Cindy | 6 comments Ok, I have heard about Echo's abrupt ending(s). And I don't know if starting to read it would be overwhelmingly frustrating and just reread the series again or continue to Echo. (I discovered the series October/November when amazon gave a free book download on the Oulander and was hooked ever since!)Thanks for any recommendations.

Elizabeth (lchacha) | 59 comments Welcome Cindy....since there is no release date for her next book yet (though it's rumored to be sometime in 2012)I would go ahead and read Echo. Yes, it does leave you hanging at the end but there is also so much more of the story that you would miss.

Yes, you will be sad when you are done with Echo. Once you finish Echo, you can still go back and re-read the series. I hear it is better the second time around. I just started listening to Outlander after reading the books and am enjoying the audio version of it, but I do not think I would ever give up actually reading a book.

message 3: by Tonya (new)

Tonya | 39 comments Cindy, I am in the same boat! Just finished ABOSAA and thought about waiting, but I'm afraid I will forget things that may be important to Echo. The thing is, she's supposed to be coming out with the second companion book soon from all that I have read and it would make it easy to get back into things before the 8th book comes out. I thought about waiting, like you, but I just don't think I can stand it! Welcome to the group!

message 4: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I would definitely just read it. You can reread, or pick up the audio (I'm doing Outlander audio now too) and it'll tide you over.

message 5: by JC (new)

JC (jmnc) | 27 comments I'm doing my first reread of the series after buying all the books and am almost halfway through ABOSAA. I say read Echo for all the reasons stated above. It's a great book and I can't wait to get to it next, and I know what happens at the end.

message 6: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments I say read it also! Then you can re-read the whole series again. I enjoyed Echo much more the second time around. I am now doing the audio version of the books and will start the audio Echo today. I am looking forward it to it!

message 7: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I'm nervous about getting through the Audio and not having them all. Do you guys just skip the books that we can't get unabriged?

message 8: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments I did skip the Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes. They did recently become available unabridged on recordedbooks.com but, the price is too high for me. I will wait until they come out through audible and get them with my credits. I really enjoy the audible books. Davina Porter does a great job reading them.

message 9: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Hopefully they come out on Audible too. Are they still Davina Porter on recordedbooks?

message 10: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Yes, the unabridged were and the also have the abridged by someone else. However, the price was over $100 for the unabridged.

message 11: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Oh my goodness! Yeah, I'll happily wait for Audible.

message 12: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments I just looked again and the $113 price is for the CD Library Editions. The retail digital edition is $69.75 for each one. They are both about 58 hours long. I will still wait for Audible.

message 13: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments That seems around what they usually cost. I wonder if Amazon has them yet.

message 14: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Only used, unfortunately.

message 15: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 6 comments Thanks so much for the feedback! I will go head and get it on my Kindle. I am so excited!

message 16: by Sue (new)

Sue Erickson | 673 comments I say read Echo. Then you can discuss it and speculate book 8. That's part of the fun. So many opinions about what you think might happen. When your done with Outlander series try the Bronze Horseman Series by Paulinna Simmons. There are 3 books in the series and it's really good. Alexander(the Hero) reminds me of what Jamie would be like in the 20th century. Then you can go back and read the Outlander series again and before you know it-Book 8!

message 17: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 6 comments Ok just looked up the Bronze Horseman. (sorry, I'm the type to research things.) It sounds wonderful! Thanks Sue for the recommendation! I can't wait to read them and I am going to start Echo tonight! And I like the thought of speculating about book 8. :) hehe

LOL....I think everyone who has read the Outlander series starts to panic when they get to the last books because we have gotten so emotionally attached to the characters and the end is now in sight.

To all the first time readers who fit the above, you are not alone and most of the ladies on this board have most likely experienced the same emotional withdrawl.

It also seems that alot of us either looked into The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons or Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati once we were finished with Outlander. I read both series after Outlander and loved them!

message 19: by Sue (new)

Sue Erickson | 673 comments I agree Elizabeth. Forgot about Into the Wilderness. I really enjoyed that series too!

message 20: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I liked Into the Wilderness for the first few books. But unlike Claire and Jamie, Elizabeth and Nathanial don't remain a focal part of the books. That turned me off.

I recommend Clan of the Cave Bear too. It's excellent.

