Cat (beyondelsewhere) I thought it was kind of weird. I didn't like Jace all that much and I felt the relationship sort of came out of nowhere.

message 2: by Cat (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cat (beyondelsewhere) I read this book way back in April. :) I really enjoyed it, too. I am trying very hard to not buy the second book in Hard Cover, so if it is discussed before next Summer I'll have to stay away!

Ms. Hicks | 25 comments I agree the relationship seemed to come out of no where. It seemed like Jace was amused by Clary in an arrogant kind of way - but I didn't feel like Clary was into Jace at all and then for no apparent reason she was.

message 4: by Cat (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cat (beyondelsewhere) I am relieved that you agree! I thought perhaps I was the only one who felt the relationship came from left field!

Jace just bugged me. I much preferred Simon. Just thought he needed to be around more.

Elizabeth | 25 comments I saw the relationship coming, but I don;t know if that was because I was already familiar with Clare's writing, or if it's just that he is the type I would prefer! I was surprised she went there, with the twist at the end, though. Well, hmm, I mean, it's Star Wars standard, so not shocking, but I guess I'm surprised at the physical level it went to.

message 6: by HeyT (new)

HeyT I agree I was surprised at how far their 'relationship' went but I wasn't surprised by the OMG SIBLINGS!!11! factor. As soon as they said Jocelyn was Valentine's wife I figured Clary was his daughter and the 'He's not dead yet' bit with Hodge that they were sibs.

The more I think about this the more I'm becoming afraid of this being Wincest all over again. >_<

PandaRanda I did like Clary and Jace's relationship, and I didn't think it was out of nowhere. Throughout the book there were subtle hints pointing towards them falling for each other. It was like they liked each other but they wouldn't admit to it/didn't realize it, a bit like little kids, even teenagers and adults can be like that too.

I liked how their relationship was hidden beneath the surface, building up slowly, rather than being straight out explicit and constantly going on about their feelings for each other. Besides their personalities suited each other so well, and if Jace didn't like Clary he obviously wouldn't've followed her around all the time/helped her out so much, plus he liked to tease her and make out that he was the best, like the typical male way of showing off and implying their partiality for someone. Clary liked him too, but she wasn't going to admit to it and let him, a notorious player, have that power over her. She was obviously drawn to him too...it wasn't just a coincidence that they the two of them were constantly keeping each other's company.

I kinda liked Simon, but I didn't like him together with Clary...I dunno his personality often grated on me, and he seemed like such a wimp most of the time, until the end. Plus he did petty things to try and get Clary to notice him, like pretending he was head-over-heels in love with Isabelle, getting turned into a rat and so on. He was so...girly sometimes, and that totally put me off, and he seemed more "best friend" material than "boyfriend" material to me, but that's just what I think.

I really didn't like the twist at the end with Jace being Jonathon and all...it kinda upset me, and grossed me out a little..especially because they hooked up a bit...I thought that was totally an unnecessary twist to the plot, really. Incest...*shivers*. And also how they seemed almost uncaring of the whole matter after they found out. Perhaps they were in denial, I don't know, but still, it was silly.

The love triangle was ugh, and the plot twists were kinda lame. Overall, I think Luke was my fave character, yay for werewolves! XD

message 8: by HeyT (new)

HeyT I'm not saying that I am a hard core proponent for Simon and Clary to be together but I also think we don't see enough of Simon to truly gage his character fully.

J-Lynn Van Pelt | 43 comments ***Spoilers***
I agree with PandaRanda that the relationship with Jace and Clary wasn't out of nowhere. I think it was well developed--they were single teenagers in a deadly and adventurous situation--drawn to each other because they were from different worlds. It made sense.

And, like Elizabeth, I figured out the sibling connection well before the ending and was a little frustrated that the characters were so dense. If everything else about Clary's life turned out to be a lie, why did they assume her mother told the truth about her father? Not to mention Jace's prophecy of falling in love with the wrong person (why would Clary be wrong for him? Blood relation, ew!). And, the timeline from Valentine's fall fit, Hodge says it several times.

