SOLVED!: Fiction book with a clock and a person walking through a room of statues [s]

Here's what I remember...

It was a book in a series of books, the first one was pretty famous, and it was written in the 20th century.

I remember an image of a clock being wound up that could talk and walk around. The clock and a few other things walked to this giant room where there were all sorts of really life-like statues and they had to save their friends that were turned into statues by finding green balls and doing something with them.
