Good idea. If our first group read proceeds well with a fair amount of participants, shall we proceed to do that from March read onwards?
For voting at polls, you have to scroll over the to the bottom of the Indian Readers homepage and click on Polls bar, which will take you to the book polls site
Some clarifications regarding book polls:
1. Those members who have proposed books to read, please vote for their own.
2. This polls is not for which book you like best, but for which book to choose to read as a group in February (this is for the attention of new comers who were not there for our book groups discussion.
3. The book which gets the maximum votes by Jan 20th will be chosen for Feb reads.

Could it not be better to decide how many pages to read in a week in order to be at the same point all together? Or if it is a long book we could decide to read one chapter (or two) the week. In this way the risk to be spoilt is low. It is only an idea.

You may vote for any book. Whether to read the winning book or not is left to you. It is not compulsory that you read the winning book

we have to discuss with other members and find out their opinion. Sometimes if a book is very interesting, I find it difficult to stop at a certain point.

1) Select 2 books per month. This reduces the number of unselected books by atleast 1, and also ensures that top books that had a close poll still make it to the group reads
2) Automatically add the next 4 books with max votes to the next month's group reads poll provided
a) the earlier nominators are still willing to lead the book read
b) else find someone in the group who is willing to lead that
c) else remove that book from the poll.
1) As of now only 22 have voted, and we don;t know how many will really take part in the challenge. If 2 books are selected, the reading group may dwindle by half and it may be just a handful of readers. We can try that and see how 2 book reads work in Feb ( I really dont want to read Kite Reader again which is leading the polls as of now)
2) Automatically adding the previous books is a good idea

One more thing, am sure everyone is going to finish the book much within the month. Maybe if we are succesful in completing it before the 15th, then from 15th, we can decide on going for the next most voted book as a complementary read for that month. But yeah, we mustn't hurry up the members, and should wait for the slowest reader even, under valid circumstances.
Let us put a trial run of 2 books for Feb. I am upto it. But if too many complaint, or are unable to participate, we can revert back to one book a month

@Meenakshi
That might be a hard task, don't you think? Unless we somehow find some obscure novel, in which case the question of whether everyone would want to read it would come with a big if.

I know but then do we have any other option. We are still considering other ways..if nothing works out then we will think of this one what do you say?Besides do you think everyone will take part in group reads? Of course not EVERYONE will be reading initially, slowly ans steadily participation will increase.
I am not at all sure, what the best plan will be. First let us complete the January read, then decide what to do

Yes this is something we can do..
All new guys,
Please vote for the group read book of Feb, if you are interested. The polls are at the end of the homepage

In January (Jan 15-30) we are reading "Return of the Soldier" proposed by Hazel, who will be the leader of the book read.
We are conducting a poll for February read.
All of us are welcome to nominate books, provided we take up the responsibility of being the lead reader who initiates and maintains discussion for that month. The first 12 books to be nominated (from dates 1-10 of the previous month) will be put up for a poll (dates 11-20) and the winner will be decided depending upon the maximum numbers of votes obtained.
If there is a tie, we can decide later - either read both the books simultaneously or postpone the second book to the next month , or whatever. This matter is open to suggestions.
It is not necessary that everyone should join in, but it would be lots of fun if there are inputs from most of us. No two individuals think alike and I am sure we will be able to debate and churn out issues in the book to our hearts' content.
If anyone wants to drop off in the middle, no problem.
But the lead reader should take the responsibility of completing the book and leading the discussion.
You need not read the whole book to start the discussion or join in; our paces of reading will be different, so one may be just beginning the book while someone else will be in the middle of the book, and some may have already finished.
We can all join in the discussion as and when we want.
But please make sometime to visit the thread at least once a day or so to make the discussion lively.
ADDITIONS:
In view of many new Indian authors joining here and their books being recommended for polls we have added a few guidelines to follow:
1. An author or a close friend may recommend a book
2. The book will be voted for by Indian readers who are steady members at least for the past 6 months or so.
3. All newbies who join in just for the sake of voting for the book will be discouraged.