But, unlike many of you, I think the brother/sister twist is a really interesting element. A bit gross, but it makes the fantasy story different from the standard tale of love and adventure. I think the dynamics between all of the characters--Alec/Jace, Jace/Clary, Clary/Simon, Isabelle/everyone--makes the story compelling. I can't wait to see how their stories will unfold in the following books. And how introducing the other Lightwood brother will effect the mix.

Kelly RAley (kraley) | 101 comments I can't wait for you guys to all read City of Ashes because so much of this thread is addressed there. I first read this book last year and pre-ordered the sequel. I really liked the Jace/Clary relationship and can't wait for her to become more powerful/less dependent on others as Bella in our favorite vampire books has recently done. I really liked this book and recommend the sequel.

Ashley (readerandwriter) I think that now Jace and Clary know they are brother and sister, their bond will get a lot tighter with time.

message 12: by Kris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kris (krisdale) I don't believe that they are brother and sister, I just don't think that Clare wouldn't do incest, and for some reason I want her to work it out and for them to be able to be together that won't gross any of the characters or the readers out.

Suzanne | 7 comments I was really thrown by the sibling twist at the end! I don't want to believe it. I keep thinking it must be a lie and they'll find out in the next book and be together. But I won't bank on it just in case.

Tera (TheBookishAbyss) I wasn't surprised by the relationship and everything seemed fitting, if not predictable. The story was great and I, too, was frustrated with Jace and Clary not "getting it" right away and even moreso with Clary for not realizing the depth of Simon's feelings. I was never completely comfortable with Clare and Jace's relationship because I have a bit of a soft spot for Simon and knew how much it was hurting him. That was conveniently resolved.

Marie (librarydaisygmailcom) Gwen, I completely agree, there is no way this series will end with them being siblings.

Starmyst | 1 comments I picked this one up a little over a month ago, from my daughters friend, and Loved it. I disliked Jace, cheered on Simon, yet at the same time felt bad for clary at the end. Of'course I have already read the next instalment (City of Ashes) and have more insight on the situation. I am really looking forward to City of Glass!

message 17: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ i highly doubt that they're really siblings, or the whole series would just turn out... weird. and clary better not end up w/simon cuz simon annoys me and jace is so much cooler!!! :P

This whole sibling thing is weird to me. Star Wars for sure. But then if they don't turn out to be siblings their emotions are really going to be messed with and they will need therapy (just kidding). I was a little grossed out... but it was something new I hadn't ever read before so it was also interesting. And what about Alec loving Jace? There is another love twist!

message 19: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ totally. :P it's like a... love square... XD

message 20: by lionlady (new)

lionlady | 32 comments Okay, I admit, I enjoyed the book and will probably read the sequals. However, it was rather predictable because it seemed like a cross between Harry Potter and Star Wars. I would have liked to see the relationship between Alec and Jace develop. Perhaps it does in the sequal(s)?

That is what I hear... I am waiting for the sequel from the library now. That relationship made me want to check out the next book.

message 22: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ i loved the second one just as much as the first one... :D

