message 201: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Any genre is fine with me Wendy!

Sandra (I don't read, I devour.) (sisgood) | 33 comments Any suggestions on a good book to read for the Father's Day theme? Cause I am wracking my brain and can't think of one where a father is more than just a supporting character. The best I'm coming up with right now is Dave, Lend's dad from Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy, #1) by Kiersten White

On the other hand, I can think of three good ones for gay pride LOL not really considered YA (and I really don't understand why) but... Magic's Price (Valdemar Last Herald-Mage, #3) by Mercedes Lackey

message 203: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Hmmmm, I can't think of many either! A couple that do come to mind: Strange Angels (Strange Angels, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow King of Shadows by Susan Cooper City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare and perhaps Fire (The Seven Kingdoms Trilogy, #2) by Kristin Cashore ? Some of those are to do with the effect of the father's death on the MC though; does that count?

message 204: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments If you haven't read North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley yet, the father's role of that one is basically pivotal to the story. And I just love love love the book, so read it anyway.

Some others I can think of: Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (several father figures that play large roles in the story), The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa , Demonglass (Hex Hall, #2) by Rachel Hawkins , Fire by Kristin Cashore , The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (the adopted father relationship is fabulous), The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1) by Rick Riordan , or A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett .

message 205: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Catie wrote: "I really liked the dad in Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King"

Agreed.

message 206: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Becca great choices! North of Beautiful and Book Thief are two I would not have even thought of, but they are excellent!

message 207: by Gwennie (last edited May 24, 2011 12:18PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I read it last month for mental illness awareness, but I would say that Crazy by Han Nolan works for Father's too.

(Love love love this book.)

Yay! Good idea.

message 209: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I'm reading Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt right now, and I think it would work well for the Father's theme.

message 210: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexlibris) I think One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones is a really good book for a fathers day theme and the Gay Pride theme.

message 211: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Nice book name Rebecca!

message 212: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I have hit the trifecta! I am reading a book that hits on all three themes (father's, gay pride, and light summer read) it is My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger . I only have 30 pages left so I will finish it up tonight and be done with the challenge already. Yay for me!

Well you could grandfather yourself into this challenge because you just read the same book last month (right?)

message 215: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Nice Heidi, I will have to use that one too!

message 216: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Jaimie wrote: "Nice Heidi, I will have to use that one too!"

I think you will like it. It is very sweet, but sometimes we all need a little sweet in our lives.

message 217: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Catie wrote: "Haha! Retrofitted and grandfathered in...nice."

Done and done!

message 218: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Hmmm, I just finished Marcelo In The Real World by Francisco X. Stork and I can that in for Father's Day (does it have to be a great dad? Or any kind of dad?). And for my light reading I was going to say the latest Psy/Changeling book but it's not YA and it's not that light. So I have two more to work on. It's still early, I've got time... sorta.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments I will probably read a lot of books that qualify for these themes. I am reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, #1) by Ann Brashares series and I also plan to read Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green soon. The first has summer theme and father characters. The later I hear has gay pride themes. I don't know much about it though and don't want to lol.

Any dad is fine - good or bad (or even noticeably absent). Any book for your summer read is fine too as long as it is light so your psy/changeling book will work :)

Yay! I got you to come on over. Love Will Grayson (and yes def. gay themes in it).

Yay! Lots of YAY! I also want to read David Levithan's Boy Meets Boy. Have you read it?
Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

message 223: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Nope. Sounds good though.

message 224: by Heidi (last edited Jun 26, 2011 11:04AM) (new)

Heidi Ok so I am feeling lazy. I am making July's themes pretty lame. Sorry in advance.

July Themes:

1. There are three major holidays in July. Fourth of July (US), Bastille Day (France), and Canada Day (Canada). Since the flags are similar in color (sorry Canada I know you don't have any blue...but I said I was lazy!), read a book with a red, white, OR blue cover.

2. There are several travel related dates in July (Henry Ford - US car maker birthdate, Amelia Earhart birthday, Neil Armstrong birthdate, start of the steam engine, Louis Bleriot (crossed English Channel) birthdate, etc..) and also a lot of people seem to take trips in July soooooooooooo I was thinking a book where the protagonist or any of the main characters are on a journey or a trip of some type.

Hope these are ok :)

message 225: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Sweet! This fits with my theme reads for another group. I can cross them. That helps!

I'm doing Deadline (Newsflesh, #2) by Mira Grant , which actually fits both themes today. Blue and Red cover, and the main character 'hits the road to find what truth can be found at the end of a shotgun'. Is that cheating?

message 226: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Cool, I like the idea of monthly theme reads.
I was just about to start reading Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins , so I guess that would count for the blue cover.

I'll have to come up with something for traveling later. I'm sure one of the many books on my to-read list will cover it.

If anything I always say reading one theme book is fine too. Mostly I just like seeing what everyone picks and hearing about their books :)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments I never got around to reading Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan this month. I also want to reread Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater Both have blue covers. I need a travel book. There is an official thread we are supposed to post in right?

message 230: by Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (last edited Jun 27, 2011 02:16PM) (new)

message 232: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Jun 27, 2011 03:12PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm going to do what Wendy is doing and try to re-use challenges from other groups. Will have to think about what I want to do.

(lmao Heidi I so look like I copied you now with the other challenge I made, but I swear I didn't!)

message 233: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I didn't even think that Stacia! Great minds!

message 234: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Great ideas Awesomevegan! I will add Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments Heidi (don't listen to me) wrote: "Great ideas Awesomevegan! I will add Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson"

Thanks. :) I haven't read that one yet but it would be perfect.

message 236: by Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (last edited Jun 28, 2011 06:26AM) (new)

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 325 comments I am currently reading one that would have worked for next month for traveling... but I was to dumb to wait and I want to bring it to the library with my other... um 7 things that need to go back. I have plenty of time. It is just that I don't like to hold onto them too long in case someone else may want to read them.
Crash Into Me by Albert Borris

As a bonus, I will probably listen to some Doctor Who audiobooks next month. I wont count them as my actual read though because they are only 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours long. :)

message 237: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexlibris) Heidi (don't listen to me) wrote: "Great ideas Awesomevegan! I will add Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson"

that is a good one too.

message 238: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I was thinking about doing Where the Mountain Meets the Moon for my traveling book, but it may be more middle grade than YA.
Any thoughts?

If so, I can pick another. Awesomevegan had lots of good suggestions.

I don't think they would care if you read a MG book. Still best to check. :) I am glad I could help. I still haven't chosen mine yet. BTW would
Paper Towns work for travel?

message 240: by Nikki (aka Quinn) (new)

Nikki (aka Quinn) | 69 comments Paper Towns...for sure!

message 241: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Finished Deadline for my July reads. It was great!

message 242: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I read 13 Little Blue Envelopes (Little Blue Envelope, #1) by Maureen Johnson which covers both July themes (road trip - blue cover) :)

message 243: by Heidi (new)

Heidi So...when right after I started this thread I agreed to fill in as a moderator in another group which has taken up more of my energy (I am quite a slacker so that means little) than I expected. If anyone would like to help fill in and come up with any themes for the upcoming months that would be great (no obligation to do it every month if you don't want to). If no one is interested that is cool too. We can always re-start this thread at a later date. Thanks :)
