeping when I'm not coughing, and the sinus pressure - my eyes hurt! Tonight was the first time since over the weekend.

I usually only read up to four books a month, but lately I've had some chunksters, so my average was down. You guys make me feel like a weakling with my goal of 36 to 40! The computer gets in the way - I was never like this before they came into being!

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27540 comments Mod
Kim: Even 40 books a year is far above the average American, so be proud in the number of books you do read! There's no race here, though it does help keep you motivated and on track when checking in regularly with others, as we do in this thread. Everyone reads at a different pace and has different things going on in their lives, so just keep doing what you're doing. *grin*

message 79: by Marisa, Cozy Mysteries Assistant Moderator (new)

Marisa (moretta) | 4153 comments Mod
In my case, I set a goal of 200. I'm in track, but I'm not sure if I can continue in the same way. In any case, it's not something I'm very pressed.

message 80: by Joy (new)

Joy Gerbode (wingsofjoy) Setting a goal has really helped me focus on reading ... WAY more than reading than watching tv this year, and I've cut down my time on facebook (though admittedly, GR has taken up some of that time). Anyway, to everyone who has a reading goal, good work! Reading is absolutely the BEST addiction!

message 81: by Sue (new)

Sue (suetinge) | 622 comments I'm at 77 of 150 - 19% ahead of schedule. I've already upped my goal once, don't know if I'll do it again.

Shay | 408 comments Sue T wrote: "I'm at 77 of 150 - 19% ahead of schedule. I've already upped my goal once, don't know if I'll do it again."

My worst time of year is during the holidays- November and December. So, I don't want to increase my goal thinking I can maintain the pace all year. I think I need the beginning of the year, when I'm ahead of schedule, to balance out the end of the year. My goal is 375 and I've read 133 books so far.

message 83: by Silver (new)

Silver (silvercade) | 5 comments I almost feel like a cheat doing this challenge. I set my goal at 140 (I started late) and so far I'm pretty much just staying on track. Once we get past this really busy season at work and I finish moving (ugh!) I'll probably get ahead. I couldn't live without reading.

message 84: by Nell (new)

Nell | 1225 comments According to the GR meter, I am 4 books ahead of my goal - reading 72 books. I am not going to increase my goal because it's good to know that there is at least one area of my life where I am ahead of the goal. Also, there are some 'chunky' books that I am planning to read this year so I expect my pace to slow down.

message 85: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Congrats Nell. One of my goals for this year is to read 52 books. I'm already half way there. I'll have ti increase my goal next year. In a different goal I'm supposed to read 14 books that I had to list to read for the year. I've only read 2. :(

message 86: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I started at 200 and got so far ahead I upped it to 300. Funny thing is, 200 is a good deal more than I've done in the past. But one of my reading goals this year was to read a bunch of the hundreds of plays I have sitting around the house and those don't take long.

message 87: by Heather L , Cozy Mysteries Moderator (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) | 27540 comments Mod
Congrats Nell and Jennifer on being so far ahead of your goals!

message 88: by Donna (new)

Donna | 27 comments I've read 40 of my goal of 100 books. The counter says that I'm 7 books ahead of my goal. Yesterday it said I was 8 books ahead; I guess I should have read another book overnight to stay 8 books ahead! LOL

message 89: by Kimmie (new)

Kimmie (thatkimmiegirl) | 100 comments I've read 70 of my goal of 125 books. I know I won't be able to keep up this pace because my schedule is gong to change soon. This is the first time I have kept track of my annual reads. It is motivating to see that little counter go up :-)
-Kimmie

message 90: by Karendenice (new)

Karen: ROFL... Yeah, but when did you sign up?

message 92: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Earlier this week.

message 93: by Karen (new)

Karen I signed up for this even though we are already almost halfway through the year. I am at above 50% by how many I set. Exciting,

message 94: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I'm about 15 books ahead at this point for the number I set. I will probably up the number.

message 95: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm 16 books ahead of schedule (7%)- 96 books out of 200. I'm not adding any more because I'm making much slower progress in my group challenge read of 12-just 2 (I think) + 1/2 so far. I want to concentrate on those as much as possible. I'm going to try a different kind of challenge next year: not a number one, I think. Maybe one of those "reading your name" or "reading across the country" or something like that. Something with less emphasis on just speed.

message 96: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Congratulations, Karen. Go for it!

I am currently on book 45 towards my goal of 100, three books ahead of where I should be. Yay! I have a number of longer books lined up for the next couple of months, so this comfortable lead may come in handy, lol.

message 98: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 232 comments Well I'm a late starter but still think I will be able to make it to 100 provided I remember to add things when I complete them! *LOL*

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I have a question for everyone: Does anyone know if GR counts first reads only or if you re-read a book is it counting that? I've been on a spree of re-reads the last week or so and I haven't even been entering them in GR since I was thinking they don't really count. But then I got to thinking so I thought I'd ask here if anyone knows?

message 100: by Marisa, Cozy Mysteries Assistant Moderator (new)

Marisa (moretta) | 4153 comments Mod
No, Goodreads doesn't count re-read. If you want to include them, you have to choose another edition and set the new read date at that edition.
