Nath, I had to read Lord of the Flies when I was in high school - which was many years ago. What did you think of it? I hated it, but I wonder how much of that was because I was required to read it . . .

I remember really liking this when I read it as a pre-teen and hating it when I had to read it again in High School... but then, I had a really bad Lit teacher who could suck the joy out of anything. I may have to revisit it... someday, lol!

message 59: by Nathalie (new)

Nathalie (natjen29) To both Kay and Stacie.. I wasn't too thrilled by the novel. It didn't leave any impression.
Have read worse and have read better, but maybe it would have been better read at a younger age.
And I would be mortified having to read this for school, known for sucking the life force out of novels worldwide.

What did you think of this one? I'm wary of reading it since it was published posthumously and in those cases you never really know what the author's intent was.

I found it to be very good. Not unlike other Crichton novels, which can be quite scientific and much on the detail, this novel paints a fairly good picture in your head of how it was in those days. Of course with the aid of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise visualising it, is that much easier.
But all in all, it's a tale filled with action, not a classic in the making but definitely a good day or two of enjoyed reading.

I love that novel. I still have a review to write, but it's been the third time I read it, and in my opinion it's among the best S. King has written.

Angie H what did you think of Rabbit Run??
I am in a book club with my sister in law, mother in law and a few others and we are reading through the classics...one of our first books was Rabbit Run and we all hated it... so we named our book club " at least its better than Rabbit Run"..ha ha because we figured they just couldn't get any worse....we were wrong though. =)

I didn't love the novel, but I didn't find it bad either. It felt like a novel from the 60's, with values I would never stand for.
Nonetheless it is written well, because it moved me in a way. Books that do nothing to me, are the bad kind. This one enraged and made me feel helpless at times, which doesn't make it a bad book. It just makes it a topic I don't agree with.
But I've read reviews of this novel, and they all say do love it or hate it, but it will definitely invoke a reaction, and that it true.

Nath, I just read Breaking Dawn too! I'm hoping to see the movie with a bunch of the girls from work :)

message 80: by Nathalie (new)

Nathalie (natjen29) @ Kay: I'm sure it won't be my only Jane Austen novel either. :)

@ Andrea: It aired here too, but I'll have to wait for the dvd release I'm afraid. :(

I went last week with a bunch of girls from my book group to see it. It was better than the last couple, IMO. It was a great watch with others who'd read & enjoyed the book.

Good to know, because I wasn't swept away by Eclipse. Breaking Dawn is the best twilight novel IMO, so not going to miss this. :)