message 23: by Jeni (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jeni (jenibouu) | 5 comments I found the book great! I loved it! Until the end... I'm sorry, but I was thoroughly disgusted by the end of it. I knew they were getting involved ever since the beginning where Jace started telling her about the demon he was killing despite Alec and Isabelle telling him not to. If you wonder how I knew it from that point, please understand that my forte is romance novels. That's mostly what I read.
Anyways, I thought Clary's character was a little dull, lacking umph and pizzaz. Personally, being in love with Jace the way I am :P, I pictured him with a more strong, alluring, exciting girl...kinda like me:D. Clary's character started to grow, and change into a more defined person as the story progressed, and by the time Jace kissed her, I had started to like her a little, but not that much. I figured, heey if Jace likes her, thats good enough for me.
BUUT, Since I am also a soap opera watcher, I spotted the twist from almost immedietly. For example, when Clary saw the photo of the circle and Jace's dad and said he doesn't look like his father and Hodge said he looks more like his mother...After that I was like "hmmm. Clary grew up without a father, and Jace grew up without a mother...peculiar..." Then, when Dorothea said he'd fall in love with the wrong person...Since I already knew he was falling for Clary, I wondered, why Clary would be the wrong person. First, I thought maybe she had feelings for Simon, but it became evident that she only had eyes for Jace. It hit me. They were related. I read the rest of the novel in fear that it would turn out they were related...It was terrifying.
I need to read the next novels, for Jace and no one else. Let me just say, if he wasn't such a compelling character, I would have just said "Sayonora" to the plot. After watching years of the soap opera Passions, I draw the line at incest. But I guess I can tough it out till the end...Who knows, the storyline might take a delicious turn...In other words, Jace might find a girl for him better than Clary, and poor simon might stand a chance!

I'm a huge Jace fan and I came to like Clarey more as I read the rest of the series.
I hated the way The City of Bones ended too, but the series as a whole is fabulous!!! Keep reading!!!!!

Katherine Quarles | 5 comments I loved the relationship between Jace and Clary! Of course, the whole sibling thing did make it weird for me in City of Ashes; however, City of Glass makes up for it! The rest of the series gets A LOT better!

message 27: by Celestasaurus (last edited Aug 30, 2009 04:44PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Celestasaurus WARNING: DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED THE SERIES. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
In the first book, when we found out that they were siblings, I thought that was a great twist. Really shocked readers. But when the relationship between Jace and Clary was still there in the second book, I knew that they couldn't possibly be related. I didn't think Cassandra Clare would keep it going if they really were related. I mean, all she would succeed in doing was disgusting readers. And by the third book, it was too obvious that they weren't.

lol yeah, ik what you mean. it was a little obvious, but oh well. there was still a part of me wondering, the whole time. lol. and at least cassie clare really thought it out so that it made sense.

Part of me was wondering the whole time too.

Amena Khan (amenakhan) | 12 comments oh poo...I am still trying to finish that series and I read your comment Kate...well at least I know they'll end up together, that makes me feel better! I was super dissapointed when they ended u being siblings in the first one!!! I was like NOOOO! I think that's why I didn't want to read them. Kay now I must get the out of my garage and READ!!

message 35: by Lani (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lani (crahfty) I thought the sibling thing was an nice, unexpected twist. I held firm to the belief though that Cassandra Clare would not set up a romance that could never be. I held out hope that they would discover that it was all a misunderstanding.

I was a little disapointed that the revelation didn't happen until the third book though. I wanted to see more of the two of them together.

message 36: by Kate (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kate (katemreads) | 5 comments Oh, sorry Amena. I didn't mean to spoil it for you. I personally didn't mind the whole sibling thing, it was a twist that no one expects in a book. It's kind of sad that there are so many people who didn't want to read the rest just because of that, though I do understand their reasoning. I think it's going to be the new taboo for books, well if other authors continue it.

message 37: by Tina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tina (tinawoytasczyk) | 8 comments There is another book scheduled to come out in March of 2011 called "City of Fallen Angels" and it follows Simon, but I hope we get to see more of Clary and Jace too!! Also there is another Trilogy coming out that is kind of a prequel to the "City" books called the "Clockwork" books. I believe they are dated in the Victorian Era. The scheduled posted on www.mortalinstuments.com is:

September 7, 2010: The Clockwork Angel
March 11, 2011: City of Fallen Angels
September 2011: The Clockwork Princess
September 2012: The Clockwork Prince

Jacque (JackJack) | 6 comments They are really good together. I hated it when they thought they were brother and sister. But at the end when they found out the truth, it was nice. Cant wait for City of Fallen Angels!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)
