I have had a nook for several months now and agree...for whatever reason I am devouring the e-books, specifically the Outlander series. I think maybe the portability of it. I have it in my purse everyday, so my lunch hour is alongside Jamie and Claire. I had hard copies up until FC and the rest are on my nook and ipad (via Nook app). I love my Nook! Kindle gets slightly better reviews, but not sure why. You're right, the books are a steal and I have already downloaded Outlander and plan to get DIA and Drums as well. I reread Outlander after downloading and did have it read much faster than the first time.
I jsut got the Nook for Christmas (non color as I was worried about the glare on the LCD screen-how is it?). I have already read the entire series, but just had to buy Outlander on my Nook to glance at every now and then. Last night, I did download the audiobook of Outlander to my Nook and was able to listen on my car ride into work today. Now I can't wait to drive home, to listen again. It sure will make my fighting traffic less stressful.
I have the basic Nook as well. How did you download the audiobook ( to audio files I presume), bit how did u listen in ur car? I'm not much of a tech-saavy person, but do love my nook. Never tried audio books on it before! I was mad after the NookColor came out, thinking it was better, but the salesman said if u wanted the Nook to read novels, plain Nook was better, Nook color better for kids books. I have an ipad and have the Nook app downloaded, but rarely read on it, not a bad glare like a desktop, but not the eye-friendly e-ink either.
I am not tech savvy either, but it was actually quite easy. Since you can not download audiobooks directly from your Nook (you can from Kindle however), there are just a few basic steps you need to take.1) Go to B&N and buy an audiobook;
2) It did take about 15 hours before B&N sent me an email that said my audiobook was available for download;
3) B&N will have a step by step guide to download but basically, you will download a program to your computer-the link will be provided by B&N and this will take about 2-3 minutes;
4) Once you download the program, go to your B&N account and push the tab that says download your audio purchase (depending on the size of the book, this should take about 2-3 minutes as well). Outlander took about 6 because it is 37 hours of audio;
5) Once your book is downloaded on your computer, simply plug your Nook into your computer's USB port. Then go to your program that you downloaded, highlight your book, and then there is tab that says "Transfer". Click that and it will transfer your book to your Nook, or Ipod or whatever portable device you have plugged into your computer.
Trust me, if I can do it you can do. I was going to call my daughter's tech savvy boyfriend over to do it for me but gave it a go myself and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. Sorry for the long instructions. Good luck!
Oh yeah, to listen in my car. Your car has to have an audio output plug (which most cars now do). You would simply buy a cord (I don't know the proper name of the cord but a sale person at a electronics store will know if you explain it to them). The cord plugs into the car and then I plug it into my Nook (where the headphones would usually go) and then it plays through the speakers in my car. If you don't have an audioplug in your car, I know there are converters and the like. Just ask an electronic sales person and they will help you get the right cord.

I got the basic nook last year when it came out and I did like it, but I felt like I wasn't using it that much. Then when the Nook Color came out I decided I'd treat myself and get one (I'll try to sell my old nook on craigslist, wish me luck!) and I like it much better. I don't have any glare issues (I did get an anti-glare screen protector), but I haven't read outside with it yet. I like that it's backlit because it's much better for reading at night in bed, or even if I'm somewhere and there's not a lamp close by, I can just turn on my nook and read! That was one of the things I wasn't a fan of with the basic nook, the fact that I'd still have to use a light with it. I did like the e-ink, but the backlighting hasn't bothered me yet. I've never downloaded any audiobooks, but I think Outlander would be interesting to try...do they use accents when they read??
It is only one reader, Davina Porter. And she does use accents. I just started it this morning so there has been more descriptive reading than actual dialogue but she does flow between Claire's English accent and the Highlander's Scots easily. It took me about an hour to get used to her voice. I will tell you that even though I have read Outlander twice, hearing it an audio is almost opening another world. It almost lets me visual all the scenes better. I would recommend.