The Clan of the Cave Bear (Earth's Children, #1) by Jean M. Auel

message 21: by Lady's View (new)

Lady's View (fwgal41) | 56 comments I am also waiting to continue reading the books until the next one comes out. I am reading Shadowfever now...Since Dreamfever had a terrible cliffhanger.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue Erickson | 673 comments Wendy I just got Clan of the Cavebear in my stocking for Christmas. Looking forward to it!

message 23: by Gwennie, biblioholic (last edited Jan 04, 2011 12:40PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments The first book is on par with Outlander. The second and third are great, but not as great. The fourth and the fifth again drop a bit (very repetitious). Still it's a series worth the read.

This is the best time to pick it up too, because the last book comes out this march. When I first read it there were only 3 books in the series and it's about a decade between books. It's been 9 years since the Fifth book The Shelters of Stone came out.

message 24: by Rochelle (new)

Rochelle (toastqueen) | 10 comments Just found this post, was coming here to ask the same question!!!
Am wary to read Echo, since the ending is sad and I know a lot of people who were like WTF after reading it! I almost want a "cliffs-notes" version where I don't invest all the time in it to end up disappointed at the end!

message 25: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments It depends on the person. There are alot of us out there who loved Echo.

I say read it. As everyone else had said you can always read the series again til book 8 comes out. Yes, cliffhanger endings there were, but it's a series...so you sort of expect that. Keeps ya wanting more. Plus, there are tidbits online from book 8 to tide you over if you don't mind spoilers. :)

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I am new to the group but have read the Outlander books several times and love them all. I really liked Echo and felt it was more in line with the earlier novels with lots of action and Jamie and Claire together. Go for it if you loved the others.

Have you read the Lord John books yet. Some people found that they enjoyed Echo more after reading them (I had already read them...I had been hesistant to read them, but I really enjoyed getting to know LJG better. No regrets.) Reading them will delay & enhance your reading of Echo. Then read Echo and join us in reliving books 1-7 and imagining what might happen in Book 8! I just saw Diana's twitter that said she is trying to finish Book 8 by the end of 2012...which means no book 8 until 2013 :(

Sorry, this is an old post :), but I checked out the playaway versions from my library. Have you checked to see if your library has them? Or maybe they could get them? LOVE LOVE LOVE Davina Porter's narration of this series! I'm on ABoSaA now.

I didn't really enjoy the 1 or 2 LJG books I read. I just don't really care about the character so much...
But, I didn't realize that Book 8 won't be until 2013!! I thought I only had a year to wait!

message 31: by Leah (new)

Leah (leah_moss) | 91 comments I know! It's painful :) This is the longest I've had to wait on a new book! I discovered & finished the series just 4 months before Echo came out. I thought that 4 months was torture! Oh well, genius takes time, I suppose. AND they are worth it...

message 32: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kikitaranto) | 101 comments I would WAIT!!! I agree Leah it is torture!

message 33: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Hhahaha! I've been reading this series since Drums of Autumn was first released. I'm used to the long wait....

In terms of long weight, this is nothing compared to the Clan of the Cave Bear series. We waited 9 years between books.

Waiting makes the chance to actually read it that much better ! ;) Kind of how absence makes the heart grow fonder...

message 35: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I agree, it's hard when we're actually waiting but it does make getting the book even better.

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) | 169 comments Waaaaaiiiit! Cause I didn't, and I regret it. Loved it but was distraught with how it ends :(

message 37: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Starting the Outlander series is a "commitment." I don't think anyone who has read it, would disagree with me. That being said, if you're going to put the time and effort in this series, it's best if you read them all...at least in my opinion. I think the hardest book to get through for me was "Dragonfly in Amber," (book 2.) I know that some people found book 7, "Echo In The Bone," just as difficult, although I am not sure why. Can these books stand alone? I think they could in the beginning, but why would you want to pick up any 'series' of books and begin with say, book 5? It just wouldn't make sense, especially lacking great character development!

Gabaldon certainly takes her time cranking these books out, which is why I was so appreciative to have started the series last March and finished with all 7 by July! Also, as you know, her books are RICH in history, (most of it true), and in order to continue with the quality of writing she gives her readers, "time" is what it continues to take...as much as that stinks for the rest of us!! :)

Yeah, count yourself lucky that you just started the series last March! I started it back in 1995. I was lucky enough to get DIA and Voyager right away, but I had to wait for each subsequent book to come out. Oh, the agony of the wait for book 4! By now I'm just used to it. ;)

The anticipation makes the enjoyment that much better. I do "cheat" and read the excerpts online so it helps with the waiting...
